Hi Everyone, we’re going to make some changes and focus on a couple things when dodgeball starts up again in April.
I’m doing this to keep Tokyo Dodgeball as fun and welcoming as possible, to encourage better sportsmanship and keep the courts balanced.
𝙁𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙤𝙣 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙗𝙚 𝙢𝙞𝙭𝙚𝙙. No more beginner and advanced courts. We will try to switch teams and courts a couple times during the event to make sure things are balanced. Dodgeball used to always be mixed and it was a much better experience then.
𝙏𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙊𝙪𝙩. Play fair and go out when you are hit, and accept that being out is part of the game. Use this opportunity to talk to other people in the out line.
𝘿𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙨𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙘𝙝 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙩𝙨 𝙪𝙣𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙞𝙩’𝙨 𝙖 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙢𝙤𝙫𝙚. For example, you want to switch to play with some friends. Constant switching unbalances the number of players and gives you more playing time at the expense of others.
𝘼𝙗𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙣𝙤 𝙨𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙩𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙖 𝙜𝙖𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙖𝙡𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙮 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙚𝙙. This is an old rule that sometimes isn’t followed. See above, when you are out you need to Take Your Out, not jump into another game and keep playing. Tell me if you see anyone doing this.
𝘽𝙚 𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝. This is meant for regular players or new players who play aggressively. I know it’s difficult, and we all want to play our best at all times, but I think you’re a better person if you go easy on new people. Try to be aware of situations and let them have fun and stay in the game if possible. Again, this is a tough guideline to follow but I’ll appreciate it if you do.
And that’s it! Thank you for reading this far, if you want to read more about why I’m making these changes I have over 2000 words written for you.
As always if you have any questions or ideas please write or talk to me, I’m not afraid to change or admit if I’m wrong (which never happens).
𝙎𝙚𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙞𝙣 𝘼𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙡!
Conan! Join us tonight in Shinjuku!
Announcing our 2018 Summer League! We don’t really have leagues in Tokyo due to scheduling difficulties, but screw it, it’s finally happening! Almost every other city in the world with dodgeball present primarily has a league-based format, with open gyms (our regular weekly games) as a supplement.
I think Tokyo dodgeball is ready for the international stage and I’m planning on taking a team to the world championships next year, but before then we need to improve drastically, and having leagues is the best way to do that. We often have tournaments which are by far the most competitive dodgeball we play, and a league is like one big tournament over two or more months. Strategy and skill will be even more important that ever, and that’s the goal. But of course it will also be incredibly fun! Current schedule (will update the beginning of each month): July 3 - Daizawa July 10 - Daizawa July 17 - Higashitamagawa July 24 - Daizawa
Balls for sale! $12 each, slightly less if you buy in bulk. Ships from Japan. This is the official dodgeball of Tokyo Dodgeball! If you run a league or dodgeball group then you know how hard it is to find balls. Basically it’s impossible. Lots of leagues use inferior foam dodgeballs for this reason.
Inflatable, soft, smaller-size balls (not kickballs) like this one cannot be bought online, anywhere. Go ahead and search, I looked around for over a year before I spent another year searching for and negotiating directly with a manufacturer. Our group currently uses two types of balls. One type I have been buying from a supplier in America (another dodgeball league). Those balls are 8″ and made of PVC. Do not be fooled - lots of people say the balls are rubber, but they’re not. This type of ball is PVC per the manufacturer. Those American balls are a bit thicker than the ball above and break relatively frequently, to the point where we’ve gone through about 100 balls in a few years. The ball in the photo is 7″ and also made of PVC. Essentially identical to the other balls we use except they’re 1″ smaller and the plastic is thinner. That might sound bad but since we’ve been using the balls (going on nine months) not a single one has broken. I’m stunned. Either the manufacturer I found is higher quality or the thicker plastic of the other balls actually leads to more breaks, maybe because the balls are less flexible. It’s hard to tell the difference between the two unless you’re holding one in each hand, and our smaller balls (ha ha) hurt less because of the smaller mass. So, finally, there is a second supplier of inflatable dodgeballs, please send me a message if you’d like to buy some!
2018! Currently all updated dodgeball info, including games and other events, can be found on meetup here - https://www.meetup.com/Tokyo-Dodgeball-Friendship-Club/
Meetup isn’t perfect, but it’s the best way so far to create and manage events and to make sure everyone can see them. Please join our group there and check out our future events. We just finished our yearly March break (due to school graduations we can’t use the gyms) and there will be dodgeball almost every Monday every week, as well as the occasional Sunday and Wednesday/Thursday games. This June will be our 4 year (!!!!!) anniversary. Thank you everyone for being a part of this amazing group!
Three years of Tokyo dodgeball! I can't believe I just wrote that sentence. It was almost four years ago now that I sat in a cubicle in Los Angeles and made up my mind to move to Japan. A few days later I created the Tokyo Dodgeball facebook page with the goal of hosting just one game in Tokyo - not knowing if or how I would do it. Because of what happened in that cubicle there is now a baby on the way, two marriages, three engagements, a baker's dozen long term relationships, and uncountable friendships and lifelong memories. Thank you to everyone who has ever played, it's because of you that we are the nicest, most fun, and happiest group in Tokyo, and I feel like the luckiest guy in the world.
Click the Paypal button above to donate and join the event! On Saturday, May 13th, 2017 we’re hosting a charity walk from Shibuya Station to Tokyo Disney (actually Kasai Seaside Park, right next to Disney). Full details here: https://www.facebook.com/events/582595575244532/ It’s a charity walk and a party all in one! I've been wanting to give back to the schools that host our dodgeball games for some time now, so here's how we're doing it:
All proceeds will go to the Shinjuku School for Children with Disabilities! They have a huge need for various types of equipment for the children that go there so I think it will be a big help.
***We are trying to get corporate sponsors for the event and since the school is a public institution an additional non-profit charity might be necessary. We have a couple in mind and may be splitting the proceeds between the school and a non-profit.
Walk will start in Shibuya and end in Kasai Seaside Park (next to Disneyland). Total distance is about 17 km, it should take around 4 - 4 1/2 hours.
Teams can be from 3-5 people. Cost is 2000 yen per person (2100 via Paypal). Payment must be made in advance, either in person at a dodgeball game or via paypal - just click the button at the top of this post to donate and reserve your spot!
There will be photo challenges throughout the course (take a group photo in front of Rainbow Bridge, Statue of Libery, Gundam Statue, etc).
Other than that the rest is up to you! Stop for lunch on the way, ride the ferris wheel in Odaiba, it doesn't matter. We will have suggested stopping points so that everyone will be able to finish by 3 PM as we'll have a big picnic with all the participants.
We will have some drinks and snacks prepared for each person as they finish the walk.
More details to come but please save the date...
March 13th News:: Dodgeball games start back up April 9th! Spring tournament with special rules tentatively scheduled for April 30th May 13th we will be hosting a charity walk from Shibuya to Disney Sea to benefit the Shinjuku school for children with disabilities! We’ll be introducing a new sport to Tokyo sometime in April/May (an outdoor sport) Cool cool cool
We have our last March game on March 8th (Wednesday), after that no games until April. This happens every year because of school graduations.
BUT - we are going rollerskating on March 11th! All info on meetup as always.
New changes coming
We just synched with tumblr with our web address so this will, in time, become the hub for all Tokyo dodgeball things.
We have a new website!
Click here to see our new site with our upcoming schedule. I’ll start posting news items once we build that into the site, ha ha.
I also want to encourage everyone to use our meetup.com page, all events are posted there too and it’s the best way to get details.
NEW: The Newest News!
March is upon us and that means Japanese schools are having their graduation ceremonies. Which unfortunately means we cannot use their gyms. So there is NO DODGEBALL for the rest of March.
Our next game is Monday, April 11th, and every Monday from then on.
We will also have a variety of games on Wednesdays and Sundays, so as always check out our Meetup page for the latest.
We are currently working on a new website!
For now, the best way to join us is to sign up at Meetup.com and join our group there. We create events for all our games. Here’s our direct link:
