Returning home on a train with epiphanies that don’t match up to anything realistic. Kill me.
Does this mean we can go drinking?
“Women invented all the core technologies that made civilization possible. This isn’t some feminist myth; it’s what modern anthropologists believe. Women are thought to have invented pottery, basketmaking, weaving, textiles, horticulture, and agriculture. That’s right: without women’s inventions, we wouldn’t be able to carry things or store things or tie things up or go fishing or hunt with nets or haft a blade or wear clothes or grow our food or live in permanent settlements. Suck on that. Women have continued to be involved in the creation and advancement of civilization throughout history, whether you know it or not. Pick anything—a technology, a science, an art form, a school of thought—and start digging into the background. You’ll find women there, I guarantee, making critical contributions and often inventing the damn shit in the first place. Women have made those contributions in spite of astonishing hurdles. Hurdles like not being allowed to go to school. Hurdles like not being allowed to work in an office with men, or join a professional society, or walk on the street, or own property. Example: look up Lise Meitner some time. When she was born in 1878 it was illegal in Austria for girls to attend school past the age of 13. Once the laws finally eased up and she could go to university, she wasn’t allowed to study with the men. Then she got a research post but wasn’t allowed to use the lab on account of girl cooties. Her whole life was like this, but she still managed to discover nuclear fucking fission. Then the Nobel committee gave the prize to her junior male colleague and ignored her existence completely. Men in all patriarchal civilizations, including ours, have worked to downplay or deny women’s creative contributions. That’s because patriarchy is founded on the belief that women are breeding stock and men are the only people who can think. The easiest way for men to erase women’s contributions is to simply ignore that they happened. Because when you ignore something, it gets forgotten. People in the next generation don’t hear about it, and so they grow up thinking that no women have ever done anything. And then when women in their generation do stuff, they think “it’s a fluke, never happened before in the history of the world, ignore it.” And so they ignore it, and it gets forgotten. And on and on and on. The New York Times article is a perfect illustration of this principle in action. Finally, and this is important: even those women who weren’t inventors and intellectuals, even those women who really did spend all their lives doing stereotypical “women’s work”—they also built this world. The mundane labor of life is what makes everything else possible. Before you can have scientists and engineers and artists, you have to have a whole bunch of people (and it’s usually women) to hold down the basics: to grow and harvest and cook the food, to provide clothes and shelter, to fetch the firewood and the water, to nurture and nurse, to tend and teach. Every single scrap of civilized inventing and dreaming and thinking rides on top of that foundation. Never forget that.”

from a post by Reclusive Leftist on women’s erasure in history.
her comments relate specifically to an article by the NYT thanking “the men” who invented modern technology, but pick absolutely any academic field of study, and women’s contributions are minimized, if not outright ignored.
literature has been a huge part of my life for a long time, and i grew up reading the classics—which, of course, are typically books written by white men, depicting their experiences. i was taught that the first “modern novel” was Don Quixote, written in the early 1600s by a guy (Cervantes). i don’t think i know of a word to accurately describe my mixture of outrage, shock, and pride, when i discovered later that actually, the first modern novel was written 600 years earlier—by a woman! (it’s The Tale of Genji, written by a Japanese lady-in-waiting who was known as Murasaki Shikibu.)
this might not seem important, but if you’re a woman you know just how vital this knowledge is. even now, when women are being told that we can do anything we set our minds to, the historical, literary, and scientific figures we learn about are all men. it’s a much more insidious way to discourage women from aiming high—because what’s the point in putting in so much hard work if it’s not even going to be remembered after you’re dead?

they’re stealing from us. straight up theft of our history and our value.

FUN FACT: The first computer programmer (and I challenge you to find a more male dominated field than Computer Science) is widely regarded as Ada Lovelace.
snow is falling, all around me children playing, having fun but its the season of January exams, good luck in them, everyone time for learning and revising, people working all night long time for worry and exchanging answers time for hoping your work’s not wrong
i’m gonna do some revision tonight i’m not gonna spend my night underneath my bed covers or crying about life………
students writing, clock is ticking it’s not a sound that I like to hear all I wish is that exams didn’t exist what a shit way to start the year!
That depressing moment when you set your default font to "Cambria Math"
i hate coursework.
Alone again, naturally, in my room submerging my poor stomach in “healthy black pepper popping corn” and hot strawberry Ribena. I feel entirely invisbile today apart from when people are unwittingly tearing me apart with snideful comments. Days like today remind me of why I’ve ended up doing this degree. When everyone else got invited to Stephanie’s 13th ice skating birthday party it was alright because I was reading The Hobbit.
I’m currently close to the twenty loan limit at the university library, heaven help me if there is fire my whole room is a shrine to books.
Hot blackcurrant squash is a drink I have very regularly.
what the fuck is a real man?
A man who is respectable, honourable and selfless. Not the type that hang around on street corners drinking cheap cider, taking drugs and beating up random people for example.
so men who do that aren’t real? i’m interested in this from a kind of empiricism vs rationalism perspective…
Rationally, of course they’re real. They exist. The difference is they may be physically a man, but they act like nothing but thugs. I see no need for insults by the way? Surely you’re mature enough to have a debate without resorting to insults as a child would? (Your tags on the last reblog)
YOU’RE NOT MY REAL MUM!
Trust me, if I were your mother you wouldn’t be so narrow minded. Your whole blog is full of nothing but derogatory insults against men, generalising all men as being sexist assholes with no respect for women. The fact is, that isn’t true. A Hell of a lot of them are, I’ll agree with you there, but not all. I also think however that no matter how a man treats you personally, it will never be good enough for you because you’re only interested in being argumentative and “playing the victim”. You seem not to realise that women can be sexist too, educate yourself a little and realise that sexism can work both ways, and neither is acceptable. Equal rights between men and women is something that has to be achieved. We’ve made huge improvements in the last few decades, but we aren’t fully there yet. Feminism is great, Feminism has achieved a lot on behalf of all women in the last century or so. Radical Feminism in the sense of women dominating men however is not. Nobody should be seen as inferior. Equality is what must be achieved, not sexism. I acknowledge though that you’re far too self-obsessed and ignorant to take on anyone else’s views but your own - your blog shows that. I hope when you grow up you’ll learn to accept that just because an opinion differs to your own, doesn’t make it wrong. Sexism is wrong, yes, but you need to realise it’s wrong from anyone, not just men. I’m going to block you now. Not in a “Ha, I got the last say” way, but purely because I have no interest in associating with cynical, belligerent and generally foolish people such as yourself. Good luck in life, bellend.
wow, that accelerated quickly. well done on the self-control. i understand that you wouldn’t wish to associate with a woman who doesn’t need your ‘gentleman’ shit because it blows your position as the ‘nice guy’ out of the water. we are both feminists, it seems, and aside from this small slip-up (it happens to us all), you appear to be doing pretty well at it. good luck to you too.
you fucking… pooface.
I'd just like to chip in and say that Caroline's mum is very nice.

This post makes me happy. I take it things are going pretty okay then?
No I want to die.
Me and Jessie walked along the seafront at 3am last night moaning about how things would be better if you were here to sort us out. Melodrama.

Ten rape prevention tips! (trigger warning)
Don’t put drugs in other people’s drinks.
When you see a person walking by themself, leave them alone.
If you pull over to help a person whose car has broken down, remember not to rape them.
If you are in an elevator and a person gets in, don’t rape them.
When you encounter a person who is asleep, the safest course of action is to not rape them.
Never creep into a person’s home through an unlocked door or window, or spring out at them from between parked cars, or rape them.
Remember, people go to the laundry room to do their laundry. Do not attempt to molest someone who is alone in a laundry room.
Use the Buddy System! If it is inconvenient for you to stop yourself from raping a person, ask a trusted friend to accompany you at all times.
Carry a rape whistle. If you find that you are about to rape someone, blow the whistle until someone comes to stop you.
Don’t forget: Honesty is the best policy. When asking a person out on a date, don’t pretend that you are interested in them as a person; tell them straight up that you expect to be raping them later. If you don’t communicate your intentions, the person may take it as a sign that you do not plan to rape them.
(From HERE based upon the concept from THIS website)
Yay for sexism!
this week I have to take a programming exam.
the programming exam.
at my school, computer science is an open major, but when you’re on the last 200-level class, you have to take this test to pass the class. it works like this: weeks in advance, we are given four programs (to be written in java), and when you go in to take the test, you have to create one at random in under three hours with no book or internet access.
also it’s strictly pass/fail. and for each time you have to retake it, you get a third of the points knocked off (if you pass).
it wouldn’t be so bad, except java is a fairly new language to me, so on occasion i need to look something up. i have already successfully implemented solutions to all four problems. each one took me roughly six to eight hours including testing and debugging. (they expect you to implement them before — otherwise it would be nearly impossible to pass.) im not nervous about the time limit, im just really terrified that im going to completely forget how to do something syntactically and fail and not pass this class and not be able to continue with my major.
i don’t think it’s possible to go through and memorize every line of code because there are literally hundreds and im just a little stumped on how to go about studying for this exam. also my apartment is doing a cleaning check this week and i have a programming lab due and im super behind on my online classes!!!!! stREEEESSSSSS!!!!!!
Not gunna lie, that sounds like a fucking stupid test. At the very least you should be allowed the standard documentation for the language. Because when the hell is any employer going to ask you to produce something for a client with no reference material?

For your navigation menu, add the padding to the <a> tags rather than the <li>, so that the clickable area fills the whole button. Apply the background and hover affects there too. I always forget to do this, but it does improve usability.
Check out some HTML5 tags for the different sections of the page (<header> <nav> <article> <footer> <aside> etc. rather than <div id="footer">).
I like the colours and layout.

This post makes me happy.
After nearly two weeks of hibernating in my bedroom I’ve been contemplating getting out of my rural village and seeing some “real life friends”. But then I remembered every time I try to do that my anxiety sparks up and reminds me of all of the reasons why I need to stay inside my comfort zone. Sigh.
At the very least I think you should reply to my texts. It's kinda nice knowing you're still alive.
