It’s hard to know just how much she valued her sisterly bond with women due to this one reference of men and the ambiguity of early 21st century slang. Utilizing oral histories of members of ACT UP, as well as rare archival footage, the film depicts the efforts of ACT UP as it battles corporate greed, social indifference, and government neglect.

Hands down, United in Anger: a History of ACT UP is the best documentary I’ve seen of the AIDS crisis. The director, Jim Hubbard, has allowed a free copy of movie to remain available on youtube because “this is the only way many people can see [his] film.” I admire his selflessness and urge fellow fans with financial capacity to support his work! We all benefit from availability of LGBT history.

I am a life-long bookseller and avid reader. I began making these book sculptures when struggling to come up with a gift for my boss, celebrating the ten year anniversary of her bookstore. There was no book I could give her that she hadn’t already discerned, so I decided to take a favorite book of poems and reconfigure it into a tree. Dismantling a book is not done without consciousness. Books are precious items. All the books used in my art have been loved and read, and are chosen because of their particular worth. Taking apart text, line by line, I like to think I am reading these books in a different way. Words take on different meanings when isolated or spun into a physical form. These art pieces are an attempt to read words as objects.

Adviser declines to say if Trump believes Islam is a religion

Sebastian Gorka, a deputy assistant to President Donald Trump, declined on Wednesday to say whether the president believes Islam is a religion and said the new White House will not listen to “so-called terrorism experts” associated with the Obama administration.

In a morning interview, NPR asked Gorka about Trump’s view on Islam because the adviser had previously declined to answer that same question on the radio station. On Wednesday, Gorka again dismissed the line of inquiry.

“This is not a theological seminary. This is the White House, and we’re not going to get into theological debates,” he said. “If the president has a certain attitude to a certain religion that’s something you can ask him, but we’re talking about national security and the totalitarian ideologies that drive the groups that threaten America.”

the significance of trump’s recent statement on the wave of bomb threats targeting jewish community centers (that they may be a false-flag and are possibly coming from inside our own communities) is not lost on most jews but i’d like to reiterate for non-jews who may not know why this isn’t just a stupid or clueless explanation to avoid accountability.

this is something white supremacists and neo-nazis say. it mirrors almost perfectly the lie they’ve been disseminating for centuries: jews are the orchestrators of our own oppression; antisemitism is a jewish scheme. White people get deeply offended hearing black people speak this truth, so maybe hearing Jane Elliot say it will cut through the white fragility: White people’s default setting is racism. Because America’s default setting is racism. That doesn’t mean they cannot unlearn it, but anti-Blackness is so ubiquitous in Western culture that unlearning racism is not something that just magically happens because you think you’re a good person. It’s not something you attain and then forget about. It’s a perishable skill.

Nobody becomes “not racist” by repeatedly declaring “But hey, I’M not racist” on social media. Becoming “not racist” is defined by conscious choice, coupled with actions—like listening to black people, calling out racism, and not saying or doing racist things—that prove you aren’t racist. Being “not racist” is something that needs to be worked on CONSTANTLY.
