Here is my first completed DT3 UI project: a concept for a game called Pixelcritter.
Here is my second version of the children's book submission (screenshotted from a pdf) with a reflection included:
Overall I'm pretty happy with the formatting of this book, I like the colour scheme and the swamp aesthetic I put together, it fits together pretty well, in hindsight I could have included a little more variation between the formatting of each story and perhaps adjusted the colour palette to use slightly fewer colours (for simplicity) but otherwise I'm satisfied with this project.
My finished "children's book"!
[the brown frog and the black bug were created by me in illustrator]
Today we went through a variety of InDesign and skills including aligning an image to the page, adjusting the curve graphs of an image to make it lighter and increase contrast with the text above, using a gradient mask to limit this contrast to a specified area, blurring an image, using the content awareness tool to expand an image and creating a duotone image using photoshop image adjustments. Great stuff for formatting a presentation!
here's a bit of a blur-fest.
For the second half we integrated Adobe Illustrator into our workflow process through the production of a pattern with a hexagonal grid and a beautiful bird. Here are the results.
A beautiful collection of screenshots from the first half of our last lesson. We used tools such as parent pages, margins and columns and the rectangle tool throughout the session.
The rest of our first InDesign lesson, in which we learned how to add/manipulate images and wrap the text around them regardless of their shape.
Screenshots from the first half of our first InDesign lesson. We're learning how to use text boxes and how to move them in different ways, and how to create columns.
These are the images I'm photoshopping in to the image of the jumping person. The vector graphics I made are included in the process screenshots shown below:
I added in the explosion lines and dots in orange/yellow as smart objects to enhance the groovy/funky vibe, though upon reflection I could have chosen colours that match the rest of the image better (including for the snake) to make the final image look more coherent and tied together. I added the animals in, removing the background with the mask tool, because they made the most sense as to what might be in the forest street background. I'm mostly pleased with the final design, but I don't like it that much, I could've probably chosen an easier-to-work-with background in terms of the perspective.
For my colour graphic I'm replicating this shot from the Iron Giant, including colour and shading. I'm planning to stylise it a bit by enhancing the colours, bringing out more saturated hues of green, purple, orange etc.
I used the pen tool, the layers window, the colour window and the fill tool throughout the creation of this. The lines took a while but the colour was fun and fairly quick. I considered using gradients but in the end decided against it because I felt it would overcomplicate the graphic, as it looks more visually appealing and less tacky with simple block colour. Using gradients in a way that looks good would've simply taken more time than I have.
And finally I completed it! I'm very happy with how this turned out, my best piece of work so far for this.
For my first Illustrator vector graphic, the black and white one, I'm using this succulent drawing as my reference. I will include minimal grayscale shading for added effect, and to match the reference image to a greater extent. I'll mostly be using the pen tool and the fill tool.
Things are going well, with the lineart and colour complete. I traced over some of the lines again to keep the fill colour in behind the lines, as the lineart got a bit tangled and it was too hard to go back and rearrange it to keep the fill behind (I should have used the unite tool).
That's the succulent vector graphic finished!
