so. what's with "ebi-chan?" ^^
“Uh? Nothing’s up with me, what-” Ebisu answered automatically before the nickname set in. His cheeks burned red and he scrambled to backtrack.
“Nothing is with ‘Ebi-chan’ because there’s no one named Ebi-chan, here or anywhere! Even if there was, I wouldn’t know about it! It sounds embarrassing and lame and weak and childish, things which I emphatically am not! So! Nothing is with that name! So don’t bother saying it!”
what's the best advice you've taken?
“Gai told me not to judge a book by its cover.” Honestly, most of the things Gai had told him would probably could as the best advice Ebisu had taken --well, the bits and pieces he actually listened to from Gai, anyway.
What was going through your mind during Pain's invasion of Konoha?
“I thought that I was going to die. I had to protect my students, I refused to sell out Naruto, so I thought... I’ll put up a fight like Gai would. I’ll die like Gai would. I never agreed with his philosophies on life and death, but they were all I could think about during the invasion, especially since Gai himself was out of the village at the time. I even put more of the taijutsu he taught me to use than I’d ever had to before. I drew the Path’s attention to me so Konohamaru could run, and in the back of my mind I wondered, is that how Gai’s dad felt...?”
“Well. It was a moot point anyway. Konohamaru himself saved me, so that line of thought ended up going nowhere...”
We’re supposed to be their teachers, but we can’t do anything at a time like this. All we can do is believe in them and root for them.
Kakashi, to Ebisu (Chunin Exam on Fire! Naruto vs. Konohamaru!)
Young Genma and Ebisu. With adults who may be their parents?
Guy has read the books, and now, Genma has read the books. His whole team. Finally seeing the true light of day.
Boundless pride flowed through Ebisu like streams of tears. In some small, meaningless way, maybe he had won.
How are your parents like?
“Strict. High-class. I had quite a few expectations to live up to.”
Ebisu-san, have you ever been in love? 💕💕💕
“Ah, I suppose... Something like that. I’m no stranger to love.” He cleared his throat and adjusted his glasses professionally, then added, “Of course, a shinobi must always be willing to choose the mission above all else, so... It’s nobler to be in the thralls of passion rather than in love, in a way...” More bearable, as well. Who needed dates, excuses to train together in tank tops and shorts were better.
How do you counter the harem jutsu
“I don’t know, but if you figure it out, tell me!”

What did you like most about tutoring Konohamaru? And what did you dislike most?
“I can’t overstate my pride in Konohamaru! He’s a bright kid, with so much power, and he’s grown up so much! He’s strong inside and out. His parents are both so dedicated to their Anbu jobs that I think they’ve forgotten they have a son at all. He used to be so lonely, until he met Naruto and Moegi and Udon. Seeing him grow feels me with pride as his tutor.” Ebisu wasn’t the sappy type, but sometimes he loved Konohamaru as if he were his own son, even if at first he had jumped at the job because he was the grandson of the respectable third Hokage.
“I just... wish he wouldn’t put so much time into practicing his more... questionable jutsu.” Ebisu rubbed his nose.
What's the best Icha Icha novel? I'm trying to get into the series.
“You came to the right man for advice! Don’t listen to what classless, tasteless heathens have to say– Icha Icha Violence is the best book in the series, bar none! It is truly Master Jiraiya’s magnum opus! It is the second book of the series, but I suggest you start with it, it will get you hooked in no time!”
“I hesitate to even compare it to Paradise! Icha Icha Violence is just far too superior! I have never seen the bonds between a man and a woman painted so stirringly, the clash of desire so explosive!”
twicebloomed:
Gai feels a spike of annoyance at the jab but it looks like his plan worked and his targets took the bait.
“I didn’t ‘skim’ anything; I read it thoroughly and out of all of them I enjoyed Innocence the most. What’s so wrong with that?
It has the deepest character exploration and development and it’s the only book where the–the , uh, coupling felt truly earned, in my opinion.
Even when I happy that certain characters got together in the other books, I wished we had gotten to see more of their relationship, ah, outside the bedroom… Innocence’s focus on the world building was a refreshing change of pace.’
[gai is actually. actually. talking about icha icha. should kakashi feel strange about blushing? it’s from the embarrassment of knowing the same person who has youth emblazoned in his soul has leafed through master jiraiya’s works. yeah. that’s it.]
“nothing, i didn’t… think you would–”
[kakashi lets gai speak over him, because there aren’t words. he has so many questions. worldbuilding, gai said. worldbuilding. that means gai has spent some time thinking about these stories more than on a superficial level, doesn’t it?]
Ebisu was still speechless at Kakashi’s taunt –he was being peer reviewed already in this awful conversation, and it wasn’t an experience he planned to ask for purposely. He wasn’t that much of a masochist, least of all for Kakashi.
He was somehow even more speechless at the news that Gai wasn’t just interjecting to be the voice of reason to stop the argument, he actually had read the books enough to back up his argument. Ebisu was still stunned that someone could read the entire series thoroughly enough to have thoughts on its worldbuilding, and still prefer Innocence, of all things.
“I can’t say I ever expected you to ever pick these books up, Gai…” He folded his arms across his chest and tried to imagine Gai sitting through the books. It was definitely Kakashi’s influence –Ebisu would have never been able to convince Gai to start one of the books, but he’d run through fire and hail for Kakashi over there. “Rather than worldbuilding, it’s about scenebuilding. Why focus on the setup of the the hot springs and how the sake tastes, when your could focus on the rippling muscles of the protagonist’s back as he slowly slips out of the bathrobe and lets water run through his hair. Cutting it short and fading to black for the sake of innocence is just…”
He knitted his brows in thought before they raised with realization. A brilliant idea! He truly was a genius.
“You’re just not used to the these sorts of books! There are intricacies and literary patterns that it takes an experienced eye to discern, and you’re simply inexperienced searching for them. I can tutor you to teach you the best ways to appreciate Master Jiraiya’s works and other works like it! I can teach you all the best parts of it!”
Sensei! for: anon.
why do you wear your shades?
Truth be told, his eyes were just sensitive. That, and the shades looked amazing --these were rare, authentic Aburame-brand glasses, which was easily Konoha’s coolest clan.
“I have them as an important defense system!” he lied. “They render me immune to jutsu meant to daze such as Lightning Illusion Flash of Lightning Pillar! As Konoha’s most skilled instructor, having a strong defense and being resistant such feints is important!”
