open-ended question, but what would you say to me if I say I'm trying to understand the aesthetics of sneakers re: the look of a whole outfit? perhaps I feel like they always feel disconnected from the rest of what someone's outfit looks like.
it's more a "it never looks right to my eye." but I'm trying to figure out how to explain the angle I'm coming at this from; many ostensibly fashionable things look incorrect to me too. I think I'm sort of viewing the person, including their outfit, as a whole object that could be designed—the "rhyming" point there you made hits the most.
yes, that tracks. like, spaghetti straps and sandals would make sense, say. from that lens, my actual question for myself: I tend to wear, I dunno, a henley and uniqlo pants? some collared stuff, zip hoodie, fleece. this is a bit of "finally I am trying to figure out what I would like to look like after a lifetime of not prioritizing it." certainly an unfinished product. so: any ideas on shoes?
on the right track, yeah. on color, I've always been curious about that: in computer/video games (where you get a ton of flexibility, and certainly where some of the "outfit as an entire aesthetic" mindset probably comes from), I often find myself basically trying to minimize the visual impact of the shoe. of course, that's not necessarily literal (though in ways it is; as you said, white stands out on almost any surface), but in the context of an outfit in a way it's a search for the unremarkable shoe, sort of the default. (not that I necessarily want to look entirely like a default person—acknowledging that certainly I mostly do, compared to substantially all outfits I see—but I think there's some sense of, "the divergences from that should appear intentional and be something that appeals to the wearer, standing out in a good way", which requires one to have a baseline to contrast with). but often, no available shoe color ingame seems to give that "this is the default" vibe, and that sort of translates to real life too.
