Thinking about Laika and Ryland Grace, the patron saints of one way trips.
Laika was a stray, picked up off the streets of Moscow for a job she never chose. And Grace had no one, not even a dog, which made him an easy target.
To adapt Laika to the capsule, they kept her in smaller and smaller cages until she got used to confinement. And Graceâs autonomy was worn away over months of gradual decay so he didnât even notice he was trapped until it was too late.
Ten days before launch, one of the scientists working on the project took Laika home to play with his children. To make her feel loved before she was killed. And ten days before launch, Grace thought he had friends again after so long alone. Until they held him down and forced him to be a tool instead of a person.
Before Laika and Grace were sacrificed, they were systematically dismantled until they laid themselves on the alter and didnât even think to scream until the knife had already swung.

I fear Ryan Gosling has bewitched me, body and soul
Iâm not crying I just found out they had choirs in the project Hail Mary soundtrack to show that Grace was not alone, all of humanity was with him and now my eyes are sweating.
youâve met me at a very spanish time in my life
If I have to hear another dudebro YouTuber video essay talk about how much of a coward Grace is I am going to lose it.
Media literacy is dead and we killed it.
I love project Hail Mary but we are having to suspend some disbelief for this trolley problem right?
Like in what universe is it a good idea to send a guy on an extremely sensitive, single attempt only, suicide mission IN SPACE against his will rather than waiting a few months to send someone who wants to go or give him time to think and train? The risk that he just panics and kills himself is just so high even if he doesnât purposely sabotage the mission. Itâs not a simple âsacrifice one guy, save the worldâ because there is a significant risk you actually âsacrifice one guy, ruin your only chance to save the world.â
In the book this felt more intentional as Stratt had been escalating her actions rapidly and becoming subtly more desperate so it seemed like she might decide to do something extreme even if itâs outcome was not actually a good bet. She gets much angrier with Grace for refusing in a way that comes across as a loss of control more so than a totally measured decision. The movie is much more sympathetic to her in tone but I think itâs a bit less effective in terms of justifying the sacrifice. I especially miss the scene where Yao objects to Grace going against his will, without that scene it really feels like a unanimous decision to send him which doesnât make much sense to me.
Anyway I still loved it and the characters are fascinating but I do slightly prefer how the book handles this particular element.

My favorite thing about the Project Hail Mary fandom is that everyone heard the line âyou have no immediate family you donât even have a dogâ and went âgive that man found family!!!!â
Whether itâs a crossover with a bloody YouTuber, giving him a twin or multiple, or making Eridian ocs that love him. Itâs so amazing. You are not alone. You donât need to have the traditional white picket fence to be loved and have meaningful connections.

Listen. Listen. I love Foggy as much as the next person, but can we please stop acting like DD:BA Episode 5 was not the most egregious example of mischaracterization I have ever seen in my entire life, on behalf of both Foggy and Matt?
That conversation about whether or not they should turn in the warrant would never have happened because, legally, anything that was found under that warrant is inadmissible, and both Matt and Foggy, on muliple occasions, have taken advantage of errors like that to benefit their clients, no matter what they have done. Matt would never have argued that they shouldn't turn in the warrant.
Additionally, say that conversation did still happen, if anything, the roles would be reversed. It would have be Foggy arguing against turning it in. Did you all just forget that Matt was the one who wanted to take Frank's case? Mass-murderer, Frank Castle? And that Foggy was staunchly against taking Frank on as a client? Did you forget that Matt was the one who wanted to continue digging in to Karen's case, and Foggy didn't?
Foggy was never Matt's moral compass. Matt was Foggy's. Foggy was Matt's reminder to be more than just a vigilante, to be more than the Devil of Hell's Kitchen. Foggy's sense of right and wrong has always been rooted in what is legally right, whereas Matt's has always, always, been rooted in what is morally right.
I know you miss Foggy. I miss him, too. But let's not pretend that he didn't have some major flaws, including isolating Matt when he exhibited the behavior Foggy wanted to see (i.e. not being Daredevil), and let's stop superimposing those flaws onto Matt. They are both flawed characters, that is what we love about them, so please stop pretending like Foggy was this bastion of moral rightness when he wasn't.
This is a perfect post 20/10. Matt has been badly mischaracterised and underdeveloped this entire season imo.
Just seen the most garbage take about Mel from the pitt on Instagram:
âShe made her neurodivergence understandable to those around her by activating the caregiving circuitry in the brainâ
Is there something in the show I have missed that suggests she purposely infantilises herself to get sympathy from others? Because if not this is a totally wild thing to say about an autistic character. Suggesting someoneâs autistic traits and support needs are performed for personal gain is so gross imo.
Iâm leaving this here so Iâm not tempted to leave it in that persons comment section lol.
Mattâs character isnât making any sense in the new daredevil season. Theyâve just forgotten to reiterate or develop the why for his whole no killing philosophy. Heâs not a lawyer anymore, he doesnât believe in the system, so what does he believe in? What is the plan? If Karen isnât allowed to kill, what the fuck is he doing instead?
The lack of screen time to develop him and Karen this season is infuriating. So so bored of seeing Fisk jr and British-er Wesley so much!
