initially introduced as the somewhat shrewish wife of everyone’s favorite chief engineer, miles o’brien, keiko develops into a strong woman living in a difficult situation who always does what she thinks will keep her family safe. an accomplished botanist, when keiko doesn’t have much to do after chief o’brien is transferred to deep space 9, she founds a school for the children on the station and stands firm in her belief that science should be taught in school, not religion. when her school is bombed by bajoran extremists, she doesn’t run. and later, when she is injured in a shuttle pod accident, she welcomes into her family her second child’s surrogate, kira nerys, who had at one point supported the woman responsible for keiko’s school being bombed. keiko bravely survived countless attacks on both the enterprise-d and deep space 9, and supported her husband’s work while still being an equal and vocal partner in their marriage.
