i really do think the lestat and gabriella relationship is so well done when it comes to the incestual abuse. lestat is obviously struggling with it, dreaming about their relationship and waking up unsettled. he hides that gabriella is his mother because he knows the questions and comments he will get, he lies to everyone to make sure no one finds out the truth. he becomes defensive when trying to explain it. he's ashamed and confused and agitated. when he sets boundaries, she crosses them; when he rebuffs her, she abandons him. he spirals in her absence, growing increasingly desperate for the love he craves so badly, the love she used to get him into bed the first time, and he will take it any way he can get it, because that's the only value he's been taught to see in himself for other people, partly by her.

#agreed #i understand the criticisms re: character adaptation (i haven't read tvl yet but i share some of those criticisms)#but i think the way they've handled this aspect of their story has been really nuanced and realistic and it's exhausting that the fandom #would rather spend their time arguing on whether it's actually consensual or not or whether the show understands that lestat is a victim #they do! they're just not interested in holding ur hand and having sam reid look at the camera to go LESTAT IS A VICTIM OF INCESTUOUS ABUSE #and then the discussion gets exhausting because it becomes so incredibly victim blamey when you could actually be discussing how this #v formative relationship in lestat's life has informed how he views himself and why he's so hypersexualized (esp when u include the magnus #of it all)#(sorry to put iwtv/tvl discourse in ur dash but the fandom is exhausting as per usual and i'm glad i've muted/blocked most ppl)#(also sorry if you've already read all this if u follow my twitter but i wanted this on my tumblr too)
