The Throne of the Nations' Millennium General Assembly
James Hampton · 1950–1964
"FEAR NOT"
James Hampton built this massive, shimmering altar entirely from discarded materials salvaged from federal office buildings.
He called it The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations' Millennium General Assembly, a preparation for the second coming of Christ, born from religious visions.
The right side for the New Testament. The left for the Old. Writings in a script no one has ever decoded.
Many art historians and psychiatrists have speculated that Hampton may have had schizophrenia because of these decades of private devotion.
It now lives at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and is considered by many to be the greatest work of visionary art ever made in America. Made from junk. Made alone. Made entirely out of faith.
He never showed it to anyone.
He died in 1964.

gay and transgender life in provincetown, massachusetts, chris korda, 1991. (part 1).
I had just come out as a crossdresser, and had recently joined a Boston-area transgender support group called the Tiffany Club. My new friends invited me to join their annual trip to Provincetown, where my female side would be celebrated rather than judged, and I was so moved by that experience that I decided to stay for the summer. – chris korda

"It’s funny. We all sit around mindlessly slagging off that vile stink-hole of a city. But in some strange way, it takes care of us. I don’t know if that ugly wall of suburbia has been put there to stop them getting in or us getting out." - Bernadette Bassenger
