Stage Two Evaluation

My Stage two experience was eye-opening because the three projects allowed me to see what types of Illustration interest me and what subjects I find more interesting than others. The Words Project helped me decide that I am not too interested in creating my own comics and short stories, but the Overhearing project helped me discover that I like creating characters and their backstories and creating depth into their characters. The Overhearing Project was the project I think was most lacking in research, and more designs into the characters. I think that I should have done more experimentation within this project. For example, when I was beginning to use the phrase ‘Fight Me!’, I had a few more character ideas than just the Knight and the Soldier. For example, a Spy, or a Ninja, etc. But, I did not investigate more characters, and instead just included two characters. But, I did enjoy researching both characters costume and designing a new look for the characters. I think designing the costumes were one of my strengths in this project, as I enjoyed creating them. Another of my strengths were the experimentation of creating ideas for more than one phrase that I overheard. I have learned that I could improve on my research, as well as creating more than one storyline. So, for my Final Project, I am going to improve on my research, and look for more than one solution. The Words Project was the project I think was most lacking in quantity. For the time I was given, I do not believe that I created enough work to reflect that time spent. But, I believe that a strength of mine in the project was experimentation, as I fashioned many different designs for Airships, as well as Parrots. It allowed me to become more confident in my designs and enabled me to make better decisions concerning the final designs. But I believe I could have experimented more with colour in this project. I have learned that I need to become more responsible when it comes to timekeeping while I work, as I spent too much time designing the parrots. So, for my Final Project, I am going to become more precise concerning time-keeping and create enough work to represent the time that I have taken on it. The Collections Project was the Project I enjoyed the most, as it involved creating new creatures, and Space, which I find fascinating. But I was not able to spend the time I wished on it because I was working on creating my Portfolio for interviews to other Universities. A weakness in this project was that more could have been investigated about the Universe, and I could have had more designs for creatures. I would have liked to play with the colours of the creatures more, but I was unable to do so. I really enjoyed the project, and it could have had a deeper meaning if I had enough time to expand. So, for my Final Project, I am going to expand on main points of the Project, and give them more depth.

WOverhearing Project

Final Comic of Sir Hilbert and Major Poldwick. This comic is the Final Piece for the Overhearing Project. Originally, we were sent out to Overhear conversations, and then let it inspire us to create a work. I experimented with a couple of ideas at first, including the phrases ‘She’s out of her mind’, and ‘I’m Broke’, none of which seemed to hold any ground. I then investigated the phrase ‘Fight me’, and this helped inspire me to imagine different scenarios that could be connected to that phrase. I liked the idea of having two or more different people from different eras encounter each other, and how that would pan out. I settled on the knight and the soldier. I had a quick look at how their costumes would have looked and tried to create my own design. I didn’t like the story and dialogue creation, and I found it very difficult. But, I found that I had a lot of fun illustrating that story.

Words Project

Final Character designs for the Illustration project Words. Weapon design inspired by the book The Pirates by Douglas Botting. These final designs, including the design for the parrot and ships, are result of the Words project, where I was originally given seven words, and I needed to choose four words. These four words are Values, Growth, Path and Future. I was then given the task of finding a random book from the library. I came up with the book The Pirates, byb Douglas Botting, where I investigated the olden pirates and their costumes, as well as their different flags and weaponry. I then linked up Pirates, and Future, so I decided to proceed with these two words. I then looked at the artist Kato Steampunk, who is a costume designer for Steampunk. The decision on to what the context would be for me to design a poster for a movie of some kind or a game. I decided on a game. I then looked into mechanical parrots and other animals, where I found that the Parrot was most appropriate. I then discovered the film Treasure Planet, where pirates travel by Airship. This helped me to design a few airships, as well as a few parrots. By then, I had a good idea what the story might be, as well as what characters I wanted to design. By deciding who the characters were and what they did helped me design their costumes. I found that designing the characters and their backstories was a lot of fun.

Collections Project

Final Piece in Collections Project, including creatures of my own design. This Project began from Terry Pratchetts Disc World, which rests on four Elephants, where they all rest on top of the Great A’Tuin, a giant Turtle. I began exploring the ways which sea creatures swim, and if they would swim in the same way in space. By exploring multiple artists, including Noah MacMillan, who created new worlds within each piece, and Maurice Sendack, who Illustrated Where the Wild Things Are. As well as other artists, they helped inspire my new creatures. I also wanted to explore their size, and how the size of the universe could invoke a feeling of being insignificant, but sadly due to a limit on time, I was not able to dig deeper into this subject. Due to the need for me to do my portfolio work, I was not able to work as long on this project as II would have liked to, as I found that this project was really enjoyable.

Reflections

The Previous weeks I was unable to do much work other than do some research into Terry Pratchett and idea development as I needed to work on my portfolio for interviews into other Universities. Including an interview for Kingston University for the Illustration and Animation course, and an online portfolio for Brighton.

Week of the 22nd of January

I like the quick sketches I did at the start which were inspired by the Great A’tuin, which was created by the author Terry Pratchett. I was also interested in the way the Great A’Tuin would have moved throughout the Universe. Would it swim like it was in the ocean? So, I looked at some sea animals and how they moved within the water.

- Do I create a creature for space, or do I use a creature that already exists?

- Project to do with space, but how do I relate? Should I follow Terry Pratchetts’ example, as exploration of the sea and some of its creatures was inspired by the Great A’tuin as part of it is a giant turtle.

- Who is my target audience? It should be for teenagers and young adults.

- Need more research - who? Artists whom have explored more fantastical aspects of the world, or whom creates an entirely new world. Find an artist who plays with the different sizes of objects and changes them. Whale/Marine Life?

- What size should it be? If it is for a gallery, would it be a massive piece, or several small ones?

Week of the 29th of January

I did a few quick sketches of a few other sea animals, I started exploring relevant artists to help me decide how to design my new creatures, including Noah MacMillan. I first quickly sketched four designs and then decided on two of them, then giving the creatures more detail, as well as deciding what colour would be best. I also had a look at different scenes of space, and the decided how to present them. I ended up with three different scenes including both my creatures and a Blue Whale.
