Mayilattam is known as peacock dance and is performed as a form of worship and respect to Subrahmanyam. It is a dance form in which a peacock is dressed up. The costume has a tep on the face, a crown and a beak. The dancer uses a kereedam made of rails. Dressed as a peacock, the vehicle of Subrahmanya, the dancers take steps on their feet to a specific rhythm. Performers dance on a tall piece of wood attached to the end of their leg. This art requires extensive effort and practice. In all Muruga  temples this dance is performed as a tradition during a festival. But due to difficulties in training and low wages for dancers, the number of Mailatam performers is decreasing. Mayilattam first originated in the Tamil Nadu region and is usually performed by village women in honor of Subramanian. This traditional South Indian dance is rigorous and requires extensive training and practice.
