former bookseller, trans man, and fellow fan of boyfriends (the webtoon) here! here are a few stories from off the top of my head that might fit the bill, in various mediums.

Webtoons:

LoveBot by Chase Keels and Miranda Mundt. A sci-fi comic following hacker Xada who accidentally modified a client’s “LoveBot” into a state of sentience. Lots of action and themes of identity, agency, and consumerism.

Shoot Around by suspu. A horror-comedy comic following an all-girl basketball team trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. Tao does take a while to be introduced, but I chose to include Shoot Around anyway because I love it. There’s also a trans girl amongst the protagonists.

Podcasts:

The Strange Case of Starship Iris (@iriscasefiles) Self-described as a sci-fi/mystery/comedy/thriller podcast set in the aftermath of strange explosion that destroyed the Starship Iris. Lots of found family vibes.

Novels:

Thirteen Storeys by Jonathan Sims. Horror novel masquerading as an anthology, with thirteen short intertwining stories set in the same building. Explores themes of capitalism, consumerism, and class. No horror stemming directly from violent or disturbing transphobia or homophobia.

I Was Born For This by Alice Oseman (you may know her as the creator of the webcomic Heartstopper!) A young adult novel following Jimmy, lead singer of a world famous indie band, and Angel, fan of said-band. Themes mainly revolve around fandom, obsession, and mental health, etc.

To Be Taught, If Fortunate by Becky Chambers. Sci-fi novella about a team of explorers visiting disparate planets between long periods of stasis, with life moving on earth without them. Themes of sacrifice, knowledge, and passion.
