adam parrish we still talk about you
Not even three chapters in and already in love with Ronan
back to adam parrish it is literally so fun how everyone was in mythic fantasy quest story except for adam who was in a horror novel. ghosts and long term possession and gore and more possession but brief this time. more gore
gansey: many thanks and blessings to all who accompanied us on this fantastical journey. while it took uncanny twists and tangled turns, we have arrived on the other side with cherished knowledge and a breadth for adventure. i, of course, unceremoniously died on the side of the highway for a second there, but nevertheless i live on these pages and out. safe travels as you embark upon another chronicle!
adam, drenched in gore and dripping blood on the epilogue: i changed the ending of the book by the way. but just in your copy. bye
adam parrish's three jobs
A semi-comprehensive compilation of canon information about adam's part-time jobs:
Adam held down three jobs, the most important of which was at the trailer factory just outside Henrietta.
At eight P.M., Gansey called Adam at the trailer factory.
"You didn’t tell me you were making [...] eighteen thousand, four hundred and twenty-three dollars a year!”
And then there were the three part-time jobs that paid his Aglionby tuition. He crammed in the work hours now to afford a more leisurely fall when school started. He’d spent just two hours at the easiest of the jobs — Boyd’s Body & Paint, LLC, replacing brake pads and changing oil and finding what was making that squeaking noise...
The first day was the easiest, of course. Before it had really all begun [...] Before Adam’s night job and studying until three A.M. conspired to destroy him.
Adam was alone in the shop. In the still-rainy evening [...] Boyd had set him on the task of [...] closing up shop. Dinner, he said, was for old men like him. [...] Adam retorted, “What’s it you see me doing right now? [...] I’m at work. Two hours from now, I’m going to my next job for another four hours."
Adam squinted against the colourless new dawn [...] it felt like only minutes had passed since he’d emerged from his night shift at the factory.
Adam Parrish was working. He had a late shift at the warehouse that night, unloading mason jars and cheap electronics and puzzles.
so if we're taking the books by word (which, I mean, we kind of have to, although I can make the argument that they're often inconsistent), it seems like adam works these three jobs:
a job at a trailer factory at nights, implied to be (at least sometimes) eight p.m. to midnight. this one earns him the most money (=the most important). going by estimations of hourly wages for manufacturing night shifts in virginia circa-2011, this would be 14$-18$ per hour.
a job as a mechanic at boyd's, where he seems to work non-regular shifts, but at least occasionally in the evenings, likely around four p.m. to eight p.m.; going by estimations of hourly wages for working as a mechanic (without much experience) in virginia circa-2011, this would be 9$-11$ per hour.
and a job at a warehouse, which reads as separate to the factory job because of the items mentioned. it's only mentioned once, so it's hard to determine if it's only at nights, but it definitely isn't every night. if he worked exclusively nights, the hourly wage estimation would be 10$-13$ per hour.
robert claims adam made 18,423 dollars a year. that's 353$ a week on average. we can deduce that he made more money during summer break than he did during the school year, so let's assume he made around 300$ a week during the year.
that would mean his schedule went something like this:
3 weekly night shifts at the trailer factory
1-2 weekly shifts at boyd's
1 night shift at the warehouse
(on top of, you know. literally everything else he had going on.)
Maggie Stiefvater, excerpt from the deleted scenes of The Raven Cycle
you think ronan has done coke
sometimes i randomly remember how insane maggie stiefvater was for making ronan lynch—a man that can create reality—a man of god, when he himself is a god of a man. then to take this man and have him be not only in love with, but a literal soulmate of a man named adam. parrish. adam parrish. who, mind you, lives above ronan's very own place of worship. and is the namesake of the first of mankind that the bible says god made from the literal dust of the ground (adam parrish: comes from nothing, hair "dusty" in color) and appoints him to care for the garden of eden (adam parrish: sacrifices himself to ronan's sentient forest). then has adam viewing ronan as a god and ronan saying "maybe he dreamt (created)" adam???? like who just fucking writes that and goes about their life?
obsessed with the fact that rather than mstief taking some usamerican washed out response to the troubles its literally all the violence of american capitalism in the end that draws niall and then declan in to violence. it’s all about selling dreams, making dreams into profit, making your family’s legacy into profit, getting rich or dying trying. it’s about Mór walking away to join Boudicca, its about niall getting struck down by a tire iron because he put his own son up as the incredible product up for sale, it’s about how declan was born working class in ireland and grows up as a rich american who pulls a gun on the hitman that comes to collect. it’s about how money won’t save you, in the end, - they’ll be some situation where you never have enough. declan doesn’t have enough to buy the sweetmetals to keep jordan and matthew awake, and then he walks down a hallway guns blazing and dies for it as well
obsessed with Niall and Mór’s introduction highlighting the fact they can’t straight up dream money. they can’t dream money. and how the entire plot spirals off that. how will you get rich off this talent you were born with if you can’t make money? How Mór is called with more, more more. How Niall kills his dream cattle to pay for his mother’s ticket home. the opening pages talk about how its a good thing for dreamers to keep their heads down. someone might want to exploit them for profit.
i’ve seen people chatting about how kind of disappointing it is that when we finally meet Mór she ISN’T the bad bitch honcho of the entire function of boudicca. (which, to be fair, canon never suggested- she’s just kinda walking round the fairy market in CDTH). she’s just some woman who works for boudicca, who clearly is involved in their mob brutality but really doesn’t have the power or the money in the end when it matters, when even SHE can’t afford a sweetmetal to keep the new fenian awake. she has to steal the sweetmetal to get it. and she has to kill her son. in the end, she’s just some middle manager, and even she can’t master the mob, or capitalism, or violence.
(let’s talk meta in terms of Stuff I Wished Was Explored in the Third Act, but not only has declan now successfully faked his death, i suspect it’s very necessary for him to do so because he has let so fucking many boudicca prisoners go. and speaking of that, how IMPORTANT it is that declan’s incredibly violent run of victory includes him breaking the bonds of boudicca’s power and setting all these prisoners, these women whom for the most part he doesn’t know at all, free! it’s his heroic apex! it’s great! it’s absolutely to me where the irish mythological hero parts come through, because he’s the one with the unbreakable, almost mythic feeling riastrad, in the end, unleashing the hounds of ulster from the water bottle onto the mob. but also now he’s definitely very dead. also Mór is the one to shoot him. we love epic and messy family drama)
The hunt for money will lead to you putting your son on the altar as the source of your wealth, And it will make your son into a killer who waits with a gun in his hands, and it will lead to you being knocked Down with a tire iron, and it will lead to you shooting your son. Greed will hand violence down the line and you will pay for this wealth in blood
god bless adam parrish. he's my baby boy. he's an absolute cunt. he's cold and calculating. he is angelic and dusty. he wants anything but to become the hard violence of his father. he refuses to embrace his own softness. he is miserable. he is filled with joy. he is elegantly somber. his grin is elastic and amiable. he is cruel and has killed a man. he sobbed to his sleeping lover and brought him his pet bird as an apology. he is two-faced. he can't hide who he really is no matter how hard he tries because the hiding eats away at him from the inside. he loves his soulmate so innately that they connected on a spiritual plane beyond normal human comprehension. he can see the ether. he is making love to a god. he lets a boy hold his hand. he transferred three times. he is touch-starved and hungry for his lover all of the time. he is peculiarly polite. he is bossy as hell. he never got to take ronan's clothes off that one time. what does his voice sound like when he erased the appalachia from it--empty? blank? can he erase his origins from himself, or will the mountains always cling to him? he tried to break up with his lover while said lover was in a coma but it made him hate himself so bad that he decided to risk his life for him instead. he wants a bigger, showier wedding someday. the federal government fears him. he loves his man no matter how long he tried not to love him. he will love him forever without hesitation. he is an impeccable dresser. he shows up in your dreams. he keeps on making the same mistakes but he will never make those mistakes ever again. or won't he? adam parrish. bitch. magician. god. boy. bless his heart.
ofc this guy was born on all saints' day wdym
