Porch 2015 Mission Trip
I have been going on summer mission trips since I was a freshman in high school. When the average person thinks of a mission trip, they think of raising lots of money to travel overseas to a third-world country where they will hammer some nails and play with some kids. I have been on many of those trips and I have no complaints about them. They have been very impactful on my life. Those cross-cultural experiences can really stretch and challenge anyone. They can give you a different perspective on life. However, I think mission trips for students can end up becoming more about the experience for the student than about meeting the needs of the people they are serving.
This is my first year leading our high school ministry, and I set out to come up with the best mission trip experience possible for our students. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that giving our students the best experience is kind of selfish. The mission trip is not about us, it's about the people we serve.
In the mean time, I sat down with Rodney Matthews from Urban Vision, a ministry to kids and families in the North Hill area of Akron. It's a phenomenal ministry that our church has supported for a long time, but in order for them to operate, they heavily rely on the support of churches and others to come alongside of them. Rodney started explaining to me all the needs that their ministry had, and all the ways that people could help. They needed financial support to run all their programs, and they needed volunteers to come along side them in their existing programs to help run them.
That's when it hit me. Why would we attempt to get our kids to spend thousands of dollars to go thousands of miles away when they could spend a small amount of money to go 15 minutes away and make a longer term impact? And the best part is that I believe that they could have the best experience of missions to date. That's why I am excited to announce that we are headed to Urban Vision in Akron for the Porch 2015 mission trip on June 14-20. It will be like any other mission trip, but it's just right in our backyard. There are more details to come, but here are a few more bonus reasons why this is going to be a great trip.
The cost will be low, but 66% of the cost per student will go directly to the ministry.
This will be a cross-cultural experience only 15 minutes away from home.
The cost, the location, and the safety will make it very easy for almost every student to attend.
Everyone on mission trips wishes they could stay involved with the people all year around, and since this is local, they very much can.
As a matter of fact, we are already starting to connect with Urban Vision by raising money over the holidays for them.
