You’ve told Hanta you’ve wanted a pet as your birthday present for the past month, but you didn’t know whether or not he’d been listening to you.
“I mean, but what kind of pet? There’s a ton of different kinds that you could get!” Your boyfriend always gave you his trademark grin, teeth showing and all as he perused through your list ranging from a fluffy puppy to a slick weasel, hell, even an annoying parakeet. “Even then, we don’t really have the money to buy one, babe.”
“You don’t have to go and kill my dream like that, jeez!” Your fake sadness and pouting convinced Hanta, if only for a second, that you were genuinely upset with him.
“Aw, babe, you know I would-”
“-if I could, yeah, I know. There’s gotta be some way, though!”
The conversation was always the same; he didn’t have the money for it. But under that convincing grin of his was a facade; he knew he had enough money to adopt any animal of his choosing from the local animal shelter, but he didn’t want you to know that.
Soon the day of your birthday came, and a knock came at your apartment door. You assumed it was your boyfriend, yes, but you weren’t expecting him to come with a huge box.
“Happy birthday, babe!” Hanta came inside your apartment and left his shoes as the door, giving you a quick kiss on the lips.
“Is that my present?” You eagerly tried to take the box from him, but he pulled it back just before your fingers could touch it.
“You’re not allowed to open it yet! I want you to put this on.”
He handed you a blindfold, urging you to put it on as he made his way to your living room to set the box down. Confused, you went ahead and put it on if only to get your present. When he was finished setting the box down in the living room, he came back and put your hands on your shoulders.
“Alright, you’ve gotta let me guide you to the box!” Hanta pushed you forward and down your hallway, stopping right as the flooring changed to tile. “When I take the blindfold off for you, go straight to the box and open it; trust me, you’ll love it.”
As soon as his fingers hit the blindfold, you sat down on the ground in front of the ‘wrapped’ gift. Lifting up the top, a black kitten peeped its head out and mewed, and all you could do is stare. Hanta said you weren’t getting any sort of pet for your birthday because of how expensive they were, yet here one was.
“It’s a kitten!” You smiled and picked up the furball, placing it on your floor and letting it explore. “Hanta, you told me that you weren’t getting me a pet!”
“Well, sometimes you have to tell a little white lie for suspense. This little guy was the smallest out of a litter of kittens that were available for adoption, so it made me think of how cute you are!” He smiled, sitting on the floor beside you and petting the kitten. “Do you have a name for him yet?”
“Yet?! I just met him a minute ago and you already think I have a name?!”
“Well, you can always just call him Furball.”
“How about we just think of a name later? I’m sure he must be hungry. Did you buy him any food?”
That’s when Hanta’s face went blank.
“I was supposed to get that stuff?”
“Hanta! Of course you were!” You sighed, putting a hand over your face. “Well, I guess I know where we’re going.”
