זה שילוב של כמה דברים
דבר ראשון זה צריך להיות משהו שאשכרה מעניין אותי, אני נהנה ממנו ובא לי לצייר. נגיד דרגונבול זי או ג'וג'יטסו קאיזן אלה דברים סופר פופולארים אבל עד היום לא הכנתי להם כלום כי זה לא מעניין אותי מספיק. אם יש משהו שאני כל כך אהבתי שפשוט ישבתי ואמרתי "וואו בא לי לצייר את זה" אז יש סיכוי טוב שהציור הזה גם יהפוך למרצ' כלשהו בהמשך.
נגיד עשיתי סיכות של אודטקסי אפילו שאף אחד לא מדבר על התוכנית הזאת פשוט כי אני ממש אוהב אותה. היא לא מספיק פופולארית כדי למכור הרבה אבל היא לא מקבלת מספיק אהבה לדעתי ורציתי שיהיה משהו בשביל ה-2-3 אנשים שאוהבים אותה.
דבר שני, ככל שמשהו יותר פופולארי ויש סביבו יותר באזז הסיכוי שאני אעשה לו מרצ' יותר גבוה מן הסתם. קייפופ דימון האנטרס למשל היה כל כך פופולארי שהיה קשה להתעלם. בכל זאת אני מנסה להתפרנס מהציורים שלי, ולהדפיס דברים עולה כסף, אז זה הגיוני לשים לב לדברים שיש להם סיכוי למכור יותר טוב או בכמויות יוותר גדולות. כשחברים שלך אוהבים אנימציה ואתה עוקב אחרי הרבה דברים של אנימציה ופאנדומים אונליין די קל לראות סביב מה יש יותר באזז או פחות באזז.
יש גם קלאסיקות שנשארות חזקות למשך שנים. בית הינשוף וגרביטי פולס עדיין מוכרים מלא מרצ' גם שנים אחרי שהן ירדו מהמסך

דבר רביעי - יותר סביר שאעשה מרצ' לדברים של חברות גדולות מאשר לדברים של יוצרים עצמאיים כי אני רוצה שאנשים יתמכו בדבר העצמאי ולא לשים לו רגל, בעוד שלא נראה לי שלחברה הגדולה שעשתה את הסרט המגלגל מיליונים של הקיץ יהיה אכפת אם מישהו בצד השני של העולם מוכר פוסטר שלה. בגלל זה לקח לי הרבה זמן להתחיל לעשות מרצ' של הזבין הוטל למשל, התחלתי אחרי שהסדרה הצליחה מספיק שאני לא הייתי מכשול
כן קצת שברתי את החוק הזה עם הפוסטר של גוויניביר, אני אודה. גם כי ממש ממש רציתי לצייר משהו שקשור לזה ואהבתי את הרעיון, גם כי יש לי אמון שהתוכנית הזאת תצליח בעתיד, וגם כי היה לי ממש ממש חשוב שהמכירות בכנס יהיו טובות השנה.
דבר חמישי - לפעמים אני מצייר משהו מסיבה אחרת. או כי שכרו אותי לצייר אותו, או שציירתי אותו למשחק, או ווטאבר, ואז גם אם הוא לא עונה על הקריטריונים האחרים - כבר יש לי את הציור, אני גם ככה מדפיס מרצ', אז יאללה, למה לא.
בגלל זה נגיד יש לי מרצ' של בנדי או טטלטייל. אלה ציורים ששכרו אותי לעשות.

It's a combination of several things
First of all, it has to be something that I'm really interested in, that I enjoy and that makes me want to draw. Let's say Dragon Ball Z or Jujitsu Kaizen, these are super popular things, but until now I haven't made anything for them because it doesn't interest me enough. If there's something that I liked so much that I just sat down and said "wow, I've gotta to draw that," then there's a good chance that it will also become some kind of merch later on.
For example, I made Oddtaxi pins even though no one talks about that show, simply because I really love it, and I feel like it doesn't get enough love in the merch department. It's not popular enough to sell well but I still wanted to have it there.
Secondly, the more popular something is and the more buzz there is around it, the higher the chance that I'll probably make merch for it. K-pop Demon Hunters, for example, was so popular that it was hard to ignore. After all, I'm trying to make a living from my drawings, and printing things costs money, so it makes sense to pay attention to things that have a chance of selling better or being sold in large quantities. When your friends love animation and you follow a lot of animation stuff, art communities and fandoms online, it's pretty easy to see what's getting more or less buzz.
There are also classics that stay strong for years. Owl House and Gravity Falls still sell a lot of merch years after they left the screen
Third thing: it's not enough for something to be popular, it has to be something that people want merch for. At the time, I made about 40 PUBG pins because of how popular the game was, and today, years later, I still have most of them. People connect more to cartoons with strong characters that you can emotionally relate to.
Fourth thing - I'm more likely to do merch for things from big companies than things from independent creators because I want people to support the independent thing and not trip them up.
I don't think the big company that made the summer's multi-million dollar hit would care if someone on the other side of the world sells its poster.
As a small indie creator I would be annoyed if someone was selling merch for my stuff in another booth (although flattered, let's be real) since the people buying it would then not buy my own merch, but if i had an award winning best seller? Please, fanart away.
That's why it took me a long time to start doing a merch for Hazbin Hotel, for example. I started after the series was successful enough that I felt like I wouldn't get in it's way.
Yes, I broke that rule a little with the Guinevere poster, I'll admit. Guinevere is still an indie show that relies on merch sales, I did feel bad about that and I encourage everyone to go support it. I did it partly because I really really wanted to draw something related to it and I liked the idea I had for a drawing, partly because I have faith that this show will be successful in the future, and partly because it was really, really important to me that the sales at the convention would be good this year (it's been a rough year for conventions around here) and this was one of the only things I liked that had any buzz at the time..
Fifth thing - sometimes I draw something for another reason. Either because I was hired to draw it, or I drew it for a game, or Whatever, and then even if it doesn't meet the other criteria - I already have the drawing, I'm printing merch anyway, so, y'know, why not.
That's why I have a merch for Bendy or Tattletale, for example. These are drawings that I was commissioned to do.
But obviously if you're hired to do a drawing, you have to ask permission before you turn it into merch.
