hi! i’m 16 y/o and i’d really like to go vegan. i’ve done lots of research and told my parents (who are supportive) so that side of things is good :) i cook 2/3 of my own meals a day so i’m able to have vegan meals but my problem is i have a really sweet tooth and i’m missing dessert things like chocolate. do you have any advice? i want to eat more plant based foods than processed ones but i’m in serious need of sweet stuff!!! thanks

hey! i was thinking about trying to go vegan. but I heard it's not really that healthy? from what I've seen on YouTube and online it makes your hair fall out? correct me if I'm wrong. I'd still like to try it, but i want to do it the right way.

Going vegan can definitely be a healthy transition! There are tons of great benefits from the diet. That being said, it would be helpful to educate yourself on the nutrients you’ll want to focus on before making the transition. The Vegetarian Resource Group is a great resource as is the book Vegan for Life by Virginia Messina.

Hi, I am currently pescetarian(vegetarian with fish) and am trying to go vegan (but keep the fish). Any tips to reduce the amount of dairy I have?

I think the best thing you can do is find substitutes! Maybe try a new vegan dairy alternative each week and begin swapping them out slowly as you find great replacements! You could start with non-dairy milks (replacing regular milk with these once you find a favorite) then the different types of cheese (there are a bunch of non-dairy ones on the market and nuts make a great cheese sauce as well) then the other options. Taking it slowly may help this be a more lasting and successful transition for you!

Hello! During the past three years of my vegetarianism, I've lost weight (which isn't good because I'm already skinny enough). I'm always feeling tired and sluggish as well. I'm 5'2" and weigh 91lbs. I figured it's because of an iron deficiency, a lack of protein maybe, but I'm not entirely sure. Do you know of any supplements that could help or am I not fit for the vegetarian lifestyle?

I wouldn’t say that you’re not fit for the veggie lifestyle just because of this! I recommend making an appointment with your doctor and getting your labs checked. If you are iron-deficient, they may recommend iron pills for you. In addition, you could start eating more vegetarian foods higher in iron.

There is a book called Vegan for life which breaks down the nutrition for a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle. I highly recommend it if you’re hoping to get more informed!

how can i have an affordable vegan lifestyle when living with a non vegan family??

Hey! Are you cooking just for yourself or for everyone in the family?

In general, vegan foods are fairly inexpensive if you aren’t buying all of the specialty products. Options like beans, whole grains, and vegetables offer a bunch of meal combinations at a low-cost and many are delicious dishes that non-vegans can enjoy as well!

How do you react to people being skeptical towards your decision to be vegan or making fun of you. Especially when they are family members ??

I usually will try to remain calm and just stand my ground. I don’t argue or try to push my beliefs on anyone. I usually feel that if others are criticizing you, they are either feeling guilty about their own actions or they are just trying to get a reaction out of you. I try to ignore the situation best that I can. I would rather spend my energy encouraging people who are interested in the vegan lifestyle rather than arguing with people who are not ready to change.

Hopefully you have some supportive friends and family members! I think sharing food and new recipes is a great way to encourage them towards a more vegan-friendly diet. Offer them recipes/dishes without emphasizing that they are vegan - just tell them they are delicious and healthy (if they are) and hopefully they will be open to trying them.
