@transitivepopcorn
story time:Â presidential edition
so you know how everyone has a story
you know
like the story
like if youâre at a party and someone turns to you and says, tell the story
and you know exactly what they mean
the story
wellÂ
i have a story
and not unlike most good stories, it involves three key components:
barack obama
pre-2008 reebok sneakersÂ
and the absolute earth-shattering horror you can only feel after making the worst mistake of your lifeÂ
so here we go
it all began eight years ago
(i was a gangly child then)Â
and barack obama came to town
(when i was a young girl)
(my father took me out into the city)
(to see the president of the united states, obama)Â
(barack obama)
except it wasnât the city but where my parents workedÂ
and my mother was hired to take pictures of obama shaking the hands of others
(rich people)
(ceoâs)Â
(people who didnât wear reeboks to meet the president)
so i skipped school to see obama
(naturally)Â
(but my teacher was a republican so it still counted as an absence)Â
and the adventure begun
but as i soon learned
most of the adventure was waiting in a large room with my mother and some secret service men for roughly eight hoursÂ
because there is no timing with obama
(barack obama)
no one can know when obama is supposed to be there
(barack obama)
there is no, like, obama warning system
(barack)
itâs just that one second heâs not there
and the next second
heâs there
(barack obama)
so it was eight hours
and i remember nothing from those eight hours except for when one of the secret service men tried to talk to me
âhow are your studies,â he said
howâs school, he probably meant
but i didnât understand at the time
i was a gangly child
i was scared
he was tall
(i cried)
and then all of a sudden
(about eight hours into the eight hours)
he was there
(barack obama)
he was beautyÂ
he was grace
he was
(barack obama)
he walked into the room
he wasnât wearing reeboksÂ
(i noticed)
(i began to feel iâd made a mistake)
my mother took pictures of him shaking the hands of others
(rich people)
(ceoâs)
(none of whom were wearing reeboks)Â
and at the very end
obama began to leaveÂ
(barack obama)
i was happy enough to have graced his presence
but my parents
my parents were not happy
they needed more
âmr. obama,â they called
and they pointed to me
âof course,â obama said
(barack obama)
heâs so nice, i thought
and then it hit me
oh no, i thought
oh yes, my parents thought at some point, probably
iâm obama, obama thought, most likely
i was going to meet obama
up close and personal
obama
(barack obama)
the rest was a blur
and the next thing i knew i was there
with obama
(barack obama)
his hand was shaking my hand
his hand was on my hand
(nothing had ever felt so right)
âso whatâs youâre name,â he askedÂ
(with obamaâs voice)
(because he was obama)
(barack obama)
and i almost forgot but i told him
and he said it correctly even though itâs weirdÂ
(obama said my name)
and we were off to a good start
how was i to know
how was i to know the horrors to come
âso how old are you,â he asked then
and thatâs when this dream became a nightmare
âtwelve,â i said
a seemingly innocent answer
but hereâs the thing
i wasÂ
thirteen.Â
(thirteen)
(13)
(12+1)
(16-3)
(13.0)
(Thirteen.)Â
what have i done, i thought
(panic! at the election)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3LGopSVju4
i still donât know why i did it
did i really forget?Â
did i do it for the thrill of the chase?
to see if i could?
maybe
but obama didnât know
i did it, i thought, i lied
i lied to the president of the united states
i pulled it off
the greatest lie in history
the greatest heist
(i didnât know what a heist was)
(i was thirteen)
âoh so youâre in 6th grade then,â obama said
shit.
i was so close
shit what do i say, i thought
the journey is not over
the nightmare rages on
what do i say
i open my mouth to say, yes
âno,â i say
what the fuck, i thinkÂ
âno iâm in 7th gradeâÂ
(because i was)
maybe he wonât know, i thought
but he did.
(obamaâs been around the block)
(obama knows whatâs up)
âso youâre ahead of your class, thenâ he said
(i wasnât)
(i failed basic math at least twice by this time)
âyes,â i said, just wanting this nightmare to be over
just wanting the lie to end
for obama to call me out on my shit and arrest me
to spend the rest of my youth locked away in prison where i couldnât hurt anyone any more with my lies
i waited
i waited for arrest
but arrest didnât come
and that was even worse.
obama trusted me
obama thought i was a good kid
obama thought i was ahead of my classÂ
(ahead of my class)Â
i let him down
i let obama down
(barack obama)
i watched him leave
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYNH1baA_7k
obama, i mouthed out after him
obama iâm sorry
(he trusted me)
why did i do it, you ask
i donât know
after all these years
i still donât know
it still haunts me
i still wake up at night, shaking, and i think
i lied to the president of the united states
(twice)
the photographic evidence of my nightmare hangs in my fatherâs office
iâm smiling through my pain
iâm wearing reeboks
obama is not
(barack obama)
i hope that someday, after obamaâs retirementÂ
we can put this all behind us and start anewÂ
start fresh
(no more lies)
(no more deceit)
but iâm not naive
i know that we can never really go back
back to the way things were
five seconds after i met him but five seconds before i lied
but i can dream
i can hope
obama
obama iâm sorry
(barack obama)

Examples of Stockholm Syndrome in Disney
 Frollo and Quasimodo
Mother Gothel and Rapunzel
Frollo and Mother Gothel convince Quasimodo and Rapunzel that their lives are dependent on them. The two villains claim the outside world is a terrible place even though they know this is not true. They also constantly emotionally abuse their victims by implying their worthlessness and destroying their self-esteems. Quasimodo and Rapunzel sympathize with their captors and even believe their captors are protecting them and treating them with kindness. However, both captors are merely using and manipulating their victims for their own selfish purposes.
NOT:
The Beast and Belle
Belle does not sympathize with the Beast when she is treated poorly. She becomes angry and leaves the castle, only returning by her own wish so that the Beast (who saves her) does not freeze to death. She does not respond nicely towards the Beast until he treats her with respect. In this situation, Belle has control and is not manipulated into feeling for the Beast, nor does the Beast treat her disrespectfully after the first night. While the Beast does have an underlying motive as to keeping Belle in his castle, he abandons this idea and sets her free to make her happy. If anything, this story is a case of Lima Syndrome where the captor starts to sympathize with the victim.
Check out this post which refocuses the purpose of Beauty and the Beast from merely (and wrongly) being about Stockholm Syndrome to itâs original purpose.
FUCKING FINALLY
I donât usually reblog stuff like this, but Beauty and the Beast is my favorite movie and Iâd like to have this on my page!
this is actually a very good analysis. I take back all the times Iâve called Beauty and the Beast a âstockholm syndromeâ romance.Â
Before Osamu Tezuka. Before color. Before sound. Anime has a rich, artistic heritage.
Usually, when we in the West begin to learn about the history of anime, we begin with Osamu Tezuka. And to a certain extent, thatâs the perfect place to start. Anime, as we all know it now, began with Osamu Tezukaâs style and production methods and everyone in Japan following his lead. But prior to 1961, when Tezuka began making anime for TV, Japan had been creating animation for nearly a half-century.
The information available on Japanese animation before 1950, at least in English, is limited at best and conflicting at worst. The actual animated films themselves as well as records of who created what and when has mostly been destroyed. This is due to 1923âs Great Kanto Earthquake and later the American invasion of the islands. Aside from that, animation was treated as disposable entertainment, as was most animation in the rest of the world at that time. Thus, little has survived.
Thankfully, most of the animated work that remains has been preserved digitally and is available online! It should be mentioned that most of the silent animation presented in this article is âincompleteâ in that it lacks benshi narration. When film began to spread throughout Japan, rather than accepting it as an evolution of photography as the west did, it was viewed as an extension of theater. Since kabuki, noh, and bunraku theater traditions all had narrators, naturally film needed one as well. Enter the benshi, a narrator who not only read the aloud the onscreen intertitles, but also described the filmâs events in real time and gave voice to each and every character. Two of the films embedded in this article benefit from recorded benshi narration. The rest are âincompleteâ.
While I will be sprinkling bits of information Iâve uncovered regarding the roots of anime, make sure to give special attention to the cartoons themselves. What awaits you is a moving history of initially simplistic paper cut-outs giving way to experimental art, funny animal cartoons, sing along-songs, chalk animation, traditional folktales, and full-length feature films. And this is all before Tezuka. Welcome to an often overlooked world.Â
Enjoy yourself!
Spanish-Speaking Countries & the Origin of their Names
ArgentinaÂ
Argentina comes from the latin word for silver, argentum. The first use of the word appears around the time of when the Spanish conquistadors arrived at the RĂo de la Plata (River of Silver, Silver River) between Argentina and Uruguay.Â
BoliviaÂ
Bolivia comes from the name of a leader during the period of the Spanish American wars for independence, SimĂłn BolĂvar.Â
Chile
The valley of the Aconcagua was called âChiliâ by the Incas (according to Diego de Rosales) due to a corruption of the name Tili (a tribal chief).Â
Another theory is that there was a town or valley called Chili in the Casma Valley in Peru, which has a resemblance to the valley of Aconcagua.Â
Chile could come from an indigenous word meaning âends of the earthâ or âsea gulls.âÂ
From Mapuche, âchilliâ meaning âwhere the land ends.âÂ
From Quechua, âchiriâ meaning âcoldâ or âtchiliâ meaning âsnowâ or âthe deepest point of the Earth.âÂ
Colombia
Colombia is derived from the name Christopher Columbus.Â
Costa Rica
Costa Rica means ârich coastâ in Spanish. Christopher Columbus was given credit for discovering this country and called it Costa Rica because he believed there to be precious metals.Â
Cuba
Cuba is TaĂno for âwhere fertile land is abundantâ (cubao) or âgreat placeâ (coabana).Â
Dominican RepublicÂ
The Dominican Republic shares an island with Haiti.Â
Before the whole island was called Haiti, the TaĂno word for mountainous land. Christopher Columbus comes to the island and renames it Hispaniola, meaning âlittle Spainâ because its beauty was comparable to that of Spainâs.Â
The French arrive on the island, naming the current-day Haiti St. Domingue and the Spanish refered to the Dominican Republic and Santo Domingo.Â
After its independence, they renamed it to the Dominican RepublicÂ
EcuadorÂ
Ecuador means âequatorâ in Spanish, and Ecuador lies on the equator.Â
El SalvadorÂ
El Salvador means âThe Saviorâ in Spanish.Â
GuatemalaÂ
Guatemala comes from the Nahuatl word CuauhtÄmallÄn, which means âplace of many trees.âÂ
Another theory is that the countryâs name is a alteration of the Nahoa word which means âland of the snake-eating bird.â
Honduras
Honduras means âdepthsâ in Spanish. It is said that Columbus said, âGracias a Dios que hemos salido de estas Hondurasâ(Thank God we have left these depths).Â
Mexico
The Nahuatl word Mexica means âplace of the Mexicaâ (the Aztecs).Â
In Nahuatl, a combination of three words creates the meaning similar to âin the navel of the moonâ because the position of lakes resembles a rabbit; therefore alluding to the navel of a rabbit.Â
Nicaragua
At the time of the Spanish arrival in Nicaragua, Nicarao was the current chief of the indigenous tribe. Nicarao, combined with the Spanish word for water (agua) due to itâs geography, makes Nicaragua.
Another theory is that it means âsurrounded by waterâ in an indigenous language.Â
PanamaÂ
Panama comes from a word of the indigenous language meaning something similar to an âabundance of fishâ (due to the countryâs geography).Â
Paraguay
Coming from GuaranĂ, Paraguay is believed to refer to a river despite many versions of its origin. It means something similar to âriver that flows through the seaâ (French-Argentine historian Paul Groussac), âriver crownedâ (Antonio Ruiz de Montoya), or refers either to an indigenous tribe that lived along the river or a chief named Paraguaio (FĂ©lix de Azara).Â
Peru
The original name of Peru was BirĂș, BirĂș being the name of a ruler who lived close to the Bay of San Miguel, Panama. He was visited by Spanish explores where, at the time, was the southernmost region of the New World.Â
Puerto RicoÂ
Puerto Rico was originally called San Juan Bautista by Christopher Columbus, after the Catholic saint, Saint John the Baptist, while the capital was called the Ciudad de Puerto Rico. As time went on, gold was found in the river and the country began to be referred to as Puerto Rico.Â
Spain
España (Spain) comes from the Roman name Hispania, though the origins of this word are unknown.Â
Hispania could have stemmed from the Greek word Hesperia, which poetically means âwestern landâ or âland of the setting sunâ (in reference to Italy), which would then make Spain (further west) Hesperia ultima.Â
Antonio de Nebrija (Renaissance) thought that Hispania is derived from the word Hispalis, which means âcity of the western world.â
Another theory is that it comes from I-Shpania (Punic), meaning something similar to âland of rabbitsâ because the Roman coins were adorned with a female figure with a rabbit.Â
UruguayÂ
Uruguay is a GuaranĂ word, which means âriver of shellfishâ or âriver the uru birds come from.âÂ
VenezuelaÂ
The indigenous people living in Venezuela during the 1500s built their living quarters on stilts over places like Lake Maracaibo; this reminded a Spanish explorer of Venice (Italy), in which the name Venezuela means âlittle Venice.â Â
Please correct me if any of these are incorrect! Some of these have multiple histories and I have no way of knowing which one is correct.Â
The origins for some of the countries are difficult to find or too fuzzy in my opinion to write it down, but I tried to provide an explanation for the meaning (e.g. El Salvador, Honduras, etc.)

No bullshit, I sing the song all the time
trying to sound like a normal interested person in public
protect children at all costsÂ
To add some nuance: it requires child welfare workers to consider gender identity when evaluating a childâs safety in a home. So if refusing to accept gender identity crosses the line into abuse, then yes the government will remove the children from the home.
There is actually very little reporting of this law in the main stream media. Itâs mostly right-wing ânewsâ sites such as Infowars (Canadaâs Breitbart equivalent) who are jumping on this as an overreach of government power.
