This is frightening.
This is awesome.
I’m not even kidding, both of those together was my exact reaction to this. How convenient!
Drawing humans [5/?]: Hands
@quadpen @espeon132
Ah yes, hands are notoriously difficult to draw. I’ll do what I can to help!
First off, below is a diagram of how I usually invision the shapes that make up the hand. Proportion-wise, the longest finger is usually just a little bit shorter than the palm (though this can vary from person to person).
Here’s the hand again, in a different position. Sometimes I find it helpful to think of the segments of the finger as box-like shapes, rather than cylinders.
Here’s a breakdown of my usual process while drawing hands:
Honestly, while I know it’s not the answer anyone wants to hear, the things that will help more than anything else are lots of practice and using references. On the plus side, the good thing about hands is that references are easy to find! Besides looking at your own hands for reference (which I definitely recommend), you can also look up images online. The website Pixlovely even has a drawing practice tool specifically for hands.

Well look at that!
More Atsushi Nishigori illustrations from his brand new art book, Telegenic!
This time around is a series of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann illustrations and sketches from various magazines, books, CDs, and DVDs. Much more coming later!
Here’s some Amika animations that you can see in the trailer! There’s a lot more where these came from, but for now enjoy her stance and cat-grenade!

Today’s anatomy practice. Latias the lifesaver and beach vigilante. She is SUPER STRONG! :D
It looks good. I just think people have problems appreciating sprite art of that style anymore.
You mean, of a good style?
Seriously, the only spritework I’d say compares to this (as far as fighting games go) is UNIEL’s.
I doubt people nowadays think of SNK when they think of pixelart, considering the kinds of games that use pixelart lately. Which is a shame since they were one of the best at it.
The problem is that lazy indie devs have made pixelart a dirty word, since they usually just use it as an excuse to make easy, low-resolution crud.
Weren’t the King of Fighters XIII sprites made with a 3D model as a reference, from which they went in and did all the fine-detailed pixel work? I know at the very least they had the 3D data for calculating the lighting effects.
I think so. I found this with a Google search and this guy probably knows more about it than me.
I found the making-of process chart I’d seen ages ago that lays it out, though it was for King of Fighters XII.
Basically, the process is:
draw rough concept
make 3D model of concept
render out frames for reference
draw refined concept from reference
create basic version of the character and animations
go add detail to all the frames
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
