Exclusive Interview with Gemma Correll

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your work? I'm an illustrator and cartoonist. And writer, I guess. I illustrate for editorial, books and advertising and also design products, including the Pugs Not Drugs tote bag!
I have also published five books so far, including A Cat's Life, A Pug's Guide to Dating and A Pug's Guide to Etiquette.
More totes in the press... This month's Computer Arts magazine features one of our fave totes – We Accept Cash by Crispin Finn. Well done guys!!!
We are delighted to have been shortlisted for the Blog&BuySale Christmas Wish List Picks by Kigu. Check it out here!
Ten Quick Questions – Kate McLelland
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your work? I am an illustrator and predominantly work within publishing and for design agencies. I also enjoy making prints and designing stationary for my print label Finch and Robin. I love living in Edinburgh with my husband and 1-year-old boy.
Who or what inspires you? Vintage wooden children's toys, traditional woodblock printing, letterpress, Scandinavian folk design. I love the French toy company Djeco.
Is there anyone you would love to create work for or anyone you would really like to collaborate with? There is a huge list, but here are a few... Djeco, Spring Fling, Anorak Magazine, V&A, Fringe Festival, Nineteen Seventy Three, Chronicle Books and just about every children's book publisher!
If you hadn’t been an illustrator, what do you think you’d be doing? I don't know if this is a good or bad thing, but there isn't anything I would rather do than draw pictures – maybe make toys or design interiors?
What’s the best thing about your job? Getting paid to be creative and make things! I still sometimes can't believe my luck.
What advice would you give to an aspiring illustrator? To take risks. Enter competitions and put your work out there. I imagine there are thousands of beautiful pictures out there that no one will ever see because their creator was worried about negative feedback. Unfortunately working for yourself means you have to take negative feedback and occasional failures. However, it happens to everyone and I just chalk it up to experience and move on.
When you’re not printing away, what do you like to do in your spare time? After Oscar was born I haven't had too much spare time. I do enjoy a trashy science fiction or fantasy novel. I like classic ones too, but in all honesty, I like fairly light, quick-paced books these days. I also love going to the cinema. I enjoy almost every genre of film apart from politics and the law... and anything too real or grim.
We love your gorgeous animal & bird illustrations... what’s your favourite animal and why? Oh, there are so many! When I was younger it was the tiger. I think tigers are beautiful and strong. I also love highland cows and foxes. Actually I might have a soft spot for orange animals. I should say that my favourite animals at Edinburgh Zoo are the Pygmy Hippos. I have loved watching the calf grow over the last two years (it walks under water!!).
Which three items could you not live without? Sketchbook and pencil, my iPhone and Cola. I have tried to live without Cola many, many times and definitely can't.
Any future projects or plans that you can tell us about? I'm working on my first 2 children's book projects – they'll be out next year. One features lots of lovely Scottish animals and the other is all about vehicles. I am also enjoying creating artwork for seed packaging! The eclectic life of an illustrator...
Meet Ronnie & Frank, the newest critters to join the Totes Amazed shop. Created by our talented friends at YOKE, these totes are made from super heavyweight canvas and have been screenprinted in hot pink and bright orange. We've only had them a couple of days but they are selling fast...
@Cath_Kidston Happy 20th Birthday Cath Kidston! We love everything in the special birthday collection, especially this gorgeous tote bag with cross-body and grab handles (£25). It cleverly illustrates the Cath Kidston journey from Holland Park in London 20 years ago to 100 stores around the world in 2013. You can find out all about the birthday collection here.

Book lovers across the UK & Ireland are being encouraged to join BOOKS ARE MY BAG to celebrate all the wonderful bookshops we have on the high street. BOOKS ARE MY BAG is a collaboration between publishers, bookshops, authors & agents. Devised by advertising agency, M&C Saatchi.
Did you know that 56% of all book buying decisions are made by consumers in a bookshop. Also, high street bookshops (both chains & independents) still account for almost 40% of books bought by consumers (by value) (Bowker Research 2013).
BOOKS ARE MY BAG aims to reignite the nation’s love of bookshops, calling on book lovers to show their support by visiting & purchasing a book from their favourite bookshop.
To promote the campaign they have printed & distributed over a quarter of a million tote bags (available until Christmas) at over 1,800 chain & independent bookshops from across the UK & Ireland.
This gives us the perfect excuse to go to our fave Edinburgh bookshop, Analogue Books, to browse & buy (not that we usually need an excuse to go book hunting).

JAMES BROWN INTERVIEW
Image © James Brown generalpattern.net
We were delighted to print an exclusive new tote bag, Unexpected Item, for talented illustrator & printmaker James Brown recently. Not only that, we caught up with James & asked him a few questions about his work.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself & your work? I trained as a textile print designer & worked in the clothing industry for many years. I became an illustrator in 2007 & started making prints as a personal project. I never dreamt that I would make a living selling my prints.
How would you describe your illustration style? I don’t think I can! But, if I had to, I would say ‘simple but effective, (but sometimes not so simple, but hopefully still effective)’.
Who or what inspires you? Everyone & everything.
You've lived & worked in London for a long time – do you think that this influences your work at all? I have lived in London for most of my life & it definitely influences me. There are still areas to explore & it constantly changes. There is so much rich history that inspires & so much to see in the present. London is not unique, all towns have history & life, but London is where I live.
Is there anywhere in the world you would love to visit or work in the future? I love New York. It would be fantastic to have the opportunity to work there sometime. As the song says, '...make it there & you can make it anywhere'.
If you hadn’t been an illustrator, what do you think you’d be doing? I would love to have a shop, selling what I don’t I know. I would stand behind the counter & serve people in a knowledgable & authoritative manner. Friendly, yet serious. Pens in top pocket.
What’s the best thing about your job? I'm my own boss.
When you’re not printing away, what do you like to do in your spare time? Have fun with my family.
What advice would you give to an aspiring illustrator? Be willing, keen & friendly. Try to do as many different types of jobs as possible. Always go above & beyond the call of duty. Have a can do attitude.
Do you think it’s important to have an agent as an illustrator – would you recommend having one to other illustrators starting out? Having an agent works for me – organising timescales, budgets & of course, promoting me & getting me work. I would advise getting one if possible, but also work hard at promoting yourself & secure jobs through your own leg work.
You’ve been commissioned to do work for some fantastic people, including Cath Kidston & the V&A, is there anyone you would love to create work for? Those two commissions were really great to do & it was a real honour to be asked. They came out of the blue, so they were exciting surprises. I like surprises – I am open to offers!
We love your gorgeous animal illustrations & prints – we’re all a bit obsessed with pandas in Edinburgh at the moment. What’s your favourite animal? Other people cats & dogs.
Which three items could you not live without? Love, peace & happiness.
What are you currently working on? An exhibition with friend & fellow printmaker Kate Gibb. It’s at Stour Space in Hackney Wick, London, throughout the month of November.
Any future projects that you’d like to tell us about? I’m working on a new stationary range.
Thanks James!
Our next interview will be Ten Quick Questions with Edinburgh-based illustrator Kate McLelland. Coming soon...
Love this Bad Seed tote!!! Saw someone wandering around Stockbridge in Edinburgh with this tote recently and just had to have it. Sadly, they all seem to have sold out at the Nick Cave shop, so may have to resort to buying a t-shirt instead. Seriously hope they are going to re-stock it.
A new tote to add to our expanding collection thanks to Wagamama. Not only did we get a delicious free lunch, they gave us a tote to take away, too. They must have guessed about our tote obsession...
Lovely Mini Moderns Whitby tote from Totes Amazed featured in Wrap magazine 'Wrap Loves' (Summer edition). Made from sturdy, hard wearing canvas, it's perfect for long days at the beach.
The Scotsman – Weekend Life 25/08/13 Greyfriars Bobby tote 'Pick of the Week'
We LOVE this hungry little character from Noodoll – he's one of our customers' fave totes, too http://tinyurl.com/noodoll-tote
Laura Spring is mad about the weather!
Sadly we don't sell these fantastic totes on Totes Amazed, but they are high on our wishlist. Inspired by the unpredictable British weather, the idea behind this collection is that you can choose your bag, suitcase or wash bag depending on the weather of your destination... If you are quick, you might be able to grab one in the sale on Laura's website http://lauraspring.bigcartel.com
