my heart genuinely broke time and time again for ronan in this book. him unquestioningly following bryde because he's severely lacking this sense of comradery from every other avenue in his life just. hurt my heart to read.

i was expecting bryde to be this kind of master manipulator/gaslighter who turns ronan against the people who care abt him, but my god it was so much worse to realize that ronan created bryde. that he curated a whole person and scenario in order to feel that "you and me against the world" feeling. to just feel like someone was in his corner. watching him actively push the people who care abt him away as an act of like. selfless martyrdom ("save them from myself" mentality) absolutely destroyed me.

and the bryde dreamthing reveal recontextualizes so much, too (very a la declan knew ronan was a dreamer the whole time). bryde's distrust of the people in ronan's life being ronan's own paranoia just hammers home this unequivocal feeling of complete loneliness that is so fucking sad. i genuinely think ronan reconciles bryde's wants with the fact that he really thinks he's doing the right thing, but then again, bryde's desires and motivations being, in essence, just a manifestation of ronan's detestation of his life and his deepest, most shameful desire (that he won't even admit to himself) for escapism and a new life that isn't so uniquely and irrevocably lonely is absolutely devastating.
