@transcendentcacophony
I am in India as a researcher. Americans have been ordered out of Pakistan (specifically Lahore) but we have not been ordered out of India (I am not the only American where I am currently). They have closed the local airport, so the only way out now is by bus to Delhi and then fly, but we have heard nothing from the embassy, STEP, or other traveler alerts. The current area is safe, but we don't know how long that will last. Depending on what happens tomorrow, I may leave early instead of staying until July.
Some of the media reports here are a bit wild ("Pakistan is bombing Jammu airport! India is firing missiles at Pakistan in retaliation! But no one has technically crossed the border so it isn't war!") Unclear how things will escalate from this point.
Yeah, that didn't last...they're just saying war now. India has retaliated by bombing Lahore, Islamabad, and Sialkot and it was just reported the navy is now attacking Karachi...
Yes @futuristicenemychaos. We are also now seeing reports of drone attacks in Amritsar in addition to Jammu.
Just now report also for Rajastan, Punjab, and Gujurat...
Supposedly Balochistan is now in rebellion against Pakistan? I'm not entirely sure what is going on there; I don't know how well Indian media outlets can be trusted when it comes to events in Pakistan right now, but that is the claim being circulated...
@nornities It's...interesting here? I had an Indian tell me today he thinks its all fake with AI images?
But I also look around the city, and this should be the height of our tourist season here going into monsoon and the streets are empty. Most of the international tourists have pulled out completely (the local airport shut down before Operation Sindoor started and the busses/taxis to Delhi have been full ever since). Even the intrastate tourists, most of whom come from the neighboring Indian states, are gone.
This area has no strategic value, so I really don't think we're in any direct danger, but I also understand the impulse to get out while the getting's good (to use an American euphemism). The general consensus among those I've talked to is just to hunker down and ride it out for now...there really isn't any transportation out right now, so best we could do is try to get a bus to Delhi or, worse-case scenario, hike up the Himalayas to Nepal as the closest friendly country. None of those are great options at the moment...
There was a ceasefire...it didn't even last 12 hours...

(For those less familiar with South Asian geography, these are all border states. I am not on the Pakistan border, but the state I'm in does share a border with two of those listed above).

i have been avoiding posting about this, mostly because if it could go wrong, it did go wrong, but i am leaving on sunday for a fulbright for dissertation research abroad. we're still ironing out the mess from the setbacks of the last few months, but in theory, i'll be in dehli next tuesday and off to my research site 2-4 weeks later.

I was explaining Tom Lehrer to friends a couple of nights ago. And now I've learned he has left his songs to us...
Lots of people worried that he's dead. No, he's still alive (hurrah!) -- I just meant the songs are in the public domain:
as he explains:
I, Tom Lehrer, and the Tom Lehrer Trust 2007, hereby grant the following permissions:
All copyrights to lyrics or music written or composed by me have been relinquished, and therefore such songs are now in the public domain. All of my songs that have never been copyrighted, having been available for free for so long, are now also in the public domain.
The latter includes all lyrics which I have written to music by others, although the music to such parodies, if copyrighted by their composers, are of course not included without permission of their copyright owners. The translated songs on this website may be found on YouTube in their original languages.
Performing and recording rights to all of my songs are included in this permission. Translation rights are also included.
In particular, permission is hereby granted to anyone to set any of these lyrics to their own music, or to set any of this music to their own lyrics, and to publish or perform their parodies or distortions of these songs without payment or fear of legal action.
Some recording, movie, and television rights to songs written by me are merely licensed non-exclusively by me to recording, movie, or TV companies. All such rights are now released herewith and therefore do not require any permission from me or from Maelstrom Music, which is merely me in another hat, nor from the recording, movie, or TV companies involved.
In short, I no longer retain any rights to any of my songs.
So help yourselves, and don’t send me any money.
NOTICE:
THIS WEBSITE WILL BE SHUT DOWN AT SOME DATE IN THE NOT TOO DISTANT FUTURE, SO IF YOU WANT TO DOWNLOAD ANYTHING, DON’T WAIT TOO LONG.

@piyotan
If you acquired every animal you have ever touched on purpose in your entire life, what would be the coolest thing you could morph into?
Mine would probably be a nurse shark or a boa constrictor. The snake was from when a reptile specialist brought it to my middle school and let us pet it. The shark would be from a Pet The Shark exhibit at an aquarium.
Not gonna lie though, my favorite one (not the coolest, but definitely the most sentimental value) would be the tiny stingray I was friends with when I was 6.
i once touched a monkey at a zoo because it held its hand out (not a smart idea but i was like, 11 lol), also a black bear, and an elephant. i’d just be rachel i guess
When I was a kid my mom took me to a Get-Your-Picture-With-A-Tiger thing at Sam’s Club, of all places, but it was a baby tiger, so I’d definitely morph that and be completely useless for 1 hour and 59 minutes.
i’ve touched a whitetail deer and i’ve gone on one of those sad camel rides (i was like five?) and i have also ridden a horse. so like. if im low on fluids in the desert i can use my weird blood cells to not die. i guess i could also be a really big harmless yellow burmese python. nothing very cool though.
When I was maybe 4 or 5 I got to ride on an Indian Elephant. That would be my strongest morph.
I got to pet a Camel a Dromedary I think when I went to a small circus. A “Zebra” but I’m sure it was a horse painted to look like a zebra. And a pony. There was also a goat with only one horn that they said it was a unicorn. I didn’t touch it though.
Got to pet a giraffe at a zoo. Well more like it was trying to eat my hair.
I go to the wool festival every year. So plenty of goats, sheep, llamas, and one alpaca.
My parents had an aviary So lovebirds, cockatiels, and parakeets. We also had chickens and a dog.
So mostly farm animals.
standard city critters: golden retriever, various doggies including pit bulls, assorted cats, beta fish
lived in a rather rural area growing up: horses, cows, chickens (assorted varieties), a turkey (he was a jerk), sheep (montadale and hampshire), pigs (American Yorkshire and hampshire; don't underestimate these guys, they get big and can be mean), rabbits (assorted varieties), goat, box turtles, various fishes
Neighbor was a Shriner so we went to the Shriner's circus with fancy passes one year: Indian elephant, camel, shetland pony
Nerdy enough to be in the biology club in high school, we did a volunteer stint at the local exotic animal rescue: emu, tiger, wolf, male lion, coydogs
Friend worked at the aquarium one summer: bull shark, lotsa freshwater fishes, sea turtle
Helped a friend with their thesis on animal geography in town and got to do some stuff with the local wildlife rescue and animal rehabilitation center as a result: opossum, scarlet macaw, assorted snakes (notably a cottonmouth, other various non-poisonous garden snakes), lots of spiders because I was the one without arachnophobia, bald eagle, crow, racoon
Related excursion to the zoo: manta ray (they let you touch these in their tank), standard petting zoo critters (alpaca, camel, horse, goat, etc.), red kangaroo, golden tamaran monkey (our zoo has several "open exhibits" where there are no barriers with the animals and sometimes they think you may have snacks...)
@piyotan what would yours be?
