Since the tumblr apocalypses I’ve had issues with people just not knowing what cutting a post is, or how to cut a reply. This is how you can make your posts clean and not clog people’s dash

1. Download this to your browser (I use Chrome):
Install for: Chrome | Firefox | Edge | Opera

2. Refresh your browser
3. When you refresh tumblr it’ll install and just let it do it’s thing
4. Click the xkit button in the upper right of tumblr
5. you can cancel the tour or walk through, doesn’t matter, if you learn that’s good, there’s a bunch of cool shit this thing can do
6. Go into ‘Get Extentions’ and install ‘Editable Reblogs'
7. refresh, now go to reblog and reply to a text post and it will look like this
8. click the button on the left to edit
9. type your reply, select the first portion (ie your last reply) and cut that shit outta there
10. post the sucker.
Look how clean. Repeat per replies
- side note, I’ve been keeping a title in my text posts/rps but not everyone does that so just ignore me. Helps me keep track

this tutorial will show you how to add your watermark to your work, and layers like color correction or just filters
Okay so once you have your gif ready to save (see last tutorial) go to the right side of your screen and you’ll see the layers grouped together.
1. make a text layer, or drag and drop the png of your watermark (make sure it’s png with a transparent background) from whatever folder you’ve got it in onto the top of the video group
2. DON’T FREAK OUT! When you make your text it’ll go to the end of your timeline and just above your video layer so it will look like this. You are okay.
3. Just drag the text/watermark layer up and out of the group
4. zoom out on your timeline and you’ll see the file
5. drag your text/watermark so it’s under your start and end markers for your gif
[ NOTE: I like to just extend the file length by clicking and dragging the corner of the file so it covers my timeline and the whole video file. Helps when you are trying to gif a whole file section by section ]

6. adding layers is just as easy, I like to make sure whatever layer (i.e. color correction, texture, curve adjustment) goes on top of my video layer INSIDE the video group

7. of course now we just do our little file > save for web...
and make sure our looping is set to forever, make sure our file size isn’t too large, then save
Making a Gif (with smart sharpen and correct framerates)
In this tutorial you’ll learn how to 1. make a gif, and 2. make it look good and sharp

All you will need is photoshop, the video you want to gif in MP4 format, and if it’s not you can convert it through the free program HandBrake
MAKING A GIF & USING SMART SHARPEN
1. Make sure the video file is mp4
2. open photoshop
3. open the video file
your screen will look like this:
4.now you are going to right click on you video layer and click ‘convert to smart layer’ (or lick file>convert to smart layer). Basically what I’ve found this does is it will keep your video quality even after you shrink it
5. now we are going to make it gif size, go to Image then ‘Canvas Size’
6. make sure your measurement is in pixels, then insert the size you would like. I usually go for 268x150
but this is the resource I refer to for size if you want to mix things up or are making a gif set
7. OKAY now that you’ve changed the size let’s toss that Smart Sharpen on to make it look the best it can. Make sure your video layer on the right is selected, go to filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen...
8. These are the settings I use, I just to a lens blur, Amount 55 to 60% and radius around 1.3%. I just keep shit on basic but if you want to fuck around with it feel free. Once you find something you like you can save the preset too so you can remember it with that little arrow file button next to the trash button. When you’re ready hit okay

note, both of these gifs have not had the framerate fixed, I’ll get there.
8. okay here is where you select the section of video you want to make into a gif. If you keep in mind that this whole process is more like video editing than photo editing it makes a little more sense. Go down to the timeline and move your markers (green) to the start and end of your gif [ yellow: these are the frame by frame back and forth, super helpful - red:this little arrow helps you zoom in and out of your timeline so you can be more precise with your markers ]
9. resize your video layer how you want. I like to just click ctrl+t then click and drag while holding shift to keep the ratio size
you can always resize but remember to do it after you’ve made your layer a smart layer and added the smart sharpen. Click the checkmark when you’re happy with the framing of your gif
if you want to add color correction or a watermark to your work start this now
10. play it through, make sure it’s what you want, then go to file > Save for Web...
11. these are the settings I use to export my gifs. Make sure the size is under 3MB for Tumblr
aaaand that it’s set to loop forever or it’ll play once and freeze. Again you can save these settings and just use the little drop down.
Save and you’re done. The frame rate will be fast but
CHANGING A GIF FRAMERATE:
If you feel like your gif is the right speed cool, good for you, but I’m picky as hell.
1. open your gif
2. at the time of your timeline click the little down arrow (circled it in red for ya) and then hit Select All Frames
3. now click the down arrow on the first frame (make sure all frames stay selected) then click Other...
4. I like .09 seconds or .12 seconds. If you want it slower you add more time, you get the idea. Note: you can play your gif in the timeline and it won’t really show your framerate correctly so just be aware of that
5. now save: go to file > Save for Web...
now we have something that plays better like this:

Note: this all sucks if you’re making a whole pack of gifs. Say I make about 100 gifs, all sharpened and nice but the framerate makes them move too fast and I want to slow it all down. What do I do? I ‘batch’ the framerate change option
What this means is:
BATCHING:
Before I do anything to my gif (the last 5 steps), I do this to record my actions. I just have to do it one time and then I can use it again and again
1. go to actions on the right side and click the play button
2. I pick a folder and hit the new action button (dogeared paper)
3. Name it whatever I want
4. hit record
5.now the action will record everything you do. So do everything in the ‘adjust framerate’ section of the tutorial then hit the stop button
( NOTE: where ever you end up saving your gif, that is the ONLY place you can save it to when batching, it’s different for icons but I can explain that in another tutorial just trust me and label your action based off where you export your gifs [aka be organized and have just one folder for gif exports ] )
6. now I open file > Automate > Batch...
7. we are batching GIFs so don’t worry about the bottom half of the Batch screen, in the action we created we told the files where to save so they will always save there. If you’re batching icons to add watermarks or sharpen that lower half will let you save it to a different file-- I’m rambling but ask if you don’t get it
ALL you need to do here is
- make sure the correct action is selected in the Play rectangle
- Choose your source folder
- Choose a destination folder (which it’ll override anyway)
- Click OKAY and let it run
for the sake of this tutorial I just made a handful MGK gifs but batching really works well for about 100-200 items, once you get to roughly 500 it gets a little weird so it’s best to do your batching in sections if you make that much.
I will cover adding watermarks and filters in another tutorial.
