Never have I ever built an automated sheep farm in Minecraft.

How do automated mob farms even work? Like how do you have an endless set of mobs? Does it involve a lot of RNG manipulation? I get that some hostile mobs have spawners, but what about passive mobs?
there are automated passive mob farms mainly based on keeping specific spawn conditions with the right biome and platforms made of grass etc, but i think a sheep farm specifically refers to something that will automatically shear them. usually it's an observer detecting the grass being eaten and shearing the sheep
