The Chakra System and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
If you have ever wondered why you can meditate every day and still feel stuck, or why someone can know all the right things about healing and still not move forward, the answer is almost certainly somewhere in this framework.
The chakra system and ‘Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs’ describe the same human journey. One was developed in ancient India. The other was published by an American psychologist in 1943. They arrived from completely different directions and landed in exactly the same place.
Both say this. You cannot build on foundations that are not yet stable. And until the lower levels are addressed, the upper ones remain out of reach no matter how hard you try to access them.
What Maslow said
Abraham Maslow was a psychologist interested in what allows human beings to fully thrive. His hierarchy of needs, often shown as a pyramid, describes five levels of human need that must be met in order from the bottom up.
At the base sit physiological needs. Food, water, shelter, sleep, warmth. The bare essentials of physical survival. Above those sit safety needs. Security, stability, freedom from fear. Then love and belonging, the need for connection, intimacy and community. Above that, esteem needs, the need to feel capable, respected and valued. And at the top, self-actualisation, the realisation of your full potential.
Maslow later added a sixth level he called transcendence. The experience of connection to something greater than the individual self.
His central point was that each level depends on the one beneath it being reasonably stable. A person whose basic survival is under constant threat cannot meaningfully focus on self-esteem. A person who has never experienced genuine belonging will struggle to access self-actualisation. The pyramid is not just aspirational. It is sequential.
What the chakra system says
The chakra system maps the same journey through the body.
Seven main energy centres run from the base of the spine to the top of the head, each governing specific physical and emotional territory. Each one builds on the one beneath it. Blockages at the lower levels create symptoms, patterns and limitations that ripple up through the entire system.
The root chakra at the base governs survival, safety, physical security and the fundamental sense of having the right to exist. The sacral governs creativity, intimacy, pleasure and emotional connection. The solar plexus governs personal power, self-worth and the confidence to act in the world. The heart governs love, compassion, grief and the ability to give and receive in equal measure. The throat governs authentic expression and the ability to speak your truth. The third eye governs intuition, clarity and inner knowing. The crown governs connection to spirit, to higher purpose and to something beyond the individual self.
The language is different. The map is identical.
Where they meet
Root chakra and Maslow’s physiological and safety needs are the same conversation. When the root is unstable, whether through financial insecurity, a chronic sense of danger or a nervous system that never received the message that it was safe to relax, the body and the energy system both reflect it. Lower back pain, immune issues, persistent anxiety with no obvious cause, the inability to feel settled regardless of external circumstances. Maslow would say the same person cannot meaningfully pursue connection or self-actualisation while survival feels precarious. The chakra system would say exactly the same.
The sacral chakra and Maslow’s love and belonging speak to the same territory from different angles. The sacral holds the physical and creative dimensions of connection. The need for pleasure, for intimacy, for the expression of desire in its widest sense. Maslow’s love and belonging level holds the relational dimension. The need to feel part of something, to be truly known by at least one other person, to give and receive care. Both say that without this level being reasonably nourished, the levels above are compromised.
The solar plexus maps directly onto Maslow’s esteem needs. Self-worth, personal power, the confidence to take up space and act effectively in the world. This is where so many women get stuck. The root and sacral levels have enough to work with, but the solar plexus carries the damage of years of people pleasing, conditional love and environments that communicated, directly or indirectly, that being fully themselves was not safe or welcome. The esteem level sits blocked. And nothing above it flows cleanly.
The heart chakra bridges Maslow’s love and belonging with the levels above it. In the chakra system the heart is the meeting point between the three lower, more material chakras and the three upper, more spiritual ones. In Maslow’s framework, love and belonging sits in the middle of the pyramid for the same reason. Connection is the hinge. Without it, neither the survival needs below nor the self-actualisation above can be fully realised.
The throat chakra and the third eye both map onto Maslow’s self-actualisation. Authentic expression and inner knowing are both dimensions of becoming fully yourself. The ability to say what you mean, trust what you sense, and live in alignment with your own truth rather than the version of yourself that learned to be acceptable.
And the crown chakra maps onto Maslow’s transcendence, the level he added late in his life when he realised that self-actualisation was not the end of the journey. Beyond the full realisation of the individual self lies something else. Connection to a larger whole. The experience of meaning that goes beyond personal achievement or even personal healing.
What this means in practice
Understanding this framework changes how you look at both physical symptoms and spiritual blocks.
A woman who cannot seem to open her intuition despite years of development work may not need more practice. She may need to look at what is happening in the chakras beneath the third eye. The unaddressed solar plexus wound. The root that never fully settled. The throat that learned decades ago that speaking her truth had consequences.
A woman with chronic unexplained physical symptoms may find that the body is pointing directly at a level of the hierarchy that has never been properly nourished. The lower back that goes when financial pressure mounts. The gut that reflects years of overriding instinct. The chest that carries grief that was never given permission to move.
A woman who feels spiritually disconnected despite doing all the right things may find that the disconnect lives not in her spiritual practice but in the foundations beneath it. The nervous system that learned early on that the world was not safe enough to fully open in.
The body and the energy system are both trying to show you where the work lives. The symptoms are not random. The blocks are not mysterious. They are intelligent. They are specific. And they almost always point downward before they point upward.
Why this matters for healing
Most healing approaches work at a single level. Medicine addresses the physical. Therapy addresses the emotional and cognitive. Spiritual practice addresses the upper chakras and the transcendent.
Very few approaches work through the whole system in sequence. Starting at the root and building upward. Finding what is actually unstable and addressing it there rather than trying to bypass it by going directly to the level that appears to be the problem.
That is what the methodology I use is built around. Not symptom management. Not spiritual bypassing. The patient, specific work of finding what is actually blocked at what level and shifting it there, so that everything built above it can finally move.
The chakra system and Maslow were not describing different things. They were describing the same human being, at different points in time, in different languages. The journey is the same. The destination is the same.
The only question is where you are on the map right now. And what the level beneath your current sticking point might be trying to tell you.
