To understand the level of deep water Louis was in, one first needed to know he has had the same best friend since he was five. Ethan Astor was family to him—a friend who he loved deeply despite their differences. A friend he would do almost anything for. So when Ethan came to him with the plan, no matter how he felt about it, Louis accepted it.

At first, it was simple, he just had to flutter his eyelashes at any of the boys that showed interest in Ethan, and if they fell for it, he just dumped them without telling them the reason. Somehow, the rumors spread around campus that Ethan had an insufferable friend they had to somehow win over to reach him. Like a final monster before getting the princess.

Or: Harry likes Louis’ best friend and there's a rumor that in order to get a chance with him, he should woo Louis first.

hello!! do you know if there are larry fics directly inspired by movies? currently watching mr & mrs smith and would love to read harry & louis in those roles haha, thank you!!!

I’m not sure if you’re both the same person, or you both had the same idea today. But here are the few I have!

The Serpent and the Lion by louiseparker (E, 212K) Despite the fact that I have zero interest in Harry Potter, I was pulled into this immediately and read all 200+K in two days. The author does a wonderful job of creating a nuanced OT5 friendship, writes great dialogue, and draws a intricate picture of life at Hogwartz. Most of all, I loved the use of flashbacks to tell the story, the deeply layered characterization of Harry, and how wonderfully he and Louis fit together and brought out the best in each other. I’m so happy I found this one.

Take My Breath Away by @realitybetterthanfiction (E, 154K) Also known as The Top Gun fic. One of the things I love about this is that it’s told from Harry’s PV and it’s such a wonderful, intimate characterization of him – you really get to see so many sides of Harry and this author writes them all so well. It’s action packed, funny, deeply moving, and has such a satisfying ending. You will be so wrung out after reading this fic – this author puts you through it, but it’s SO worth it. Great banter, great side characters, action, smut…it has it all.

my heart is breathing for this moment in time by usedtothebeach (E, 160K) Based on The Time Traveler’s Wife. Probably my absolute favorite time travel fic. I’ve read it more times than I’d like to admit, and every time I love it more. One of the things I like most is how organically the author weaves in canon events…every little moment is an easter egg without it being so obvious that it pulls you out of the fic. Anyway, this one is so moving and so absorbing, I hope you like it if you give it a try! There’s an 18K companion piece to it as well, but you’ll see the link at the appropriate time when you’re reading the main fic (and when you read the scene that breaks your heart –– in the best possible way –– come and scream at me. You’ll know which one I mean).

I would name the stars for you (I would take you there) by orphan_account (M, 91K) Based loosely on Notting Hill. This is just beautifully written. Angst. Mutual pining. Dumb boys. Beautiful descriptions of art and creativity and fame and beautiful poetry. 

Three Days Underwater by theteapirate (E, 10K) AU based on the film Weekend, directed by Andrew Haigh. This is really a beautifully written fic but I’m warning you, it’s got an open ending so if you can’t deal with that, don’t read it. But if you can….wow, it’s lovely. 

Take Me Home (Country Roads) by Awriterwrites / @a-writerwrites (E, 87K) A Northern Exposure AU. Probably my favorite of this author’s many fics. Set in rural West Virginia, this hate to love fic is funny, touching, super sexy, painful and features big city doctor Louis vs country boy healer Harry.

bloodsport by @tofiveohfive / @sunflowrsix (E, 40K) American football, exes to lovers, wonderfully written characterizations and, once again…made me cry. Loosely based on Friday Night Lights.

Yellow by 13ways / @13ways-of-looking (E, 85K) Yes, it’s Batman/Catwoman. No, you don’t need to know anything about the comics or the movies. But wow! Such good pacing, the smut scenes are fire, the concept is so original and keeps you guessing until the very end. 

Sometimes Fires Don‘t Go Out by abrighteryellow / @a-brighter-yellow (E, 17K) Loosely based on Empire Records. I love this fic. The quirky friendships, the banter, the secret crush, the banter…it’s such a fun read with a really satisfying conclusion.

You Are The Blood by sacrasticfluentry (E, 176K) If you’re a Harry Potter fan, you’ve probably read this one. But if you haven’t, what are you waiting for? I don’t even like HP and I LOVED this fic. It’s a thrilling story and it’s full of ridiculously hot smut.

The Dead of July by whimsicule (M, 117K) Even if you know nothing about MCU, this fic is a must read. Lots of angst, great writing, and what feels like very well-handled depiction of PTSD and everything else that comes along with kidnapping, torture, and amnesia. Good times. But there’s a happy ending and a 110K second part (with more angst and mental health struggles) that I haven’t read yet, but I’ve heard good reviews of!

everything that shine ain’t always gonna be gold by sarcasticfluentry (E, 49K) Based on Inception. This fic is just too good to not have read. You don’t need to know anything about the movie that inspired it. It’s got great OT5, it’s super sexy, it’s got a terrific story line, and the pacing is just right for a nail biter.

Tainted Saints and Velvet Vices by Toomanytears (E, 126K) Let me start by saying that I know next to nothing about Harry Potter, but this crossover was so much fun to read. I thought this author did a terrific job of creating a realistic hatred/rivalry and growth for both boys so when they come together it’s as good for us as it is for them (well, maybe they have more fun — the smut is slow burn, but it’s well done)!

Run Like the Devil by Benzos (E, 140K) Based on Supernatural TV series. If you like supernatural elements and demons and dark themes, this fic has it in spades. In a way it’s almost more of a character study, and it’s unsurprisingly pretty OOC, but it’s very well done. Read the tags.

we’ve got the world in our hands by sarcasticfluentry (E, 55K) A Mutants AU. I read this one ages ago with very little interest in superhero movies and I literally couldn’t put this down. It’s just really well paced and has great dialogue and characterizations and I could easily read this fic if it’d had been twice as long.

Who Painted The Moon Black by throughthedark (E, 96K) This is the Hunger Games AU. It’s super intense, there’s a lot of dark themes (the E is not for smut, let’s put it that way), but there’s a happy ending. SO well written. 

And an anon reminded me of this fic (which I haven’t read, but I know a lot of people have liked):

Why I don’t think Ever Since New York is about dealing with bad news about a family member - a lyrical rabbit hole

I feel like I should somehow apologize in advance to literally any and all sides of any fandoms covering Harry, Louis, and/or Taylor because I don’t think there’s any niche corner anywhere that’s gonna be like “yeah this is great this is exactly how I want this to make me feel”, so I’m sorry. It just is what it is. I’ll do my best to show you why this is how I interpret the lyrics, how I think they are making subtle references to each other in their lyrics and that these give away certain songs are about certain events. But seriously if you came from twitter and you think and want to keep thinking these 3 are “besties” do yourself a favor and just click away. So just to spoil the plot so you don’t have to “Keep reading” if you aren’t open to this interpretation: I think Harry’s Ever Since New York and with that Louis’ Don’t Let It Break Your Heart and a bunch of Taylor’s songs are about the time around the “Haylor” stunt, more specifically in the context of it absolutely breaking them, especially Harry, into pieces:

When The Wolves Come Out by @rosemarianthyme (2-part series, E, 7K) This is the first time I’ve seen anyone write ABO as kink exploration and I loved it. I loved how open and supportive Louis is in this series and how much that allows both of them to explore and connect. The second part of the series is actually a prequel, FYI.

I Love My Hands Around Your Neck by @fournipplesau (E, 6K) Hello... this was really hot. I just loved the dynamic between the two of them—you really get a sense of the difference between them when they play and how they interact when they’re not. Also, just really hot. Did I say that already? Yeah.

Like Waters Poured Into One Jar by Jishler / @snowjosh (E, 3-part series, 18K) I think the third part of this series is my favorite, but all of them are sexy, tender, and beautifully written. Canon kink discovery and exploration through the years... loved it.

precious little thing by mercutionnotromeo (E, 21K) I’ve read this one so many times…it’s got it all. This time the phone sex operator is Louis, and subby Harry is just beginning to realize his daddy kink.

Lay So Still by yougotmetieddown (E, 3K) This one is really hot kink exploration with great dialogue and dirty talk. Plus, you really get a sense of their relationship dynamic even though it’s a PWP

Our Lives, Non-Fiction by @indiaalphawhiskey (E, 114K) this is, quite literally, the best fic I’ve read in years. It’s so well written, clever, funny, emotional, and sexy. Its draw you in immediately and you’ll end up falling in love with these characters before you know it. Don’t miss this one.

however do you want me, however do you need me by moonshinelouis / @louislorde (E, 7K) I just love a bit of baby boyfriends and kink exploration. This one does it so well.

we can take the long way home by eleadore (E, 27K) Ok, this isn’t actually ABO, it’s a canon divergent future fic where Louis is a “carrier”, but I’m including it because it’s a little bit like ABO and it’s just SO good. It’s beautifully written (like everything this author does), so well-paced, and I just find the way their relationship is written to be so touching and realistic.

Gentle Sin by userkant (E, 8K) I love when people write about kink discovery and kink exploration. This one was sweet and sexy and I loved their dynamics. Pain kink.

into another (another) serotonin overflow by mercutionotromeo (E, 11K) I love the way this author captures the overwhelm of teenage lust and pining in this one. And at the same time, there’s something so gentle about the way the two of them are with each other.

Take Our Bodies Higher by littlelouishiccups (E, 21K) Louis finally find someone who shares his kinks. It happens to be phone sex operator Harry. So much dirty talk. So much desperation. So, so good.

Only Thing That Can Quench My Thirst by eyesofshinigami (E, 7K) basically, this is a fic about Louis being obsessed with Harry’s pubic hair. It’s so much sexier than it sounds.

like poison coursing through me by orphan_account (E, 4K) I’m always a fan of kink exploration and this one has some excellent dirty talk involved.

Sonic Sounds by glasscushion (E, 6K) So, so smutty and such a sexy exploration of kink discovery.

Hello Heaven (you are tunnel-lined with yellow lights) by objectlesson (E, 3K) Baby boyfriends discovering kinks. Lingerie, embarrassment, feminization….plus really good writing. Link is to a download.

Vinyl and Lace by objectlesson (E, 8K) Similar theme to the one above, but fleshed out more. Always excellent writing and pacing. Their smut is always terrific. Link is to a download

Could you love me anyway by @sadaveniren (E, 13K) This is a bit later – more like Princess Park Era, but they’re still quite young I particularly like the way this fic handles both kink exploration and Harry’s internal monologue of negative self talk – both felt really well realized and realistic.

Tigers Play Too Rough by Blake (E, 6K) This author always writes so beautifully and this time they tackle baby boyfriends and kink exploration. It’s just beautifully done.

Born to Make You Happy by objectlesson (E, 26K) This author writes some of the best xfactor canon fic out there. The way they write Harry is in this one gives you such a real sense of him in all his awkwardness and intense infatuation for Louis. That Harry would do anything to make Louis notice him. Even if that means embarrassing himself. Link is to a download.

Fast forward to our modern days, they haven’t seen each other since then, but one day they meet again through a mutual friend. Harry was bitter for a long time, but he accepted that being angry wouldn’t erase the fact that Louis was the love of his life. He wanted to court and spoil Louis like in their original time period, but Louis avoided him every time Harry tried to reconnect. Happy ending!

“I hate this. I fucking hate this so fucking much.” Harry began to cry. “She was only 17 for fuck’s sake. She had her whole life ahead of her! She should be researching colleges and skipping school to hang out at the mall. She should be playing with her little brothers and helping her mother in the kitchen with dinner. This is bullshit! Complete bullshit! I thought I could do this, I thought…”

He didn’t finish his sentence. Instead he kicked the brick wall before collapsing against it, his head back, rain beating against his face, mixing with his tears.

They stood in silence for a few moments before Harry looked to Louis. He saw the same sadness and sorrow as the night before. He felt the same connection, the same feeling that he and Louis were alike - both broken looking to belong.

After the little incident with the fishing wire, he’d been told that under no circumstances was he to visit the surface of the water, as he is the heir to the throne and his safety is essential to the continued existence of their underwater society. Or something. Harry loves his mum, but there’s really only so much talk of royal duty a prince can take before he does something drastic. Like purposefully disobey her strict instructions to stay under the sea for the rest of his natural life, and instead swim too close to a human ship and get himself spotted by none other than the unfairly attractive Prince Louis Tomlinson, for example.

Needless to say, Harry is fucked.
