honestly think that showing us mark read in the ending is just. the stroke of pure genius. they're there to pull us back into reality. they're a memento mori. they show us that for all the fantasies jack's spinning, he will hang so very soon. and then at the ship jack and anne talk about flint's treasure and so silver's fantasy is broken open as well. we spend the last scenes of the show being spoonfed that hope, that "happy" ending that they got by bargaining with the empire and stopping the revolution, and then mark read tears through it with a solemn certainty of a greek tragedy. we are reminded that the only hope they had was given away. in that moment. on that island. along with that chest.
