I'll probably draw more That Hideous Strength art later on because one simply *cannot* pass up the Merlin nonsense, but for now, it's crucial that everyone knows that this has become a Dick Devine fanblog
Perelandra is a weird weird book <3
Out of the Silent Planet is a incredible book and y'all need to get on this
Hi! Could i use your Eleanor Vance art as my avi? Thanks!
Yeah for sure!! Do it!
Hi! I googled anomalocaris cross stitch because my gf loves anomalocaris and I wanted to make something for her and I found your post from like 4 years ago with an anomalocaris pattern. Would it be ok if I used that to make a gift for her? I don't wanna just copy your art without asking!
yes!! please do! people cross stitching that anomalocaris would make me very happy! (and you can share pictures of it with me if you do but you don't have to!)
its official: tumblr is selling our data to Midjourney
Internal documents obtained by 404 Media show that Tumblr staff compiled users' data as part of a deal with Midjourney and OpenAI.
we'd been hearing rumors about this for a bit but now its open and out there. some details from this article
it goes without saying, but if @staff goes through with this its going to be an utter shitshow and im all but certain the website will not survive it.
everyone go enable this immediately. it can be a bit hard to find because “visibility” is under blog settings instead of general settings or privacy. you have to do this individually for each separate side-blog
if you can’t find it on the app then the update probably hasn’t rolled out to you, and you’ll have to go through the web browser. what a truly wild way/time to implement this
The Rose of Versailles makes the argument that women’s lives and the romance genre can be radical and revolutionary—and, in fact, they were
Whoops, realized I forgot to post it! But here's the Rose of Versailles article
By including New Heloise in the manga, Ikeda is making the claim that romance stories have both personal and political power. She argues that romance novels are read by and deeply move people of all social classes, political inclinations, and genders. Romance novels can start radical conversations and can tell oppressed people they are worthy of love and respect regardless of their social status. If serious revolutionary philosophers like Rousseau wrote romance novels which helped provide the spark for the French Revolution, then shouldn’t we also take shoujo manga seriously as a form of political criticism as well?
Hey I wrote a piece about the Rose of Versailles and women in historical fiction! If anyone wants to read a buncha words of me simping for Riyoko Ikeda....
An ancient man...like 1500s...don’t you want to go away with me?
God! God! Whose hand was I holding?
String on his finger, a tourniquet ring / Venetian blind man, memory loaded on springs
i’m not joking about how much i love webcomics btw. this is why stuff like webtoon feels so hostile to human life. webcomics are supposed to be for like, sporadically updated comics made by hobbyists about their unpublishable YA premises, or shockingly competent polished graphic novels that have nevertheless been running for 100 years and make no fucking sense, like, niche, labor of love projects hosted on vaguely pre-web2.0 sites and available to read completely for free. this is the best kind of media that exists
everyone reblogging this post with tags acting like old school webcomics don’t exist anymore is making me sad… this isn’t a complaining post this is a joyful post… you really can still go read a bunch of random people’s unique creator owned works on their own sites! i’m not even going to give you any recs, just start here and go with whatever looks interesting !! i love you! i love independent comics!
Some people mentioned this in the replies, but Hiveworks is also a web publisher. They have a selection process that considers, among other things, art quality/polish, comic subject matter, and ability to maintain a consistent update schedule. They do publish a lot of awesome comics, but if that’s your only source, you’re missing out on a wider range of work from other creators for whom that might not be a good fit for whatever reason. Here’s an incomplete list of some other places you can find independent webcomics: Piperka - Combination webcomic index and archival tool. You can subscribe to comics you like and get notified when they update.
Belfry Webcomics Index - Like Piperka (but without the archive, I think).
The Webcomics Library - Has a very thoroughly tagged collection of online comics to search through.
TopWebComics - Some of the comics on this website have NSFW banners and ads, so proceed at your own discretion. It hosts links to a huge swath of comics, ranked by daily votes, and is a lot of fun to scroll through.
r/Comics, r/Webcomics - People frequently post pages from their ongoing long-form webcomics on these forums. They don’t tend to get the same level of engagement as one-off joke comics - you’re more likely to find them sorting by ‘new’ and checking in the morning a couple days a week.
r/Comic_Crits - People frequently post links to or sections of their own comics looking for constructive feedback. If you want to indulge your inner reviewer, this is a nice place for both doing that and finding new work to check out.
Webrings/Link Pages - Look out for ‘Friends’, ‘Other links’, ‘Comics I Love’, etc. Also, consider adding one of these to your blog, comic, or other page, with comics YOU love! Link is to my link page, if you want an example.
Short rant about webcomic publishing and promotion under the cut:
