Beato and Battler lounged in the smoking room, taking some time for leisure before they started their fourth game.

Beato: You seem to have forgotten something here, Battler. There is quite the error on your Github page.

Battler: Huh, what do you mean? I double checked it. There isn't any typos or messed up files... And surely it runs fine without any error. Ronove, Virgilia, and Gaap just ran it fine. If there's something wrong though, you can make an issue form.

Beato: Hh... Mm... Look down in the download section.

Battler: Hm?.... Oh! I forgot to add libadwaita as a dependency for people who wanna build from source. Let me right that down now! Jeez, that was embarrassing, ihihi... Didn't notice it because I already got the dependencies right on the package managers themselves.

Beato: Libadwaita?

Beato: I knew that. But there is another issue. Look more closely. At your package repository widgets.

Battler: Everything is fine and up to date. What're you on about? ... I see. Is this a trick? It's a little too early for that, isn't it?

Beato: No, there is no trick! Let me to say it in red: I am not tricking you! You forgot something on your repository buttons! It's not a typo or a broken link!

Battler: Red... Huuh, hm, then I must be missing a date or something like that...? I've glued my eyes to the screen! I don't see anything wrong. Since we aren't fighting right now, why don't you just spit it out?

A complicated expression drew itself on Beato's face, which stumped Battler. Truly, the matter was much more serious than Battler had expected, however, his program, a fuzzy finder utility, was not by any means very serious. However, the Golden Witch was a very fickle woman, so it's likely she was making something out to be more important than it was for no real reason.

Beato: You forgot to package bfinder for a major operating system.

Battler: bfinder is on Fedora, Debian, Arch, GUIX system, Void, FreeBSD, Alpine, OpenBSD, Garuda, Gentoo, Homebrew... I even have it on Slack, LiGurOS and OpenMandrive. What, do you want it on winget, too? Anything more fringe than that is pretty unimportant... It's a simple build process. Someone on a Raspberry Pi could do it themselves.

Beato: Gh...

Unusually for the witch, she looked rather meek. She didn't meet Battler's eyes at all for a few minutes, then perked back up.

Beato: N, nevermind. It's not very important. I'll be on my way now.

Battler: On your way? We're still talking though, aren't we?! If you have trouble building from source, I can help you...! Hey!

Battler reached out towards Beato, but his hands phased through. Beato had already disappeared into a cloud of golden butterflies. Battler was left on his own. Drinking the now cold tea Ronove had prepared for him, he thought about why Beato was acting so strangely. He wanted to brush it off as one of her moods, but it bothered him too much to do something like that.

Battler clicked his tongue. He was unsure how to exactly map what he felt into words... In normal, non-game related conversation, Beato didn't use red truths. This meant that Beatrice had, somewhere along the way, began interpreting their situation as a game or challenge for Battler to solve. But why? She clearly enjoyed playing mind games with him, but why would she show disappointment like this? Why would she be so expectant? Why was she acting like she did when she found out Battler didn't enjoy watching his aunt be murdered over and over? That strange, childish disappointment and expectation of understanding showed through, but there was no reason for it too. Battler couldn't be tricked into seeing her as human more than once, so why would she keep trying a method that didn't work?

Despite knowing it was a farce, something twisted in his chest at not meeting whatever expectation she had for him. It was the wrong part of his brain that sought to humanize the witch in some way and wanted to see her as genuine when she wasn't murdering his family or crushing his spirit..

Battler: ....I forgot OpenSUSE. Doesn't she use Tumbleweed?

OpenSUSE Tumbleweed was a major operating system and pretty popular, but he didn't think to include it. Would anyone on OpenSUSE even care about little utilities like this? Aren't they all just enterprise users? They probably never even use their command line. So why would he include something like that? But the same could be said for something like Fedora based distributions too, and even Ubuntu which markets itself as an enterprise solution to Linux. Following that logic, shouldn't he have only packaged 'bfinder' on hobbyist distributions?

More importantly than whatever he thought about, how did Beato interpret him...? Right, by forgetting OpenSUSE, he catergorized it with the 'unimportant' distributions, which also would imply Beato herself is unimportant, right? No, it couldn't only be that. Battler has called Beato a plethora of hateful things and she didn't seem to care... No, it's more like by not even considering OpenSUSE as an option to package for, and finding her operating system to be so unimportant he didn't even remember he wasn't even acknowledging Beato as someone worth remembering details about. It made him think back to her bizarro story about grandpa's homunculus, and how personal she took his attitude towards it, because he didn't see that nonsense as anything worth listening to.

When you play chess, you have to know your opponent inside out to make good moves. The same can be said in detective novels. The gumshoe who doesn't actually understand the motivations of the cast always ends up with faulty reasoning. If you don't understand a person, all your actions towards them will be insincere. So with this, Battler showed to Beatrice that he doesn't even care to remember the things she's expressed to him plainly. That means he doesn't even try to understand her when they fight, like she isn't even a worthy opponent. That was probably what Beato was feeling...

Battler: Ngh...

Battler hated the witch, so he should probably feel triumphant about making her feel worthless. He shouldn't care! After all, she'd rejoiced in doing that to him many times. Besides, that witch was like the weather, by the time the fourth game started she would probably be cackling again. Yet, again, the part of him that read human emotions into her made him feel regret. However, what Battler could never understand was why the witch insisted on testing him instead of just outright saying "you forgot to package for me...". Why did she just let her feelings get hurt? Stupid...!!! Useless...!!!

Battler wanted to go ahead and package bfinder for OpenSUSE Tumbleweed now, but he wasn't sure if a late acknowledgement would have its intended effect, or if it was already too late...

OCism is also killing good writings. Because writers are creating characters first before having themes and goals. That's why your story sucked.

You have a character sheet and all sorts of details but you can't write a plot to save your life. Your pacing is dogshit.

- OCism is not always for stories (especially writing), sometimes it is just thing for fun. Baby playing with dolls is not going to write a book about it

- themes are always behind the OC. It stands behind the character. You come out with one when something bothering you. The problem is in writing without understanding the theme.

- sometimes you can sit and come to The Theme and then start thinking about OC. But for creative people these themes come to live in scenes and OC in these scenes. Again, yes, to write something you need to figure it out but it is just not how it starts.

- sometimes making OC is much easier than plot the story. sometimes great lore and plot are struggling with the dullest OCs. People are different, it’s okay. All creative people make mistakes and have difficulties with their stories

I see some good point. Like you are really need some concept and understanding what you are doing here. But OCism?.. Start your story not with characters? Weird delusion tbh. But edgy and pretentious for sure

A weird quirk of ancient music notation systems

is that many contain no clear indication of rhythm. When we think of sheet music today, we'd usually picture some kind of time-based record keeping method, with things like measures to keep track of rhythm and beats. But strangely enough, this wasn't always the case with ancient Chinese musical notation (as well as many other ancient musical notation systems)

Honestly, I feel like this is the one thing that might trip up a transmigrator. If you grow up playing classical music, measure-based thinking is so deeply ingrained that it can be difficult to wrap your head around a notation system that doesn't seem all that concerned with rhythm.

When you're already putting this much effort into recording the exact fingering of each note, I can only surmise that it was a deliberate choice to not leave any indications of rhythm. Maybe it wasn't needed in a time when most people played by ear, maybe they found it too cumbersome and inflexible, or maybe they just didn't feel like it was helpful to record the exact rhythm, as it should be left to interpretation.

But yeah, the average transmigrator is probably gonna look at something like that first image and be like wtf (˃̣̣̥ᯅ˂̣̣̥), even if they already play the instrument at a pretty advanced level.

oh ive learned to play this before! havent touched my pipa in years and this sheet in particular is written for guqin not pipa but this sheet has the exact same notes as what i learned but completely different rhythm (also it sounds worse than what i learned imo hashtag iamneverwrong) a lot of these songs just arent concerned with rhythm. you can just play them however the hell you want. although there would usually be a good way to play every song and if you dont play it with that rhythm your teacher gets mad at you but i do distinctly remember there being a song (dont remember which one. could even be this one for all i care) where theres a section that literally says on the sheet music 'hey play this section however the fuck you want' and its just a jumble of notes with no bars in between them

also ancient people just hate punctuation for some reason and they think you can figure out where the text pauses i wouldnt put it below them to leave it to other people to figure out where the music pauses too.

Looking at some of your work, it is stunning but it is very similar in style to AI artwork, do you have any recommendations for how to tell apart photography like yours from AI.

I've been thinking about this. And this may sound controversial at first, but I'm hoping people will hear me out.

We should stop trying so hard to detect AI art.

I think we should all lift that burden from our brains.

I have often talked about "woke goggles." Where conservatives have lost the ability to enjoy anything because they are hypervigilant about detecting anything woke. They've cursed themselves into just hating everything. All they have left is the "God's Not Dead" Cinematic Universe.

And I worry people are getting AI goggles now. They are so concerned about accidentally enjoying robot art and hurting artists that they have overcorrected to the point where they are hurting artists.

One cannot say "AI is all soulless slop that always looks bad" and then accuse a real artist of making something that looks like AI and not hurt them. By doing so, it includes the baggage of all of the "slop" comments along with it. This crusade is having collateral damage to the very artists we are trying to protect.

Yes, we need to be cautious about malicious AI images. Misinformation and deepfakes are going to be a big problem. People using AI imagery for profit is already a mess. But if you are cruising your feed and like a cool sci-fi robot gal or a photo of a waterfall and it turns out to be AI... that's fine.

It was trained by real artists and AI is going to create some cool shit because of that.

Honestly, I think a lot of the worst slop is because the dipshits creating the prompts have no artistic taste. People keep blaming the AI for how bad it looks and often don't consider it is a product of the loser who published it.

There is plenty of non-slop out there that has fooled me. And, like it or not, it is going to get harder and harder to tell what is AI. Until there are better tools or better regulations, I don't think there is much we can do to avoid enjoying AI art every once in a while. If only by accident.

Current "AI detectors" are mostly a scam. Even the best forensic-level AI image detectors struggle to stay above 70–80% accuracy across a wide range of models and image types. And that's in controlled lab conditions.

Free online tools often drop to near coin-flip accuracy (50–60%), especially with newer image generators and post-processing applied.

The best way to avoid AI imagery is to look at an artist's body of work. It's much harder to create consistent, non-obvious fake images in a large sample size. That is usually enough to have confidence in authenticity. Plus, if they have posted similar art before 2022, you can pretty much rule out any shenanigans.

But images you see in the wild, just let yourself enjoy them if that is what your brain wants to do. It'll be okay.

I just think we are attacking this backwards. If we want to protect artists, we need to support them.

Calling out random AI art does not support them.

It does not put money in their pockets.

It does not grow their audience.

Over a decade ago I tried to lead a fight to create better systems of attribution on websites like Reddit and Imgur. I even spoke to the Imgur team after an article was written about me.

I asked them to allow sources on their posts and to develop tech that would help people find where an image came from. They said they were "working on it" and it never manifested.

But we just kind of accepted it. No one really joined me in my fight. The prevailing defeatist attitude was, "That's just the way it is."

I think now is the time to demand better attribution systems. We need to be vigilant about making sure as many posts as possible have good sourcing. If an image on Reddit goes viral, the top comment should be the source. And if it isn't, you should try to find it and add it.

Just to be clear, "credit to the original artist" is NOT proper attribution.

And perhaps we can lobby these image sharing sites to create better sourcing systems and tools. They could even use fucking AI to find the earliest posted version of an image.

And it would be nice if it didn't require people to go into the comments to find the source. It could just be in the headline. They could even create little badges "made by a human" for verified artists.

Good attribution helps artists grow their audience. It is one of the single most effective things you can do to help them.

There are maybe 10 popular artists who I helped grow their audience early on. Just because I reblogged their work and added links to all of their social media. I even hired my best friend to add sourcing information to every post because I believed so much in good attribution.

Calling out AI art may feel good in the moment. You caught someone trying to trick people and it feels like justice. But, in most cases, the tangible benefits to real artists seem small. It impedes your ability to enjoy art without always being suspicious. And the risk of telling someone you think they make soulless slop doesn't seem worth it.

But putting that time and effort into attribution *would* be worth it. I have proven it time and time again.

I also think people should consider having a monthly art budget. I don't care if it is $5. But if we all commit to seeking out cool artists and being their collective patrons, we could really make a difference and keep real art alive. Just commit to finding a cool new artist every month and financially contributing to them in some way.

On a bigger scale I think advocating for universal basic income, art grants for education and creation, and government regulation of AI would all be helpful long term goals. Though I think our friends in Europe may have to take the lead on regulation at the moment.

So...

Stop worrying about enjoying or calling out AI art.

Demand better attribution from image sharing sites.

Make sure all art has a source listed.

Start an art budget.

Advocate for better regulations.
