a couple of weeks ago, i ended up sitting across this very American guy at a dinner party. we got on the topic of weather (exciting), and how berlin had a lot of pollen this spring which made it tough for a lot of people.

but, i apparently pronounced pollen incorrectly. i don't remember exactly how i pronounced it, but the American immediately corrected me and asked why i mispronounced it, teasing, although clearly he understood what i meant.

i felt awkward and flustered, as if i would have to justify or defend myself.

why are people like this? especially in a language like English that is so international and so diverse, to be corrected over a minor mispronunciation and then teased moreover feels so unnecessary. perhaps its also worth noting that this was at a dinner for internationals of all different backgrounds.
