July 2026: 650 mile from Spain & through western France
Draft With this trip in 2026 ride I completed 14 long-distance cycle rides in Europe starting in 2014. Two of these have included Spain, but the rest have been in France. The new feature if this trip in 2026 is a cycling from Spain through France back to England. In 2025, I completed two long-distance bike rides, one from the south of France to Dieppe, and the other from Roscoff to Dieppe. The…
Cycle UK Magazine publish article on my 1,000 mile bike ride through France in 2025!
My daily web diary records my 1,000 miles, from the Mediterranean coast of southern France all the way to Dieppe. I set out to raise funds for Ukrainian causes which I am doing again this year, 2026 in a cycle ride from Spain, through France to England. Please CLICK HERE to DONATE to my 2026 charity fund However the ride was also about the sheer joy of cycling through beautiful landscapes and…
Rising fertiliser prices, driven by conflict in the Middle East and volatile gas markets, are exposing a major weakness in UK farming. Nitrogen fertilisers—vital for crop yields—depend heavily on natural gas, with the UK importing around 60% of its supply. We should be using fertilisers developed in our own country from sustainable sources. Also we need to change farming methods to avoid the intensive use of artificial fertilisers.
2026 - Long distance cycle ride from Spain ( Bilbao) to England
This is the first draft of the proposed route. This blog will updated with detailed route information. The route proposed is 709 miles. The plan is to allow for sightseeing and some deviations from the route, consequently I’ve estimated only 35 miles per day. the number of days will be 20. The journey begins! My ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao arrives about 8:00 a.m. so I will be able to…
Brother George's Cycling Poem
This is the first of George Ient’s poems from his little book of poems written many years ago. I hope you enjoy it, I certainly do as it speaks of endeavour, a bright future and of course the freedom of cycling! George and John in Australia c1943 Unabridged my brother George and John
The journey down to the south of France with my bicycle by train and via the Newhaven Dieppe ferry was remarkably easy. The total journey time was about 48 hours with two stopovers, - one in Paris and one on the night train south. An enjoyable trip!
The Future of energy at home: Solar Power - free energy from the roof + Home Batteries - storing the sunshine + Air Source Heat Pump - heating without gas + Financial/Environmental benefits
Summer Newsletter
What a summer it has been! From cycling adventures across beautiful mountainous landscapes and coastal routes to a memorable trip to Porto with my sons, Adrian and James, the season has been full of highlights. Carol and I enjoyed a lovely getaway to La Rochelle. In the spring we had a wonderful visit to Annecy and the French Alps, where we spent time with our daughter and her family—and I even…
Methane being flared off
If there’s a reason to move away from fossil fuel fuels this is one of them. Renewable energy must be deployed even faster rate to avoid greenhouse gases such as methane and CO2 to polluting and heating atmosphere even further. Planet temperature rise, driven by greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels, reached a record high in 2024, exceeding 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for the…
Trump wins - the environment lost
The outcome of the US election is a tragedy for those suffering from floods and drought around the world. It will have disastrous consequences for the natural environment and efforts to stem the relentless rise in global warming sea and land temperatures.
The outcome of the US election is a tragedy for those suffering from floods and drought around the world. It will have disastrous consequences for the natural environment and efforts to stem the relentless rise in global warming sea and land temperatures. Investors in oil and gas and the companies that produce these commodities will probably be leaping for joy right now with Trump’s unassailable…
How does CO2 cause global warming?
How does carbon dioxide (CO2) trap heat in our atmosphere? Ever since the discovery of fossil fuels the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has been rapidly increasing.
Or: How does carbon dioxide (CO2) trap heat in our atmosphere? Where does CO2 come from? Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a natural gas that occurs in the Earth’s atmosphere, but ever since the discovery of fossil fuels the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has been rapidly increasing. The primary sources of CO2 emissions are: Power generation industry (gas & oil power stations) + fossil fuel…

UK Conservative Government: lack of action on harmful pesticides
The UK General Election is an opportunity to vote for a party that cares for our environment! The Conservative government was due to publish the National Action Plan on the Sustainable Use of Pesticides (NAP) in 2018, which would have laid out targets and plans for pesticide reduction and monitoring. But six years later, it has still not materialised. No only do we have dilly dallying on this…

Reducing global warming emissions from your home!
Households account for approximately 26% of Greenhouse gas emissions. What can be done about this? Getting rid of gas and installing solar panels, air source heat pumps and a battery system ensure ZERO CO2 emissions!
A report by Victor S Ient April 2024 According to The Office of National Statistics (ONS) report of 2022, households account for approximately 26% of Greenhouse gas emissions.
