Admiring the beautiful dresses had been enough to make Valerie want to attend but the awkward socializing and formality of town hall seemed out of place for her. It seemed out of place for them both but she still wanted to go, she hadn’t expected him to want to join her though.

“Oh Toddy are you asking me to be your date?” Valerie asked with a sweet smile before giving him a small nod. “I would love too,”

If it hadn’t been for Valerie, he never would have even thought to go to the ball, he actually would have avoided it like the plague. Todd hated crowds and most town sanctioned events, he preferred to stay in the comfort of his own home. “Yeah, I am, I’m glad that you got on,” he said with a slight laugh, not sure why he had been so nervous to ask her in the first place. “I couldn’t think of anyone else that I would want to go with, but I think we’ll have a lot of fun.”

Valerie had not gone to plenty of parties in her life, at least not one of the masquerade’s caliber. She had attended it maybe once out of curiosity and while she had never gone again, lately she had gathered some interest in it. It was a lot, get a dress, possibly a date, worry about dancing. It had it’s pros and cons but she was sure if Todd went she’d end up going along, even if she had to bed him to go with her because whether she wanted to admit it or not, it sounded fun.

“I might, it sounds fun but no I’m not going with anyone. I havent even found a dress yet. Are you going? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you in a suit.”

Todd had gone to the ball once or twice in his lifetime and he had never stayed for more than an hour before leaving. He wasn’t the type for parties, considering every one that he had attended mainly consisted of getting drunk with a few of his friends and that was nowhere near as formal as the ball was. While he wasn’t one to get dressed up, he was willing to do it for her.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen myself in a suit. I’ve been thinking about going, but I was also thinking that maybe we could go together? I mean, if you want, I just think we could have a good time together.”

“That seems interesting, I’ve always wanted to leave this place, at least for a while”, she didn’t expect him to apologize or give him any kind of explanation, not after the way her parents had treated him like he was below them. “That’s good, it’s good that you’re back. I’m sure a lot of people missed you”, people who were still friends with Todd, people who had been cool with him leaving, “I’m glad you had fun”.

“If you get a chance, you should.” Todd didn’t enjoy confrontation or dealing with his emotions and, when they broke up, it seemed best to disappear than drag it all out. He couldn’t help but feel bad for not telling her that he was back, it would have made this a little bit less awkward. “I think it was mainly my mom who missed me, she wouldn’t stop complaining until I came back,” he said with a slight laugh, knowing that there were a handful of people who were glad he had returned. “Hey, I’m sorry for not letting you know I came back.”

Community events weren’t really his thing, well, really any large function wasn’t his thing. Todd tried his best to avoid large groups of people, but the Masquerade Ball seemed like something that Val would enjoy going to. She was really the only reason he had even considered going in the first place, considering Todd would do almost anything that she wanted without question. He had been debating whether or not to ask her for a few days now, not completely sure how to or if she would even say yes. The last thing he wanted to do was make Val uncomfortable.

"So, are you going to the ball thing that everyone’s been talking about? I mean - are you going with anyone yet?”

“He was pretty cool before he left…”, she let out a sigh she didn’t know she was holding. Her hands began to play with the edges of the bag, was she supposed to bluntly ask him why he had left? “You’re here”, she commented, biting her lower lip, “how was your… trip? Are you back for good?”

He didn’t know why he was so nervous talking to her, maybe it was because things still felt unfinished between the two of them. Todd had left before they ever had the chance to really talk about what had happened. “It was fun, kind of ended up in a lot of places I never thought I’d see.” He still felt like he owed some sort of explanation for everything, but he wasn’t sure where to start. “Yeah, that’s the plan, at least, for now it is.”
