Today my Great-Uncle Walker died. He was my grandma’s brother. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In 2008 I took this picture of him. I knew exactly what I wanted. I told him to get “fresh” for our photoshoot. He put on his favorite sneakers, his chains, rings, earring, a dope t-shirt, his leather jacket and his blue tooth headset on his ear. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I knew I wanted to take the picture in front of Brother’s and Sun Pizza on Washington street in Dorchester at night. I was doing my homework for photography school and wanted to use a slow shutter speed and capture the cars going by and make them look like a blur in the background. So we walked outta Grandma’s house on Castlegate Road and walked to the corner. I took out my camera and set up my flash. I took pictures and we talked. 30 mins later I got my picture, it was perfect. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I captured the blur of cars going by, people crossing the street and you can even see people ordering pizza at the counter inside the pizza shop. This picture felt like home. It carried the energy of my childhood. It reminded me of running to the store with 50 cents and getting a teenie juice, bag of chips and some candy. It reminded me of crossing the street to buy a slice of pizza when I was suppose to be playing in the “back yard”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So today, I’ma say, I love you Uncle Walker. You taught me how to make sweet potato pie and the best bad words to say if someone was picking on me. Thank you for helping me do my homework when I was in photography school and for always letting me take pictures of you. Rest In Peace. I know you’re already partying in heaven so please tell everyone I said hi. We love you Unc. ❤️ (at Dorchester, Boston) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPWQv20hfPG/?utm_medium=tumblr
