So i took part yesterday in one of the things i hate most in our modern times, A Competition of musical talent'. I'm not talking glorified karaoke like the X Factor, all live music and what not but still, not something i'm proud to admit but hey, the prize money would have bought me a van for touring.
I've realised lately that i actually dislike these competitions more than i do the xfactor or similar over-night success style competitions because in a way, they sort of know that theyre not judging on great modern musical talent, they admit that theyre looking for something generic that will sell quickly.
The thing is that these music competition claim that theyre trying to give opportunities to hard working musicians that dont happen to be the one thing that pop music is looking for and praise originality and musical talent, and then only put through generic musical theatre type people who sing the same songs, cant play musical instruments so pay someone to play for them to make it look like they dont need a backing track, have no sense of professionalism and have about as much originality as a best selling curry dish.
This may sound to you like a petty rant by a jealous singer that got rejected, but i'd like to add that i did get through in this particular semi final to the final. I was the only person who got through who could play an instrument and sang something different that substance-less pop. i was disgusted of the great musicians that were ignored so i pulled out.
Music competitions are killing music! Nobody should ever look at great music with a pencil waiting to write a score on a piece of paper. It destroys everything!
