Enemy: The World

World-destroying has been much discussed in SNK and it looks like Eren’s about to put his money where his mouth is. But why does Ymir Fritz agree with him? Why does the world suck so bad?

I discuss in this meta how the nature of freedom is individual - your own freedom necessarily contradicts with the freedom of everyone else. Thus for people like Eren and Ymir who long to be free, the world is an incorrigible enemy.

Ymir, who was clearly not guilty of releasing the pigs, was nonetheless condemned by a wave of faceless fingers: an abstract ‘World’ condemned her to die out of nothing more than self-interest and herd mentality. For the sake of preserving the freedom of the majority, they trampled upon the freedom of the minority.

Do you think Eren was being manipulative to Ymir?

Hi anon.

No I don’t think so. But it doesn’t surprise me at all some ppl do.

Let’s go back to chapter 120. Here you have Eren’s reaction to seeing Ymir for the first time:

He inmediatly felt emphaty for her situation and the horror her continued existence trapped into paths implicated.

Eren always hated those who took away the freedom from others and subjugated them. That’s true. But the problem comes when ppl take his words from 112 seriously. Eren doesn’t hate slaves, he despises those who enslave them. Looking at Ymir he sees her exactly for what she is: a simple girl who spent the last 2000 years all alone working non stop, unable to leave that place.

After witnessing her memories he tells her the same thing he told Historia: you are just a normal person. What happened to you is not ok.

Let’s face it: the only options Ymir had were the ones Eren said: stay where she was, thus ensuring the status quo and paths keep working, or leave. Going along with Zekes plan meant she and the hellish world the eldians of old created by abusing her powers remained exactly as we know them.

But by lending her strenght to Eren as he asked her to, is her way of putting an end to all that. Ymir is given a choice: remain stagnant, or fight. For the first time in two millenia, she has the opportunity to decide what it’s to become of her powers.

That Eren’s goal and Ymirs decision are linked doesn’t mean Eren decided to comfort Ymir just because of that. The panels showed us all we needed to know about his feelings regarding her situation and fate.

Those feelings seem 110% genuine to me. And they reach Ymir as well. You have Zeke, ordering her about like some animal, just bc he is a descendant of the royal family that enslaved her and used her powers for unspeakable acts. And you have Eren, listening to her unspoken turmoil and telling her everything is ok and she is the Master of her own fate. As I said Ymir had two alternatives: keep listening to her old masters, or choose.

But if some people prefer to see all this as some cantakerous ploy well that’s on them. I guess the idea of such an utter villian is appealing to them. For whatever reason. I guess they wanted Ymir to disregard Eren’s plea and… what? Listen to Zeke instead? Sure sounds wonderful. Let’s ruin the most tender moment in that girls whole existence just bc we can’t wrap our heads around the idea of Eren doing something nice every now and then. Just bc he wants to.

The first moment of bombardment was actually something straight out of a horror. I felt it and those screams almost gave me a nightmare. Brilliant execution from WIT Studio.

I cried at this Sunday episode and like many, i thought i was prepared, but even before the ending scenes started, i held my head with my both hands, telling myself no several times and not wanting to see the ending. Okay, i wanted to, because i had faith in WIT Studio and they delievered perfectly. I cried. And then i started translating the episode and when i was done, i watched it again. When Erwin fell, i broke down again, suddenly. Those moments leading to the end have my heart in pieces. And just now i realize that THERE WILL BE EVEN MORE TEARS! God! My tissues will not be enough.

This episode also cemented Levi as my ultimate husband, eventhough he’s a drawn character. M@therf@cking Levi snatched me and f@cked me. He was perfect. I felt his character yet again after some time. Everything about him in this eposode was so real and viseral, I love him and felt the cruelty of this world and the consiquences of one’s decisions. And the scene where he apologises to the soldiers is so powerful, i wanna take him home.
