This wasn't me, but I'm glad to see other similarly minded folks are out there
Oppy, at his very core, is a character whose actions are purely driven by fear. As much as he pretends to be fearless, fear is the main driving force that pushes his actionsāfear of being hurt, fear of lacking power, fear of loneliness, fear of vulnerability, etc.
Itās really telling if you look at how you get him with your actions in Chapter 1.
Imagine with me
You are Oppy. You were just given the task of killing the Princess. You thought to yourself, āHey sheās just a princess she canāt be that dangerous right, maybe I could just talk things out with her first and figure out whatās going on. Maybe less stabbing work for me tooā, and so you proceed down the basement without the knife. After talking to her she seems harmless enough. Maybe she really doesnāt want to end the world and that the Narrator is just talking bullsh!t. So you agreed to free her.
But when you were about to free her, she tears through her fu@king arm like an animal.
What? What??? Why is she doing that??? A primal fear courses through you. You have nothing to defend yourself with regarding this unexpected incident. If she is able to tear through her arm just to get herself out of here, does that mean sheās been lying to me about being harmless?? What would she do to me after all this? You feel vulnerable and small.
And when the Narrator gives you the blade, you took the opportunity to stab her. You can either wait a little until sheās completely off guard with her back against you, or just stab her right here, right now. It doesnāt really matter. She is a threat to your safety. As long as sheās dead, youāll be safe again.
Iām a believer that the thought of stabbing the Princess in Thorn hadnāt occurred to him entirely until weāve got the blade (aka our power) back in our hands, since this feels like a repeat of what had happened in Chapter 1. He fears getting hurt again, and therefore he suggests stabbing the Princess.
In PaTD, I see Oppy being in an antagonistic role as him fearing you and seeing you stabbing yourself as a betrayal, and therefore a threat. From his perspective you literally stabbed yourself and got out of your dying body, leaving the voices behind for the Princess. It doesnāt matter what your intentions are, but here we are anyway.
Oppy actively doesn't want to slay the princess, however he fears the power the narrator has over him so does what he suggests because he thinks it'll be the easier way out. To get oppy from chapter 1 we have to decide not to take the blade, and then either get scared and stab her after she bites her own arm off like you said, but also after trying to free her getting your body taken over by the narrator and ultimately giving in and doing what he commands.
Oppy very specifically doesn't actually want to stab the princess, but feels you have to, for your own safety. As soon as we see a situation where the narrator loses the illusion of control, Oppy almost always takes the side of the princess. I think a lot of his routes are about learning to trust in his own inner authority over himself and deciding what he wants, not what's most convenient or safest
yes, we see this in tpatd actually. i've seen a few people express confusion about why the opportunist misses the princess's heart when he strikes at her with the blade, and even point fingers at some of the other voices. but my take on this is that the opportunist must have struck at her to give the illusion that he wanted to kill her, even if he did so badly -- all to make sure the narrator wouldn't force his hand. i mean, as transfemtlqtruthers mentioned above, you get him by first going to the basement without the blade, meaning you initially do not want to harm her. this must have some influence on how he views the situation -- kill her because it is necessary, because either she is dangerous, or he will force your hand.
and if there's one thing that all the voices have in common, it's some degree of distrust or wariness towards the narrator, and since opportunist would view the narrator as stronger than you (especially if you're not present in your body), he would want to make the narrator at least thinks that he's doing what he wants him to. sure, getting you back wouldn't have even been a thought in his mind bc no one could have guessed that it would be possible, but it's definitely what stabbing the princess and missing her heart resulted in. whether or not opportunist is truly happy about that, or is just sucking up to you bc you're definitely stronger than him is up for debate, especially given discussion of how you stabbing yourself to kill the princess and then consequently abandoning your body and all of your voices could be viewed as a betrayal to yourself.
THANK YOU!!!!!! I have been making the point about oppy missing deliberately for months and it's so good to see someone else get it
What is your favourite princess design? and what do you imagine the voices to look like?
For favourite princess design? probably Advy or HEA. As for the voices themselves, They're entirely non-physical to me. They don't look like anything or have any form or shape, they're just voices.
Do you have a least favourite voice?
Honestly, it's probably still Skeptic even after the HEA patch, I like the idea of him, but IDK, I still kinda wish he kept his moment in The Prisoner. I'm also not a big fan of Broken either.
What are your favourite chapters in stp? Like top three
Sorry to be boring, but HEA, PatD, and Thorn are my top 3. I'm not sure how I feel about the skeptic HEA update tho... Paranoid HEA was my first route in the game and meant a lot to me, and I'm not sure that I like Skeptic's delivery as much as I did for Paranoid. I guess that does open up my top 3 to all being oppy routes tho...
What's your favourite voice (other than opportunist)?
It kinda pings around a lot. I've grown to love oppy so much quite honestly by arguing about him online so much and kinda because he's very š³ in PatD tbh.... If I had to pick? My next choice would probably be Cold, Contrarian, Stubborn, Cheated or Hero (yeah I know that's like half the voices). Smitten is a lot of fun too.
You have the most objectively correct username on the planet btw
Thanks, she is so very gender.
i like to think that oppy has bad eyesight bc How on earth do you miss stabbing the princess in the heart when she has a huge X mark on it??? girl do you actually want her dead or not
Well oppy doesn't actually want to slay the princess. He talks a big game about slaying her but it's only because the narrator is there and oppy is terrified of going against his supposed authority and the consequences it'd bring. Slaying the princess is seen as the easy way out, even if it's something he really doesn't want to do. As soon as the narrator's illusion of power/control is broken oppy almost always takes the side of the princess rather enthusiastically.
