Wow, this is a really hard post to write - Tobey passed away on November 1, 2019 as a result of his degenerative myeolopathy.  The wonderful photos above were taken in April of this year when he was still able to walk and even run when he got going.  

I will miss you my sweet handsome boy.

Raisins are Toxic!!! I somehow have always know this and yet my Wild Warrior managed to snatch a small bowl of Raisin Bran and gobble it down before I could stop him. My first thought was “how the heck did he get into it” and my second thought was “holy crap raisins are poisonous”.

Long story short, I got him to the emergency vet within 40 mins where the proceeded to make him vomit and then fed him charcoal. After observing him for about 36 hours and monitoring his kidney function he was allowed to come home.

At 4 years old he has had 3 health incidents in the last month. I want to bundle him up in bubble wrap! I’m not superstitious but maybe bad things really do happen in threes. Let’s hope that’s true and our drama filled weekends have come to a end.

He’s currently napping but he is also very much regretting his recent life choices!

My loving note to Barnaby is this “I’m so glad you are okay, but can you please try and stay out of mischief for awhile?”

Happy 13th Barkday to this handsome boy. Over the last year he has progressively lost the use of his hind limbs, but that won't keep a good corg down. He got a special session with his snuffle mat as an extra treat.

Corgi Lip Piercing

Barnaby and I have had an exciting 24 hours.  I was up in the mountains staying with a friend at her cabin and she was kind enough to let Barn come along.  She and I stepped out for about an hour and closed all the doors to the bedrooms, put away anything he could get into and then crossed our fingers he didn’t get into too much mischief.  I patted him on the head told him to be good and we then left for a short period.  As we were out I got 3 phone calls in quick succession and since they were from a number I didn’t recognize I ignored them.  When I did look at my phone there were 3 missed calls and 2 voicemails and when I read the transcription it read “I have your dog Barnaby”.  I immediately started panicking and called the woman back.  She had seen him running up and down the street and finally got him to come to her.  Luckily I have his name and my phone number embroidered on his collar so she was able to contact me.  I thanked her profusely and when we got him in the car, we were looking him over and saw that his lip was scraped up and his canine tooth had broken off and pierced his lip.

My mind was reeling as to how this could have happened.  When we got back to the house we realized that he had jumped onto the kitchen table, jumped over to the open window sill to look at and then fell out, 10 feet down to the concrete.  We surmised that he hit pretty much face first and broke off his tooth which then got stuck in his lip.

Since we weren’t anywhere near home we took him to a local vet who gave him a thorough once over, removed the tooth, gave him some antibiotics, some pain meds and sent us home with orders to see our regular vet and have the rest of the tooth pulled.

When we got back to the cabin watched him like a hawk convinced that there was no way we got away so lucky as to only have a broken tooth.  I mean he’s a corgi which short little stumpy legs - he could have broken his legs, his neck, his back, gotten hit by a car.  I had a serious case of the ‘what ifs’.  I’m grateful that he seems to have escaped serious injury.

Good morning everyone! I wanted to provide another health update after my vet appointment on Tuesday. I had a full battery of tests including specialized bloodwork, MRIs, x-rays, and a spinal tap.  They were able to rule out any tumors, inflammatory disease, severe spinal cord compression, protruding discs, or disc herniation. Given my symptoms and their progression, the most likely diagnosis is degenerative myelopathy (DM). While it’s not possible to definitively test for DM, with everything else ruled out, it’s the consensus of the neurologist, radiologist, and orthopedist that this is the cause of my caboose challenges. The Uprights and I are now putting a plan together.  While there is no cure for DM, we’re focusing on supportive options to keep me mobile and comfortable for as long as possible. I do have some muscle loss from all the crate rest and steroids so I’ll start with some hydrotherapy to help build things back up as a first step. Just for today, I am comfortable, smiling, and able to get around all by myself. Today is what is most important. As always the love, prayers, and support each of you provide is profoundly appreciated. Thank you!

The top picture is from the Pixel Wall (6′ x 6′) at my office and back in October we had a fundraiser where I had the winning bid and got to pick the picture I wanted to be displayed.  I parlayed my $250 donation to the Ronald McDonald House into this epic picture of my two boys.  It is directly across from my desk so I get to gaze at it all day...let’s be honest I’m never at my desk but if I was I could totally gaze at it all day.  In any case, I just needed to share this with Corgi Nation.  It’s a pretty damn good representation if you ask me.

Otis turned 7 on Sunday. We almost missed his Barkday this year. We got him in January and it gets confusing trying to remember he was actually born in November. 

He still acts like a puppy in a lot of ways. Better behaved, but his energy and antics haven’t changed since he was a tiny spud. He’s the best pup ever. 

I thought he was coming to hang out with me, but he left after I ran out of french fries. I’ve accepted that he loves food more than me. As long as he still loves me.

Thirteen years ago tomorrow I picked up Tobey from his birth home...it changed my life forever. Happy Gotchu Day to my sweet boy.
