Pamban Bridge :
------------------------------
The Pamban Bridge is a cantilever railway bridge on the Palk Strait which connects the town of Rameswaram on Pamban Island to mainland India. The bridge refers to both the road bridge and the cantilever railway bridge, though primarily it means the latter.
Opened in 1914, it was India's first sea bridge, and was the longest sea bridge in India till 2010. The rail bridge is for the most part, a conventional bridge resting on concrete piers, but has a double leaf bascule section midway, which can be raised to let ships and barges pass through. On 24 February 2014, the Pamban Bridge marked its 100th anniversary.
The Rameswaram bridge aka Pamban bridge is 6,776 ft (2,365 m) long and was opened for traffic in 1914. The railroad bridge is a still-functioning double-leaf bascule bridge section that can be raised to let ships pass under the bridge. About 10 ships such as cargo carriers, coast guard ships, fishing vessels and oil tankers pass through the bridge every month.
After completion of Pamban bridge, metre gauge lines were laid from Mandapam up to Pamban Station, from here the railway lines bifurcated into two directions one towards Rameshwaram about 6.25 miles (10.06 km) up and another branch line of 15 miles (24 km) terminating at Dhanushkodi. The section was opened to traffic in 1914.
The bridge consist of 143 piers and the centre span is a Scherzer rolling type lift span. It's 220 ft (67 m) long and each of 100 tonnes.
The 1964 Rameshwaram cyclone (also known as the Dhanushkodi cyclone) was regarded as one of the most powerful storms to ever strike Sri Lanka (known then as Ceylon) on record. Early on December 23, the storm struck Ceylon near Pamban Island with winds estimated at 240 kmph (150 mph), ranking it as a modern-day super cyclonic storm.
At least 1,800 people lost their lives as a result of the cyclone.
On December 23, an estimated 7.6 m (25 ft) storm surge struck the town of Dhanuskodi on the south eastern edge of the island, submerging the town and overturning the Pamban - Dhanuskodi passenger train killing all 150 passengers on board. The town, an important transit point between India and Ceylon, was completely destroyed and has not been rebuilt since.

VAIGAI EXPRESS Speeds with MOST POWERFUL Locomotive : WAP-7 Engine - One of the most prestigious trains of the Southern Railway, the legendary Vaigai Express is currently being hauled by Indian Railways' most powerful passenger locomotive, WAP-7 locomotive on a permanent basis. The first service started from Madurai Junction on July 7, 2015.
WAP-7 Engine benefits loco pilots and the Railways in general. Not only does it enable smooth acceleration and deceleration, but is also equipped with more power and regeneration capacity, which can help the Indian railways operate more trains on the section without incurring additional cost on power. WAP-7 locomotive has several automation features that help the Loco pilots to operate trains without complexity.
A request has been placed to allot more such high-end train engines for Madurai division for seemless operation of trains. A total of 22 loco pilots are required to operate Superfast, Mail/Express trains in the division.
WAP-7 locomotive's goods variant, WAG-9 has been hauling freight trains in Madurai division since May. The steep gradient between Kalpattichathiram and Ayyampalayam for a stretch of 32 km has come as a boon for the division as these locomotives regenerate good amount of electricity.
Vaigai Express is a Superfast Intercity Express train running daily between Madurai and Chennai via Tiruchirappalli operated by Southern Railway zone of the Indian railways. The name 'Vaigai Express' has been always popular among not only the rail users but also among rail fans of two different generations as the train had won the hearts of lakhs of people who had known and experienced it right from the early days. Due to the demand for a day train between Madurai and Madras, which gradually began to increase from the 1970s, the southern railway decided to do its best for the rail travelers to introduce a super fast train for the first time on the MG in Southern railway. On August 15, 1977, a train woke up the people of Madurai early in the morning. It was on that day at 6 a.m. sharp that train no 135 down Vaigai Express began its inaugural journey from Madurai to Madras Egmore, with 16 yellow and green livery coaches and a matching YDM4 diesel loco. When it was introduced in 1977, this train had 16 coaches, hauled by twin-YDM4 diesel locos, and by 1984 it was bifurcated as Pallavan express, comprising eight coaches. With its never-before-achieved unique speed ever run on the SR MG, Vaigai express clocked the fastest run between Madurai and Madras Egmore, the distance of 495 kilometers on the very first day in 7 hours and 5 minutes when it entered Madras Egmore at 1.05 p.m. that afternoon, matching the speed of many Broad Gauge super fast trains on the SR. For safety purposes the train, was slowed down to a journey time of 7 hours and 30 minutes later on. It was the only train in SR which had completely tube lighted interiors and sun control sliding glass shutters installed for the first time ever in all its 8 second class coaches. The driver and the guard also had a corded telephone system to communicate between themselves. With the turntable facility available at Trichy, Chennai and Madurai, the operations staff always ensured that the YDM4 hauling Vaigai Express always had the short hood facing the front every time its started it journey.
This train also was one of its kind in SR which had its livery changed quite a few times from its original yellow-green combination to white-gray-red livery and then again to vermillon red - cream livery and again to cream-brown livery on the MG. The YDM4 for the Vaigai Express had been fitted with a double-tone horn which made it easy for rail users and railway staff alike to identify the loco as well as the train, which was never on use on the other YDM4s which operated on the same route for other trains. This the only MG train on the SR to be fitted with specially enhanced buffers and certified to run at 110 km/h. For the first time on the MG, the ICF manufactured two 40-seat AC chair car coaches exclusively for the Vaigai and Pallavan express. From 12 February 2014, Vaigai Express is being hauled by electric locomotive,End (MADURAI) to End (CHENNAI EGMORE).

The ten kilometre elevated stretch falls on the second corridor that runs for about 22km connecting Chennai Central with St Thomas Mount. In keeping with the spirit of Chennai, where a movie should be watched on the first day first show without fail, a large number of people gathered at the Alandur station by 11am on Monday to buy tickets for the first passenger train which left at 1.30pm. J Lakshminarayana, an engineering student who was in the queue to buy a ticket, said, "I will not be a regular commuter on the metro. But I wanted to experience it on the first day. In fact, I wanted to travel on the first train on the first day."
The Rs 14,600-crore project was approved by the previous Congress-led UPA regime in 2009 and the work began later that year. The Chennai Metro Rail is expected to cover 32 stations in the coming years. In a bid to provide a seamless travel, the metro rail has been designed to connect Chennai Airport, Chennai Central railway station, Egmore Station, CMBT bus depot and Mass-Rapid Transit System (MRTS). Work is gathering pace for both underground and elevated stretches on the Poonamallee High Road and Anna Salai.

Diesel locomotive is a type of railway locomotive in which the prime mover is a diesel engine. Several types of diesel locomotives have been developed, differing mainly in the means by which mechanical power is conveyed to the driving wheels. By the mid-1950s, with economic recovery from the Second World War, production of diesel locomotives had begun in many countries and the diesel locomotive was on its way to becoming the dominant type of locomotive. It offered greater flexibility and performance than the steam locomotive, as well as substantially lower operating and maintenance costs, other than where electric traction was in use due to policy decisions. Currently, almost all diesel locomotives are diesel-electric, although the diesel-hydraulic type was widely used between the 1950s and 1970s.
Diesel locomotives offer significant operating advantages over steam locomotives. They can safely be operated by one person, making them ideal for switching/shunting duties in yards (although for safety reasons many main-line diesel locomotives continue to have 2-man crews: an engineer and a conductor/switchman) and the operating environment is much more attractive, being much quieter, fully weatherproof and without the dirt and heat that is an inevitable part of operating a steam locomotive. Diesel locomotives can be worked in multiple with a single crew controlling multiple locomotives throughout a single train - something not practical with steam locomotives. This brought greater efficiencies to the operator, as individual locomotives could be relatively low-powered for use as a single unit on light duties but marshaled together to provide the power needed on a heavy train still under the control of a single crew. The locomotives of India presently consist of electric and diesel locomotives. Steam locomotives are no longer used in India, except in heritage trains. A locomotive is also called loco or engine. Diesel locomotives are built and maintained in India at the Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), Varanasi or at the Diesel-Loco Modernisation Works (DMW), Patiala. ALCOs are today a vanishing breed with new EMDs coming in and more lines being electrified. Only two among all ALCO models is in production today.
It took 42 years for the Indian Railways to come out with a new diesel locomotive after the WDM2! Even then, the WDM3A was just a reincarnation of the same old ALCO. The 12 cylinder ALCO engine was rebuilt with 16 cylinders to output 3100 hp. These were initially classified WDM2C but later changed to WDM3A (for 3100 hp) as per the new classification scheme. Though there are around 1200 WDM3As today, only some 150 odd were originally built as WDM3As. The rest are WDM2s with their engines rebuilt to output 3100 hp. Rebuilt WDM3As can be identified by a “R” at the end of their Road Number. Some of these have DBRs fitted on their short roof which makes it look like they have a “hoodie” covering their short hood top, a predominantly WDM3D feature. The WDM3A also laid the foundation for the remaining WDM3x series. Most of the “ALCOs” seen today are WDM3x series and not WDM2s. All dimensions of the WDM3A are identical to the WDM2, except for the baldies.

Indian Railways is an Indian state-owned enterprise, owned and operated by the Government of India through the Ministry of Railways. It is one of the world's largest railway networks comprising 115,000 km (71,000 mi) of track over a route of 65,436 km (40,660 mi) and 7,172 stations. In 2014-15, IR carried 8.397 billion passengers annually or more than 23 million passengers a day (roughly half of whom were suburban passengers) and 1050.18 million tons of freight in the year.
Railways were first introduced to India in the year 1853 from Mumbai to Thane. In 1951 the systems were nationalised as one unit, the Indian Railways, becoming one of the largest networks in the world. IR operates both long distance Indian trains and suburban rail systems on a multi-gauge network of broad, metre and narrow gauges. It also owns locomotive and coach production facilities at several places in India and are assigned codes identifying their gauge, kind of power and type of operation. Its operations cover twenty nine states and seven union territories and also provides limited international services to Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Indian Railways is the world's seventh largest commercial or utility employer, by number of employees, with over 1.307 million employees as of last published figures in 2013. Locomotives in India consist of electric and diesel locomotives. The world's first CNG locomotives are also being used.
Steam locomotives are no longer used, except in heritage trains. In India, locomotives are classified according to their track gauge, motive power, the work they are suited for and their power or model number. Indian Railways earns about 70% of its revenues from freight traffic. Most of its profits come from transporting freight, and this makes up for losses on passenger traffic. It deliberately keeps its passenger fares low and cross-subsidises the loss-making passenger traffic with the profit-making freight traffic.
