Unit 5 - Evaluation
As I enjoy using a range of materials in Textiles - stitch, I chose material innovation as my topic to discover different ways of using materials but learning about new materials that I could use in my own work. In Textiles- stitch, we are encouraged to use everything; everything and anything can be used as a material.
This expanded practices unit has been very informative. I have learned about and been inspired by a range of designers and artists and, by their methods of using materials. I have learned about how a common materials can be used different ways (like plastic), the history of some materials and how designers are constantly finding new purposes for the materials.
I was not aware that we are able to grow our own materials, prior to this unit. Learning about Biocellulose, Mycelium and guided growth gave me a different view on how we can design materials to grow a certain way and, create more natural and sustainable materials. I found the idea of 3D printing the most inspirational technique and I was really inspired by glass as a material. I enjoyed researching about 3D printing, as it is quite a new invention that has become popular in the past few years. I didn’t know that there were so many possible uses for 3D printing.
3D printing with glass by MIT researchers combined both, a technique that I am inspired by, and a material that I want to use. Neri Oxman and her team at the Mediated Matters and MIT have developed a technique that allows glass to be printed.

The glass pieces are amazing, the organic, curved structure of the pieces make it seem as though it has been created through coiling melted glass rods rather than from printing. I think the use of light enhances the aesthetic of the pieces making them seem very elegant. The glass artists and designers I have researched about, all experiment with light in their work. Chris Wood’s use of light and shadow with her dichroic glass pieces has made me think about how I could use light in my work.
Wood, C. (2015) Deflect II.
Her work has made me realise ways of pairing light with my samples and also how light can effect the presentation of my work. As I am currently looking at traditional sweets sold in glass jars, I can experiment with how light interacts with glass and the transparency of the sweets, which would be helpful to my studio research.
The blog tasks have further improved my analytical skills, I am able to look at a piece of work, criticise it and comment about designers’ work in terms of colour, form and material. I have also learned how to create and use mood boards effectively from the trend-forecasting lecture and have started using them more in my studio work. Some of the lectures have also helped me with presentation of the blog posts, such as using relevant images in the posts and how to layout the posts.
I feel that the main thing I could improve on, is, being more concise with what I post. I feel that the information that I post doesn’t deliver the main points of what I am trying to explain and tends to ramble. I also feel that I should improve my time management especially as I struggle with referencing, and find it quite time-consuming.
If this unit was longer and more practical, I would really like to try some of the techniques and experiment with materials that we have learned about in lectures and in our own research. It’d be amazing to try 3D printing and I’d also like to try to work with glass (I especially want to try glassblowing).
