Promise Me You’ll Never Leave (Bucky Barnes Royal AU)

plot: bucky is the stableboy and you are the princess and the both of you are in love. bucky needs to leave the kingdom before he is hanged for a crime, but you don’t let him leave without you.

A/N: i haven’t posted on here in a long while. i hadn’t even logged onto tumblr until a month or so ago. it was a compilation of life happening and also i don’t know if i still feel passionate about harry as i used to. i’ve always been writing stories that i wish i could live through, and the past year, i have gone through some of the motions of what i always wanted. it’s strange to come back a whole different person. but i’ve never stopped loving writing, and everyone still following this little blog, and i hope this is the beginning of something more. anyways, this isn’t even about harry. i watched the falcon and the winter soldier  and fell in love with sebastian stan. what can i say. i thought it would be better to post it randomly than have it sit in my google docs. hope u enjoy xx

The nights in the castle are always quiet, and this never used to bother Bucky—hell, he was even thankful for the quiet after everything he’s been through—but tonight, the silence was eating him alive.

“Doll,” he tries, but the sound gets lost halfway across the room. It’s dark, but he can still see you shaking as you crouch down over Rafe’s body, his blood pooling all the way to the soles of his boots. “Doll—”

“He’s dead.”

It’s the first thing you say that night that isn’t a scream. And he almost wishes it was, because the voice that comes out of your mouth as you whirl around to face him doesn’t sound like you at all. He watches you look down at your hands, covered in a fresh coat of blood, and panic courses through his veins.

And suddenly, he’s on his knees in front of you. “It’ll be okay. Look at me. It’ll be okay.”

You don’t believe him. You’re practically hiccuping with fear as you glance back at the body, and then at him, and back again. Bucky lifts a hand to touch you, but stops when he realizes that his hands are coated in blood too. 

But that wasn’t even the worst of it. The knuckles on his right hand were torn open, and he doesn’t know why he doesn’t feel the hurt at all. He makes sure to hide the frown on his face when you look back at him.

“W-What are we going to do?” you ask. You’re dizzy, and you’re certain that if it wasn’t for the dead body on your bedroom floor that you would’ve passed out by now. You clear your throat and try again. “Bucky, what are we—”

He interrupts you. “We’re not going to do anything.” You furrow your eyebrows as you watch him rise and walk over to the bathroom. You hear the faucet run. You think about the blood flowing down the drain, and it makes you sick.

“Bucky?” You go after him and stand at the threshold between the two rooms. He’s scrubbing his hands furiously. “Bucky, what do you mean we’re not going to do anything? He’s fucking dead. We have to—”

And that word is like an arrow in the middle of his back because he shuts off the sink and spins around to face you in an instant. His chest is heaving as he waves a wet finger at you and says, “There is no we in this, Y/N. I killed him. I cracked his skull open. It is my fingerprints around his neck, okay? You’re going to be fine. You’re going to be perfect.”

“What?” He barrels past you. And that is when you catch a glimpse of your reflection in the mirror. You can’t help but let out a gasp.

Your hair is falling loosely around your face, braids be damned. Bruises line all the way around your neck from where he, Rafe, had tried to make you his. Fingernail marks on your collar bones. You don’t want to lift your dress to find out what more of himself he left on you. 

Or what more he could’ve taken if Bucky hadn’t heard your cries and came crashing into your bedroom at the right moment.

You hear the sound of your closet door shutting.

“Bucky, what are you doing?”

He has his bag on your bed and around it, everything of his that you have come to cherish in the past few months. “Darling?”

Bucky pauses at that name. He can’t even lift his head to look at you as he says these next words. “Y/N, I will hang for this. They won’t understand. I will be dead by morning.”

“Don’t say that,” you whisper.

“But it’s true!” He tears his hands through his hair and you are by his side in a second. You hold him as he falls to the ground in tears, hands over his face to hide his fear from you. “Doll, I killed a man. I killed him! I could’ve stopped when I got him off you but… but I didn’t. When I heard your scream and came in a-and saw h-him, I-I—”

You squeeze him tighter as he sobs. You don’t care that you’re both covered in blood. You need him to know you love him. 

“Bucky, you saved me,” you cry. “You saved me. If you hadn't come in, I... “ Tears spill down your cheeks, but you brush them away and take a deep breath in. “Rafe would’ve been dead soon, anyway. Once my family finds out what he tried to do… it’s only a matter of time before his head is on the chopping block. You did nothing wrong. You saved me, you hear that?”

Bucky turns to face you and you half-expect him to kiss you and tell you that you’re right, and he’s going to be okay, and that this night will just disappear into a bad dream. But his expression hardens and he’s looking down at his hands.

“Even if that were true—”

“It is.”

He sighs. “Nobody would believe me.”

“Buck, what do you mean? They’ll believe me when I tell them what Rafe tried to do.”

“Y/N.” You wince slightly at the sound of your name coming out of his mouth. He rarely called you Y/N. Always Doll. “How do I explain why I was in your corridor at such a late hour, huh? Hell, your maids aren’t even allowed up here in the middle of the night. How would I explain to them that I was near you because I can’t possibly be away from you. That I’ve laid in your bed more times than I can count? They’ll hang me for that regardless. I’m as good as dead.”

“So what now?” You feel your frustration growing. “You’re just going to hand them your head, then? Tie the noose around your own damned neck, huh? Is that what we’re doing now?”

Bucky clenches his fists. “There’s no we, doll. You’re safe from all of this. You’re the fucking princess—”

“Don’t call me that,” you snap. He whips his head up at the change in tone. “I told you to never call me that.”

He laughs and it’s daggers to your heart. “Well, Y/N, you can’t escape who you are. You are the princess and I’m just a stableboy and I should’ve never come close to you. It was my mistake.”

“It was a mistake,” you repeat, the words poison on your lips. “I was a mistake. You regret falling in love with me—”

“Don’t.”

“No, that’s what you said, wasn’t it?” You feel as if you are about to throw up. “You made a mistake, and you wished this all never happened, right?”

“Doll—”

“Don’t touch me.” You shrink away from his grasp and he looks up at you wounded. You think you can taste blood on your tongue. The room is spinning. “You don’t get to touch me after wishing you never did.”

Bucky presses his eyes shut. “I didn’t mean that. I love you. You know I love you so goddamn much I can’t live without you. Waking up next to you every morning is the only reason why I’m not yet dead. But…”

You have your arms crossed over your chest. “But what?” 

“But this was never going to end happily, was it?” His blue eyes are black in the darkness of the room. “This was always going to end with you married off to the prince of god only knows what kingdom, and me left behind. Or you married off, and me hanging in the square.”

“That’s not true,” you choke back a sob. “You and I were going to get married. Are. You and I are going to get married.”

Bucky pleads softly, “Don’t lie to me now, doll, I can’t take it.”

“I’m not lying to you.” You lay a hand on his cheek. “I would never lie to you. Please believe me.”

He holds your gaze for a long moment, and you think you have him convinced. But then at the last second he pulls away and he’s on his feet and throwing his things in the bag again. “If I want to live to see you again, I have to leave now. If I take Shadow, I can get to the next town sometime around dawn.”

You look up at him. Your voice is so soft you can barely hear it. “And then?”

But he does. “And then I’ll bribe my way onto a ship. I can disappear once I’m off this land. Even your father wouldn’t waste money on sending troops across the ocean.”

“And what about me?”

Bucky’s hands come to a still. He doesn’t look down at you. “I’ll write. Under a different name, of course, but I’ll write once I settle down somewhere, I promise.”

You shake your head. “Not good enough.”

“And I’ll come back one day,” he presses, shoving his t-shirt, the one you’ve been wearing for the past few weeks, into the bag. It will smell of you, he knows. “When the dust has settled. When everybody forgets my face, I’ll relocate to a town nearby and….” he turns his head to you, “and I’ll pray every single day to see you again.”

He sinks down to the floor and presses his forehead against yours. “I love you so fucking much. You will always have my heart.”

“Please don’t leave me,” you beg, gripping onto his shirt. You feel a tear drip down to your chin, but you’re not sure if it’s from him or you. “Please don’t leave me.”

“Doll,” he cries. “You know it’s killing me right now to think of a world without you. But this is the only way I can ever see you again. I can’t stay.”

“There has to be another way.” You’re holding onto him desperately. It’s taking everything in Bucky not to fall into you because he knows if he does, there will be no chance of him ever letting go. “We belong to each other. This can’t be how it ends.”

His lips are trembling as he pulls away from you. “I will see you again one day. I promise.”

And then it just falls out of your mouth. “Let me come with you.”

Bucky’s heart nearly stops. “What?”

“Let me come with you,” you say, more determinedly. “We can start again somewhere. Build a new life.”

“Doll, I don’t know about that.”

“Why?” The room around you is no longer spinning because your head is clear. You were going to leave with Bucky. “We’ll just do everything that you just said. Together.” You push yourself off the ground. “Give me a few minutes to gather some things and we’ll leave, okay?”

“No, Y/N,” Bucky follows you to the wardrobe. “Sweetheart, no. You can’t come with me. You can’t leave.”

You are barely processing what he’s saying because your mind has been made up. “Bucky, go get my necklace by the sink for me. It’s my mother’s, I can’t leave it behind.”

“No.”

“Fine, I'll go get it later.”

“Y/N, can you stop for a second? Can you look at me?”

You turn to face him. He inhales shakily. “I can’t let you do this for me. I can’t let you leave your home and everything you have ever known for me, you hear? It’s not worth it.”

“Bucky, you are worth it,” you press. “I’d rather sleep on the streets with you than in this castle alone.”

“But I don’t want you to sleep on the streets!” He nearly throws his hands up in frustration. “I don’t want you to know what it’s like to… to live anywhere outside of here!”

You narrow your eyes at him. “You don’t think I can make it outside? Because I can. I don’t need anything or anyone except you.”

He raises his eyebrows. “What about your mother? Your father? Your brothers? What about them?”

You hesitate for a second. “I can come back to see them in a few years, like you said. I can send letters—”

“You can’t send letters. What don’t you understand? They’re not just going to let you run away! They might not send soldiers on a ship for me but for you? The kingdom’s sole heiress? The princess—?”

“Don’t call me that.”

“The king will sail to every single land himself to find you.”

Silence.

And then: “Do you love me?”

Bucky blinks. He doesn’t even know how to respond to that.

“Do you love me?” You repeat flatly.

“I-I… of course I love you.”

“Then I’m coming with you. End of discussion.”

“Doll—”

“End of discussion. Now go get my necklace, will you? The sun’s going to come up soon. We’ll need to leave immediately.”

Bucky’s frozen in place. He watches as you slip out of your nightgown and tug on a pair of trousers. You don’t even hesitate to push past your ballroom gowns and reach into the back of your closet instead to dig out more plain tees.

He doesn’t even let his heart lurch at the possibility of spending forever with you, because of one little poisonous thought in his brain: “I don’t want you to fall out of love with me.”

You pause, mid-step into your boots. “Buck, there’s never going to happen.”

“If I take you away from here, one day it will. One day, you’ll wake up and realize that I can’t give you anything more than my love. I can’t give you a castle with servants and a feast for every dinner and diamonds for your wrists and one day, maybe not today, but one day you’ll hate me for it. I can’t live without you, but I would rather be away from you than watch you fall out of love with me.”

You smile sadly, “If you leave me tonight, I will never forgive you. But if you let me come with you, I promise I will never stop loving you. I just need to be with you for the rest of my life. Please let me.”

And Bucky can’t stop himself anymore.

He closes the space between the two of you and presses his lips onto yours. You taste of salt and tears and copper and blood and love and love and love. “I love you,” he says between kisses. “I love you. I love you. I love you.”

“Promise me you’ll never leave me.”

“I swear on my life.”

New Year’s Day

happy new year 2k18-2k19. i love you all so very much.

my annual NY writing, this time inspired by 🌻 anon and the t-swift song. it’s a short one, but i hope you like it.

The last of the guests left at 4am. 

The sun was just beginning to rise when you awaken to Harry’s arms around you. Somehow, in the midst of the party, you had managed to fall asleep in the guest bedroom–too tired to complete the five-yard journey to the master’s. 

You would be lying if you had said you were surprised to find Harry beside you. Of course he found you. The last you had seen him, he was standing by the karaoke machine, mic in hand, belting the last verse of “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” with James Corden.

He hadn’t seen you leave the room and creep up the stairs, but he must’ve noticed you were missing a few moments later and made a mental note to himself to find you. 

Harry mumbles something against the sheets as you try to lift the blanket and crawl away and his eyelids flutter open. “Happy New Year,” you whisper to him in the dark, brushing the curls from his eyes. “It’s 2020.”

Hazzlot’s Follow Forever 2019

I’m not good with words so I’ll try my best at this. At the beginning of the year I was quite lost with myself, I had been writing for a while but I ended up reaching point there I wasn’t able to put my all into what I wrote. I took a break majority of this year, 11 months I stepped away from this blog (with the additional check in) but in December I came back feeling much better about my mental health and my writing. I am so thankful for all the support I had been able to receive in this past month, not only in my writing but all the friends that still looked out for me from when I made this blog in 2017 and even in 2019 I’ve been able to create more friendships. I’m rambling at this point but thank you for an amazing end to 2019, I know I wasn’t here for majority of the year but 2020 I’m hoping to be more active and develop this space better for everyone who comes to my blog. I wanted to make this post to thank everyone who’s made my dash a better place, who are the coolest people on the internet, and if you haven’t followed them yet be sure to check them out. Thank you thank you thank you once again, here’s to an amazing start to 2020, may your resolutions stick, your mental health improve, and have an amazing start to your decade 💕✨

“Are you sure it’s okay?” You ask Harry for the millionth time. “I mean, do your parents even want me there?”

He spins around from where he was currently packing his suitcase to face you with a sigh, “Y/N, for the last time, they asked you to be there! My mom loves you.”

“Okay, okay,” you start pacing in front of him, bringing your fingers up to massage your temple. “But what about the other people there? I’m cool with your family but what about the famous people? And God, Ellen Degeneres is going to be there!”

Harry laughs, then intercepts your path by pulling you into his chest. You immediately relax, taking in the oh-so-familiar scent of his cologne. “You will be fine,” he murmurs into your hair. “Besides, did you forget? I’m kinda famous too and you’re already doing great.”

“Oh, shut up,” you bat at his chest. He grins and you look up at him. “That’s because I don’t see you on TV every day and I know the real you.”

“Don’t worry about my friends, kitten,” Harry plants a gentle kiss on your forehead. “They’ll love you just as much as I do.”

The yacht was bigger than you thought.

Of course, since you came from a middle-class family, you didn’t get to see ( much less board ) a yacht as often as Harry or his friends did, so you had no one to rant about your excitement too.

Besides Anne, of course.

“Oh my God why is this so big,” you walk side-by-side with Anne, who laughs at your words. “Why isn’t this sinking yet? This yacht should be sinking! Why on earth–”

“And you must be Y/N? Harry Styles’ girlfriend?”

You and Anne both spin around to see none other than Ellen and Portia.

“Um…” was all that left your mouth. “Yes?”

A deep chuckle rang out from behind you and within a second, Harry’s arm is slung over yours. “You sound so unsure, kitten. But yes, she is my girlfriend. Nice to see you again Ellen. Nice to see you, Portia.”

You allow yourself to sink back into Harry’s embrace ( well, actually, sink back into his expensive, designer, custom-made vacation shirt ) and get lost in their conversation. On more than one occasion, Harry nudged you and asked you about your thoughts on some things–inviting you to join the conversation–but you just nodded politely and agreed with whatever he said.

More and more people showed up on the yacht, and when you peered over the edge, you saw that there was a line of paparazzi camping out on the beach, cameras already poised and ready. This was when you whispered, “Harry. Cameras.”

Your boyfriend squinted at them from beneath his sunglasses and sighed audibly. Ellen noticed this too, and said, “It’s almost the New Year and they choose to come out here and stalk us, instead of spending it with their family?”

Harry seemed to notice your discomfort, as he said, “Well, Y/N hasn’t had the chance to change yet, so we’ll see you guys after?”

“Of course,” Portia spoke up. “Nice meeting you, Y/N.”

A couple of steps away from them, you murmur, “They hate me.”

Harry raises his eyebrows, “How can they hate you so fast? You barely said anything–”

“That’s why they hate me!” You protest and he just pulls you closer, kissing you on the cheek.

“C’mon,” Harry unlocked the door that you presumed you would be sharing. “Let’s get you in a swimsuit, okay?”

“I can’t believe I’m going into 2020 with mustache!harry,” you lean your head on Harry’s bare chest. You both are lying on the side of the yacht that the paparazzi cannot see, along with the rest of Harry’s family and friends. 

Harry’s fingers don’t stop running through your hair. “You’re such a fangirl.” You giggle as he leans down and presses his lips all the way up your neck. “I can’t believe I’m going into 2020 with the girl of my dreams.”

“Cheesy!Styles, also a bonus,” you smile and find his lips with yours. But before your lips could touch, he pulls away with a smirk. “Hey, what was that for?”

“Save the New Years kiss for midnight,” he winks. “And…after midnight…we can…”

“Oh,” you wink right back. “I already love the sound of that.”

The dark waves slap against the yacht slowly but constantly, and the dim lights surrounding the pool was the only sign of light for miles. You catch a sight of Anne and Robin, and Portia and Ellen, and all the other couples and you see that Harry was right.

“You were right,” you whisper to him.

“Hm?” Harry yawns sleepily.

You turn towards him and smile at his sleepy figure, “I had nothing to worry about. I thought I was going to have to spend my New Years with my boyfriend’s friends, but I’m spending New Years with my boyfriend…who happens to be on the same yacht as his friends.”

Harry smiles back, “Well, it’s not New Years yet.”

As if on cue, Ellen stands up on a chair and yells, “TEN. NINE. EIGHT. SEVEN–”

Harry’s green eyes flicker from your eyes to your lips.

“–SIX. FIVE. FOUR. THREE. TWO.”

“One,” you both whisper in sync and your lips meet.

There were no fireworks. No explosions to welcome the New Year.

There were only one pair of lips and two pairs of heavily, beating hearts.

Don’t Touch Her

you’re in the crowd and somebody touches you while harry’s performing

You had been to one of his concerts before.

In fact, back when he was still part of One Direction, you had seen them perform together twice. Throughout the rest of your childhood and the years that carried you into your young adult life, you had been to an abundance of larger concerts.

So you didn’t see the reason behind Harry urging you to stay tucked up backstage.

“I’ll be good, I promise,” you vow, trying to lace up your sneakers without Harry pushing your fingers away. “Don’t you trust me?”

Your boyfriend sighs, snatching your left shoe up and away from your grasp. “It’s not that I don’t trust you,” he says at the same time you try lunging for your missing footwear. “It’s just that you’d be much more comfortable back here.”

“With one shoe?”

Harry raises his eyebrows pointedly, surrendering your shoe onto the ground in front of you, “With none. Why bother squeezing your feet into them when you can just walk around barefoot the entire night. Hey, you can even walk around in here totally bare if you’d like. That’s perfectly fine, and even encouraged, by me.”

Now it was your turn to roll your eyes. “Haz,” you murmur, slipping on your other shoe and rebalancing yourself. “It’s the first night of your second leg on tour. I want to support you.”

Harry bends down to where you are situated on the floor and cups your cheeks with both hands. “You are already supporting me, angel, just by being here. You don’t need to be out there.”

“I want to,” you urge, bringing your hands up to interlace your fingers with his. “I want to be out there with you. To sing along with everybody else who loves you. For you to see me in the crowd dancing along to the songs you wrote for me.”

You know you have Harry hooked. You can see it in the subtle shift of his eyes. Only a couple of seconds have passed before he’s giving in and saying, “Okay, fine. But you’re going into the VIP box.”

“Harry–”

“It’s the VIP box or nothing.”

Somebody comes in to inform him that he needs to head into hair and make-up. Before he darts out the door, he kisses you one last time on the forehead and whispers, “I’ll see you out there.”

7 Missed Calls

you get into a car accident when harry’s in the middle of a concert.

You had just gotten off the phone with Harry thirty minutes ago. You had called him in a panic, explaining how you had less than ten minutes to get from one side of the city to the other for an extremely important job interview. 

Harry had reassured you in that deep, soothing voice of his that you were going to be fine. That everything was going to be fine. And you believed him. Hell, nobody–not even a psychic–could’ve predicted the events that would transpire.

Your boyfriend of 2 years was currently in Manchester for four nights. You two had last seen each other in person about a few weeks back when you surprised him in London. 

“I missed you so much,” Harry had murmured against your lips, “and I still miss you now, because after a few days you’re just going to turn around and leave me again.”

“I’m never going to leave you. I promise.”

It was in the middle of Woman when it happened. That is–Harry’s phone ringing backstage. It was on silent, and it was locked up in his dressing room.

Thus, the first call went unanswered.

Never In A Million Years

you and harry get into a fight, and you think he’s going to hit you.

trigger warning: violence, emotional/physical abuse, swearing and name-calling

You watched Harry silently as he brewed himself a cup of coffee. 

It was nearing midnight, but the both of you knew that this fight was going to last long. At this point in time, approximately half an hour in, you had almost forgotten what you were fighting about. Only that you were angry–really angry.

And Harry was too.

“Are you done??” You ask, impatiently wringing your fingers together. Your voice was toxic. 

But so was his. “Be a little patient, will you?” He growls. “Jesus, it’s only been two minutes.”

You leap off of the counter—where you’ve been sitting–to stand beside him, your back against the sink. He doesn’t even bother to lift his gaze to meet yours. “You haven’t answered my question yet, Styles. How long do you expect me to wait?”

For a moment, the only sound came from Harry stirring his cup of caffeine with enough strength to shatter the glass. Then, a tense whisper, “I didn’t sleep with her.”

There it was–the crux of the argument. The elephant in the room. The reason for it all.

You laugh, and it sounds crazy. “You were spotted leaving her hotel room, Harry! What do you expect me to believe? That you two were just playing cards?”

Harry slams his cup down on the counter and the drink spills down the sides. Your boyfriend doesn’t seem to notice or care, because he’s gesturing at you with the stirring spoon. “I expect you to believe me,” he barks, raising his voice to a near-yell. “I’ve told you a hundred times she’s just a friend.” 

“But you’ve slept with her before, Harry!” You exclaim. “It’s different because you loved her once!”

“Exactly!” He shouts, throwing his hands up in the air. “Once! I loved her once  and that was it.”

You sigh, running your hands through your hair. “Those feelings don’t just go away now, does it? You–”

“For fuck’s sake–!” Harry hurls his spoon into the sink, where it lands with a loud bang. It barely misses your cheek. “Can you just stop being a jealous bitch for one second? Is that so damn impossible?” Harry steps towards you the same time you take a step back. “Every fucking time the paparazzi catch me out with some girl, you fucking accuse me of cheating on you! I’m so sick of it!” 

His anger doesn’t faze you. Instead, it ignites you. “Well, my sincerest apologies for just making sure my boyfriend can keep his pants on!” You spit at him. “I’m so dreadfully sorry for being an insecure little brat who can never feel like she deserves you!”

Harry squints his eyes at you, “Oh, cut the bullshit.”

“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?”

Harry rolls up the sleeves of his sweater up to his elbows. “The bullshit ‘I’m going to start crying so Harry’ll comfort me’ shit.” 

You lift your fingers up to touch your cheeks. You weren’t even aware that you had been crying all this time.

Harry’s tattoos never looked as intimidating to you as they did in the present. “Do you know how many hours of my life I had sacrificed for your anxiety attacks? Hell, I had to skip out on one of my concerts because you decided to check yourself into the hospital for a mental illness that the doctors don’t even believe you have!”

“You dick!” You yell as you push Harry back by the shoulders. “You absolute dick! Take that back right now!”

But if he hears you, he ignores you. “And what about all the boys that you see when I’m away, huh?” He taunts, “I never accuse you of cheating. But who knows? Maybe you’re just using me for money–”

“Don’t you dare,” you cry. Shoving him back with even more force. He loses his balance for a second this time. “Don’t you fucking start. I love you with all my heart.”

“Sure as hell doesn’t seem like it,” Harry snarls as he advances onto you. “It seems like you’re just an insecure little brat who likes to have a little money.”

“Oh, don’t you fucking–” but before you get the chance to shove him back again, he’s raising his right hand high above your cheek. All of a sudden, almost like an instinct, you shield your face from him and wince visibly. 

The last thing you hear before bringing your forearms up to shield your face is a loud gasp. And it didn’t come from you. The next thing you hear is footsteps…trailing away from you. 

Confused, you look up to see Harry backing away from you with a horrified expression. His chest was heaving up and down in a panic, his green eyes tragically fixated on yours. 

He’s murmuring something under his breath, but you can only catch one line, “You didn’t think…I would never in a million years–”

You were just about to say something–to ask him what was going on–when he suddenly points a shaky finger at you and whispers, “I would never, angel. I would never ever.”

Knitting your eyebrows together, you breathe, “What are you talking about?” You were still shaken up, but Harry’s ghost-pale expression was scaring you even more.

And then he started to cry. Tears poured down his face as he steadies himself by the kitchen island. “I would never,” he repeats over and over again to himself. “I would never.”

Finally, you put the pieces together. You approach Harry slowly, but even then, he didn’t see you coming until you laid a gentle hand on his back. He tenses up and tries to brush you off.

But you are tenacious. You wrap your arms around his waist with a steel grip and lean your cheek against his shoulder blades. Harry is forced to surrender to your touch with a sigh. 

His body is still shaking from his sobs, in which he releases, “Angel, I would never hurt you. I would never..I would never h-hit you or–”

“I know,” you tell him, honestly. You feel his hands wrap around yours. “I just got a little scared, that’s all.”

Harry turns around to face you, and he frowns at you as he caresses your face with his hands. “I’m sorry I scared you,” he whispers. “I didn’t mean to. I was just…I was just upset. I never slept with her, I swear.”

You swallow a lump in your throat and say, “I believe you.” But you were still hurt, and Harry could tell that.

So, he sinks down onto the kitchen floor and you do the same. There, in the safety of the shadows, Harry takes you in his arms and confesses, “I thought about it, though. Wait–hear me out.

On the road, I went a little paranoid, and a little crazy. I wasn’t seeing you, and we were barely talking, and I kept seeing all these pictures of you out and living your life. I felt…I felt obsolete. I felt like you didn’t need me anymore. So…so I thought that by getting back in touch with my ex, you would see and get jealous and…and want me again.

I know it was a stupid thing for me to do, but…but it worked. We were talking every single day, and I thought I was finally going to be okay. Then…then your anxiety attacks got worse and worse and I couldn’t do anything about it because I was a hundred miles away. I felt like shit. I felt like I was…I was causing you more pain than happiness. So I…So I–”

“You tried to push me away,” you finish. Harry nods. His sweater was stained with his tears now. 

He continues, “And…and I think that a small, selfish part of me wanted you to be okay. That if I just chose to believe that…that your mental illness was all fake, then I could have peace of mind when I was away. I…I chose to ignore it and ignore you because I’m too fucking selfish to admit that all of it was my fault.”

“No,” you shake your head and trace circles on the back of Harry’s palm. “No, it was my fault too. I…I let you push me away. I knew that you were hurting and I chose not to do anything about it. I was being petty, and wanted to make you jealous too. I just…I just love you so damn much that I couldn’t risk losing you…”

“Sweetheart,” Harry breathes, pressing a kiss to the top of your head. “I think it’s time that we went away for a little bit.”

You frown. “Went away?”

“Yeah. To somewhere nice and quiet. Like a small French town or something. I’ll take a few weeks, or months, leave and we can just be with each other for a little while.”

This time, the tears flowing down your face weren’t from sadness. “Harry,” you cry. “I’ve missed you so much.”

“Me too, honey. Me too.”
