Phanuel — also known as Orphiel — is the first angel who is not represented in art with a human form, but is rather shown in the standard Throne image of a fiery wheel covered in eyes. Yep. Not cuddly at all. And should he be? No. After all, angels are spiritual beings. They do not possess a body, and their choice to take on human form when they interact with human beings is rather for our benefit than for anything else. They are big, scary, powerful beings of light and fire, so they try to tone it down a bit when interacting with us humans. (Not that they don’t still scare the pants off of people. There’s never been an angel in the bible who did not have to preface his message with “Do not be afraid.” But at least they make the effort.) So the fact that there is no humanoid version of this angel to be found should tell you something: he doesn’t interact with the earth much. Phanuel is the chief of the Thrones, which means that his main job (traditionally speaking) is relaying the messages from the First Sphere of Heaven down to the lower spheres. Little is said about Phanuel in the Catholic tradition, other than the fact that Pope Saint Gregory I listed him among the Seven Archangels, which raises some curious hierarchy questions in the foundation of the choir of archangels. In the Jewish tradition, he is known as the Angel of Exorcism, and is invoked in cases of demonic possession. While the Christian tradition does not retain this, he is instead given the title Angel of Repentance, and is said to be the guardian of those who seek to turn away from evil and do good.
