Since I've been opening up a little bit about npd on here, I want to give a shout out to the essay Narcissus and the Daffodils - I highly recommend reading it if you want to learn more about npd from the perspective of, like, what's actually going on in pwnpd's heads
I think the "pre" and "post" parts in "preposterous" should cancel each other out but everyone else seems to find my idea completely erous
Please don't forget about loveless people this pride month. Love doesn't make us human. People don't need to love in "other" ways to be valid. Some people are aplatonic, some afamilial, some asensual, some are heartless. They still belong. Abolish conformity and the idea that someone needs to be something specific to belong at pride.

The most interesting question you can ask about any character is not what do they want. it's what do they believe they deserve. because those two things are almost never the same and the gap between them is where your entire story lives. a person can want love completely and believe they don't deserve it and that belief will destroy every good thing that comes toward them in ways they won't even notice they're doing. write the gap. the gap is the character.
I had a question about how Dioscorea elephantipes grows, and I love this guy so much I figured I’d talk about it a bit!
So basically, this plant has a woody swelling at the base that expands via the cracks you see forming on it. It’s kind of like being able to watch a tree grow rings (except that there’s a ring for every time the plant wakes up and grows, which can be multiple times per year). The photo on the left is from a couple months after I was gifted this plant as a seedling in 2021. The part that photosynthesizes is a vine that pops out of the top when the plant is actively growing. Right now mine is dormant, so there’s no vine and it kind of looks like a wooden baseball.
Also, it’s in the yam family. That’s right. This is a yam.

it’s so magical and beautiful that there are sprawling interconnected cave systems carved deep into the earth by various geological forces and you don’t have to go in them. there are miles and miles of stone passageways in total darkness that require you to exhale all the air out of your lungs to squeeze through parts of them and you don’t have to be there. some of these squeezes are underwater and require cave divers to take off their oxygen tanks and push them through ahead of them and me i am above ground looking at the sky as we speak. there are untold subterranean wonders no human has ever seen and i will not be the one to discover them #grateful #blessed

It'd be fun if the Doctor's pointless tinkering with the TARDIS was almost purely a social thing. It's not like they often fix anything. Like pets and pats, like French braids at a sleepover, it serves no tangible purpose. It's social grooming. Have you seen the Doctor tinkering beneath the console, or simply sitting there? Their ass is not fixing shit! Flipping all those switches isn't necessary either. It's their secret handshake, I'd wager. Look at how their piloting grows more complex with time, until it becomes an elaborate dance. All it says is ‘Look at you and me, together. No one knows you like I do. I will always be there for you, our hearts entwined.’

The Doctor and the Master + favourite moments [17/?]
Gomez!Master and Twelve — “I had a friend once. We ran together when I was little, and I thought we were the same. But when we grew up, we weren’t.”
My very favorite observation I have ever heard anyone make about this episode: holy shit, this is so definitely a plan geared towards the last version of the Doctor the Master had met–because it would have worked SO WELL on Ten. SO WELL. Barely-controlled desire to conquer the universe? Check. Expressed through insistence on smiting bad guys and being the savior of the lesser beings? CHECK. Needs the gun held to his (or his favorite planet’s) head so he can tell himself he really had no choice? FUCKING CHECK. She would’ve had Ten hook, line, and sinker.
I think one of the most tragic parts of regeneration must be, at least for the Doctor, having to comfort other people about your own death.
like you just went through a terribly traumatic event, felt every cell in your body die, lost your internal sense of self to the point you don’t even know your favourite foods anymore or what clothes you like to wear. and before you can even decide whether you will grow to like this new you, this you that you didn’t even properly choose to become, you have to prove to others that you’re still worthwhile.
you have to explain your traumatic death to people who don’t know, because they’ll never experience this and they know nothing of your culture, and beg your closest friends not to be angry. not to abandon you. you have to let them mourn the dead you while you’re still learning how to find joy in the new you. you have to assure them you’re still the same person they loved in the same few days where your name is only just on the tip of your tongue and all of your memories have different faces than your own.
your death didn’t happen to you, it happened to them, so there is no time to be insecure or decompress. you have to be the most You you’ve ever been, or they’ll leave. they always leave in the end, but you need them now more than ever, and if you aren’t You Enough, if they can’t move on from the old you, they’ll leave the new you all alone.
Sometimes they won’t even stick around that long. The mere idea of a new you will be too much, so you’ll have to pretend that you’d rather start your new life alone anyways.
When twelve said they prefer to die with their own kind so they aren’t buried too early, I can’t help but think it’s easier for smaller deaths too. You die with your own people because they know what it feels like, and they know it’s not about them.
An episode where the Doctor goes on an adventure but the companion opts to just stay in the TARDIS, and we focus on them exploring the TARDIS's infinite rooms while the doctor chases an elusive species of butterfly or something like that
one story I keep thinking about but will never write is a portal fantasy where the protagonist has to get back to earth before her prescription runs out
of course, needing to get back to earth for such a specific and adult reason isn't really a part of the genre identity and so it would go one of two ways
As a comedy: Protag is already aware that this happens sometimes. Magic leaking into our world is a well established problem on the scale of a sewage leak. The tiny talking fairy she meets when she falls into not-narnia tells her that she's the prophesized hero destined to defeat the dark lord and she's like lol no
More seriously: This version of the story would not be from our chronically ill protags perspective. Instead it would be from that of an honourable fantasy knight who has to choose between helping this odd woman get home within a month or completing their own important prophesied quest
#importantly in neither version of this story does she get to access healing magic in fantasy land that fixes her #being chronically ill requires forward planning and I'd want to contrast between wanting a glorious life #and being scared that your health can't handle it #Or knowing that the admin side of things makes a quest impossible (@roundedloaf)
