You couldn’t find a better burlesque troop to celebrate the silliest day of the year with than Red Herring (http://redherringburlesque.tumblr.com/)and her dancers.
Hosted by Daytona Bitch, this monthly show presents burlesque virgins alongside seasoned pros. Given that the show was on April Fools day the theme was “meta-burlesque”. If you’re wondering what this is, here is a quick lesson.
The prefix “Meta” is used to indicate a concept which is an abstraction from another concept, used to complete or add to the original idea. A little turned around yet? To put this into burlesque terms, this show was about burlesque dancers making fun of burlesque dancers at a burlesque show. The night was full of ripped pantyhose, misplaced costumes, and even a hilarious act which included Dolores sporting toilet paper from her shoe.
The opening act of the show was none other than the talented Kate Mior who performed a hilarious and convincing Cher impersonation. She handed out sparklers and engaged the crowd in the grand finale of her rendition of Turn Back Time. Mior was charming, sexy, and hit every note— an excellent opening to the show.
Trifle Lynn was the first burlesque act of the show, beginning her piece with Baby Elephant Walk before transitioning into What Do We Do With A Drunken Sailor? Throughout her set, Lynn struggled to remove her adorable sailor dress, hopping and tripping about the stage in a charming mess.
Sam Antics is no stranger to the stage—or to playing the jokester. She gave a hilarious performance as she “Rick Rolled” the audience again and again by simply pulling off her costume. Antics danced to Never Gonna Give You Up and wore photos of Rick Astly as pasties as well as underwear, bringing the crowd to roaring laughter.
Our favourite virgin of the night was Dandy Alexander, no stranger to the art but a first timer on stage (although you’d never know it!). He swung his cane with the fluidity and skill of a rhythmic gymnast, all whilst charming the audience with his hippy moves and perfect Ken Doll grin. He ended his performance by spraying glitter and confetti from a shaft in his underwear—a more than memorable debut!
One of the most clever acts of the night was by Lisben who prompted the crowd to think about concepts of beauty and self-esteem. She danced to I Feel Pretty, beginning her set with a moustache and full, bushy, body hair. Before picking up her copy of Cosmo she seemed happy and to indeed “feel pretty”. It was upsetting to watch the transition as she was influenced by the magazine to change her appearance to a more “conventional beauty”. In the end of her set it was uplifting to see her throw down the magazine, rejecting its ridiculous ideals and demonstrating this by not shaving her overgrown pubic hair. A thought provoking and well performed act—Thank you Lisben!
After a tantalizing act by Kitty Litteur, Agatha Frisky took the stage in an entirely transparent ensemble. The two are always a pleasure to watch and this was no exception!
