In 1966 British artist Tom Phillips set himself a task: to find a second-hand book for threepence and alter every page by painting, collage and cut-up techniques thereby creating an entirely new version. He titled his altered book A Humument. The first version of all 367 treated pages was published in 1973 since when it has been continuously revised. The Humument App has just been developed by Tom Phillips, it combines the most recent 367 full-colour pages with an entirely novel interactive feature, The Oracle. Original Humument Pages at Shandy Hall

Until the 26th June at Shandy Hall, Coxwold, Yorkshire, you can see the original artwork for the fifty final pages of A Humument which complete this fifty year project. Contest: Design a Humument Page

Venus Febriculosa - a website concerned with contemporary literature and the art and design of books - has set DESIGN CONTEST 10: A Humument, and we encourage all our readers to take part. The brief is simple. You are invited to create an original visual and/or poetic work using any media or methods using Page 4 of A Human Document as the prima materia for this work. Illuminated Tweets, an exhibition that explores A Humument through new media, opens today at the Saison Poetry Library as part of the Southbank Centre's Web We Want Festival. The show, which features apps, tweets and digital recordings, offers a rare chance to see original artwork of the most recent treated Humument pages in progress. Tom Phillips will be reading new work from A Humument on Tuesday 16th September 2014 from 7.30pm onwards at the Saison Poetry Library The event is free but booking is required, please email [email protected]

Few artists can claim to have committed to a work in progress for 47 years. As A Humument nears its half century an exhibition, Life's Work, at MASS MoCA features an in depth study of Tom Phillips’ ever evolving treated novel and partners the Humument display with another longstanding altered book project by Johnny Carrera. Life's Work is the most comprehensive exhibition of A Humument ever mounted and offers a rare opportunity to examine the work in its entirety.
