Got caught up in the holiday madness, huh?
Considering Iâm just now getting back to you, Iâd say they had me working doubles through Christmas.
Seems I canât even get a break during the holidays but money is well money.Â
Ouch. I feel your pain - my overtime hours only got crazier. Sin City's living up to its reputation.
I hope your new year's off to a good start, though.Â

Is there someone you strive to be more like? A real like mentor or role model?
My father. Frank was... he was an incredibly kind person. He believed in people, tried to understand them. And he took care of everyone that mattered to him. Always, as best he could. So, yeah - I think my dad's the best mentor, the best role model, I could have.
Christmas is just the prelude to New Years anyways. You know, the time of the year where we get to see people make promises to themselves that they wonât keep.
'Tis the season, for all that. And a wild spike in violent crime. Apparently.Â
Should've expected it, I guess - this is Vegas, after all.Â
And I thought Christmas was busy, around here...
Is work killing anyone else?
God, yes. I've never had a holiday rush like this one.
Are you going to get stuck working through Christmas, or are they giving you a break for that, at least?

Mountain Sound || Ben & Toby
As the sun began to set in the distance and cast itâs long shadows across the ground, Ben had decided that he craved the wide open areas rather than the cramped spaces of the city. His heart yearned for beautiful sights and quiet, something that made him desire to be back at home where the view was so peacefulâ but his place was here, aiding his adopted family and doing what was needed of him. That didnât stop him from getting nights to himself, and this would be one of them.
The vampire was prepped for a small hike, gazing out the window as his cab ride took him out towards the mountains that he had been told about the day prior. Such a lonely setting it seemed, regardless of what he was told, but it was perfect for a refreshing personal moment, and as the car came to a stop, Ben was eager to pay the tab and begin his descent into the lightly collected snow.
His heightened eyesight allowed him to pick out every detail in the darkness, already enjoying the beauty of the wilderness around him. Perhaps one day he could gather the appropriate gear to make it to the top, a sort of goal he was making now granted he had the time to accomplish it.
Directing his path to one of the many trails, Ben took a deep breath, watching his exhale burst into steam as he released it. He would have to come out here more often, maybe get lucky enough for a heavily clouded day to allow him out during the evening.
The trail was taking an incline, heading along the side of the mountain, and Ben continued to follow, eventually straying from the path so that he could better explore whatever drew his attention. There was movement that had him ducking down a bit to get a better look, eyes catching sight of a female deer and an infant at her side, the sight strangely reminding Ben of his mother, and the nights they spent running, sometimes forced to sleep in the woods or an old barn. The thought caused him to frown a bit, hand resting against the thick trunk of a tree beside him as he watched the animal nibble on a small bush. The breeze changed, Benâs scent being carried towards them and in that instant, the mother lifted her head, eyes meeting Benâs as if she could see him standing there. Her ears swiveled forward, tail flashing white as it was lifted, and for a moment Ben thought she would go back to eating, but the safety of her young drove her to run, twigs snapping under her weight as she took off.
Disappointed, Ben straightened up, moving along the hill he was climbing and enjoying the silence until it was suddenly broken, the sound of barking making his skin crawl as undesirable memories came rushing to him.
Ferns and blackberry brambles curled onto the canvas as Toby laid out the painting, lightly marking out moss, fallen redwoods, roots. Itâd been hovering around in his head since that morning, this scene - the forest along the Chetco River, in spring, the way heâd first seen it.Â
He had woken up early, thinking to unpack a few more boxes before heading in to the labs. The second one he opened was full of Frankâs shots, and the frames on top had left that first hunting trip on his mind: kalmiopsis bushes bursting out of burnt pines, a belted kingfisher on a mossy branch. Sadie and Milo at the riverâs edge, the setter refusing to go deeper than his ankles while the coonhound splashed away.Â
Heâd sketched through his lunch break, and set up a canvas as soon as he got home. There were more than a few stacked next to his drafting table, all prepped over the last few months, built and canvassed and ghessoed - only because Frank had kept encouraging him. Go on, donât need you hovering. Go on. Heâd laughed, kindly. Told Toby to do something other than worry for a while, with that worn, exhausted smile on his face. Wearing thinner with every day, as the cancer carved into him. Toby had tried, because Frank had told him to, he had. But heâd never got more than a few sweeps of paint down. The diagnosis had left a cold, heavy ache in his stomach, and itâd come creeping up as he started working. Clawing into his throat, choking him. Sometimes heâd make an excuse, going to do something for the dogs, or cut kindling, or clean. Most often, though, Toby had just shaken off his skin and padded over to sit by his father. Trying to ignore the harsh, clinging scent of sickness. Frank had just scratched behind the wolfâs ears, smiling, and gone on joking, talking. Dying.Â
Toby sat back, reaching for the glass of gin heâd poured himself. He took a slow sip, breathing in the brightness of citrus and juniper, eyeing the canvas. The pencil work wasnât anything exacting. Wasnât supposed to be. At work, his drawings were crisply realistic; on his own time, he drifted towards looser styles. Heâd toy with this sketch a little more. The actual painting part heâd leave for his next day off, when he had natural light to work in - Toby had set up his drafting desk under the wide living room window, the perfect spot. Sadie started to spring away from his pencil when he went back to sketching. Only started. Toby twitched at a sudden burst of howls and barks from outside, the dogs, bawling like they had something treed. Darting around a few packing boxes, he snatched a jacket off the back of one of the kitchen chairs, yanked on his boots, took a flashlight from the counter and headed down the steps. Pawprints crisscrossed the thin, powdery snow, but the dogs themselves were all busy down at the fence, jumping up, barking madly. âWhatâre you guys after, huh?â Toby wove through to get to the latch, gently brushing them back, quieting the pack with a loud titch.
There it was - the scent that set them off. Some kind of cologne. Smelled expensive. And something else, faint, but... metallic. Old. Rusty? Not quite. Just a sliver of it, anyway. Toby swung the gate open, shining the flashlight through the treeline. He lowered the beam, politely, as he caught movement between the pinyon pines: just somebody out for a stroll. They didnât seem to have a light of their own. Mustâve been relying on the stars and that sliver of moon. That was a little crazy, especially with snow on the ground. So an inexperienced or slightly reckless hiker, who'd probably just had the shit scared out of them. âSorry about the noise,â Toby started, the apology genuine. âThey just got excited.â Caro nosed at his fingers, then, letting out a low whimper. He gave her downy head a reassuring scratch. A slight smile lingered on his face as he looked back up, into the forest. âYou alright, out there?âÂ
Tuttle Auto, man, yeah. Nameâs Donal, good to know you.
âŠdonât joke about free food, good sir.
Also, if youâre looking for the best place for hunting gear thereâs a place just down the road from my shop that is A-1 mint. Owner makes a custom stock like nobodyâs tomorrow.
Gotcha. Tobias. Nice to meet you, too.
No joke. My dad and I used to keep the department in game. Not sure how we'll do for tags this year, but I can let you know. And there's always turkey and jackrabbit. They're free for the taking around here, I'm told.Â
Thanks for the tip. That kind of thing's a real art. I'll take a look, next time I'm in town.
Oh yeah, baby, thatâs me on those billboards. Or you know because of that fucking Orange County show. No relation, thankfully.
Tracking and survival are more my pace but mmm, elk. And if there just happens to be duck lying around about to go to waste I wouldnât refuse it.
Ah...
I think I just remember it from... a garage? Yeah, like a mechanic's place. Is that you?
Between me and the dogs, nothing's ever around long enough to go off - but I could put something aside for you and your cats, next time, if you like.Â
calico hills
red rock national conservation area, las vegas, nevada
I work nights and every once in awhile I sing, nothing too special but I like it.
Iâve never been on the West Coast but I heard itâs beautiful specially California.Â
Nice. Singing's pretty special. Do you have a band?Â
Albany's pretty far from the coast, but I've been out that way, and down to California a few times. For hunting trips. We made it to the beaches every once in a while. It really is amazing, all of it - but I'm biased. Vegas has some great spots, though. I just checked out Red Rock Canyon yesterday. The Calico Hills are neat, if you're looking for beautiful places.
Vermontâyou know that freezing state right next to Maine and the frozen lands of Canada?
So I guess you could say I know a thing or two about snow.Â
Oh. Yeah, that's... that's a hell of a move. I'm out of Oregon. Albany, Oregon. And around there.
What d'you get up to, now that you're loose in the big city?Â
Any Tuttles back home?
Huntinâ mutts! Whatâs the usual quarry?
'fraid not. It sounds a little familiar, though. Do you have signs up in the city, somewhere?
Just about anything in season.Â
Deer, elk, mountain goat, pronghorns. We'll go for birds and small game, sometimes. Are you a hunter, then?
