((A rather unhappy 10-y-o has gotten her hands on a security pass she lifted off a sleep deprived Tim Drake-Wayne. She has a plastic T-rex with a heavily chewed tail making it a satisfactory shiv in one hand and is being followed by her brother. They escaped the daycare while a shortstaffed employee quelled an insurrection.))

"Annie, we're gonna get in trouble an' get grounded! I cain't get grounded becuz then I cain't help walk Goombah an' you know he's a menace without extra walks!" Izz, the brother argued as he jumped in front of the keypass reader at Wayne's office.

"I'm gonna make sure he sees the doctor! He's gotta be at work! Mizz Alo said somethin' about a liberry window an' I didn't know we had a liberry here but he's always workin' so he's gotta be here!" the sister, Annie, argued worriedly.

It could be argued that security should have stopped two random redheaded children from accessing this level, but... they DID have a Wayne passkey. ((from @transplanted-gothamite-oc-rps since I can't send from a secondary. lol. Ready to interact with a potential adoptee? She's going to have to reclaim her neighbor's kids! ))

[Bruce was currently sat down at his desk, pausing his work only occasionally to hit his ears to stop the ringing.

He kept turning every so often, swearing he heard a sound. But, being Bruce, he just convinced himself it was his ears messing around.]

Annie eased the door open after shoving her brother out of the way.

"We're gonna get in so much trouble," Izz whispered, green eyes full of worry in his freckled face. He had his baseball hat on backwards and his sister had drawn a sunflower on his shoulder so he could look like Arsenal, his favorite hero.

He'd wanted a scorpion, but his sister had quite reasonably pointed out that his mom would be upset about the bug. And since it had been done in permanent marker, they couldn't wash it off, right? So it had to be something she wouldn't mind. ((Yes, the boy is gullible. He has a good heart though.))

Annie peeked through the door after making a shushing noise. "We're only in trouble if we get caught," she whispered noisily back. "So shut up already! We ain't s'posed to be here, but we gotta protec' Mr. Wayne!"

((In other words, it is a pretty much normal volume convo, but she is CONVINCED she is whispering and they won't get caught. Ahh, to be young again. lol))

When she saw the man who'd snuck down to the nursery a couple times to help hold babies, she'd seen him batting ((no pun intended)) at his ear.

"We gotta protect 'im!" she sternly announced, hand slipping on the door. It closed slightly harder than intended as she proceeded to hide near the door, toy held menacingly at the ready to attack anybody who came in after them.

She immediately dropped to the floor at the thunk like a toy in the "Toy Story" movies they watched at home. Everyone knew Mr. Wayne always liked having kids around, so surely they wouldn't be in too much trouble... right?

((So picture a pair of redheaded 10-y-o twins flopped like toys, one behind an office potted palm and one near the nearest couch and trying to be sure nobody has noticed them. The girl has what looks like a Rex but has the tail chewed to a point like a makeshift shiv. She thinks she is terrifying. She is, but not physically. In spite of her naïveté she also is quick on her feet and very much bosses her brother around.

[Bruce heard the thud. Anyone could, even with damaged ears. He quickly turned, trying to see what made the sound.]

“Hello? Who’s there?” [He called out, standing up from his office chair.]

[He could obviously see the little figure hiding behind the plant, but he indulged them by pretending he couldn’t see them.]

Annie pouted for a second, but she'd learned early on... if you rat yourself out, you end up in far less trouble.

"I'm here. Well, me an' my brother. We heard you got hurt, so we decided to protec' you. We're good at protectin' an' even have the best guard dog ever!" She announced proudly.

Izz rolled his eyes before popping up from behind the plant. He was proudly wearing a pink ball cap backwards, his shirt sleeve rolled up to show off his "tattoo". "We don' have 'im here, of course. Mr. Hood says Goombah's not ready to be unleashed on the world. I tol' him we couldn' let 'im do that anyways because o' leash laws." The boy's voice showed an overall agreeable nature, but then he turned to crinkle his nose at his sister.

"But Annie brought a weapon. That dino butt is dangerous!"

"Yeah, well so's the Lego bricks you brought. Mizz Alo says so, an' she wouldn' fib about that!"

As she quarreled amicably back, she stuck her tongue out at Izz before turning back to the injured man.

"Is your ear hurting? My ear started hurting an' bleeding after we got too near a loud noise once. Doctor said I'd hurt my hearing drum. I told him that was a silly place to keep a drum, but he jus' laughed. Is your hearing drum hurted too? Cuz he always has the good lollipops! The ones with the name I'm not s'posed to call my brother."

((hope you don't mind the silliness @brucetwayne-official . I figure levity is my favorite thing to write. lol))

[He chuckles at her, looking down at her.]

''Don't worry. I'm not hurt too bad, the ringing is going away by now...I'll be a-okay.''

[He crouched down to their level, ruffling their hair in his hands.]

''Anyways..thank you two so much for wanting to protect me. I'm honored.''

Annie nodded, looking quite seriously at him and then marching back to the office door and peeking under the door for feet. Seeing none, she quickly popped the door open, reached behind the potted plant by it to snag the neon green plushie made to resemble a balloon dog, and came back over to Bruce after softly shutting the door again.

"You guard. I gotta see if he needs bandaids," she bossed at Izz, not seeing him shoot a look of resigned annoyance before grabbing the dino and holding it, only succeeding in looking as menacing as a cocker spaniel.

She reached over for Bruce's hand, pulling him to sit by a lamp for light. "Sun light's better, but I heard you were allergic to sunlight and that's why you live somewhere that rains and haz dirty air," she explained, trying to reassure him. "So I won' make you sit by the window becuz a good nurse shouldn' burn their patients. So this lamp cain't hurt you, right?" she looked worried for a second before shaking her head.

"Nah, else you'd keep a burnded out bulb in it so folks couldn' use it. Okey, letsee here..." she reached into an opening in the back of the dog toy. "Nobody questions a girl with a toy dog, they jes' think she's a silly kid."

With those words, she reached in and pulled out three rolled ace wraps, a freezer bag with gauze pads and bandages, and a smaller sandwich bag with a tube of antiseptic ointment.

"Ya better hurry up," Izz hissed. "Alo's gonna find us any minute now an' we don' wanna get into trouble. Alo will never help us get 'im to a docter an' then he'll die like Leo's dad did an'--"

"Zip it. Silent guards ain' s'posed to be worry babies out loud." Annie huffed, but it was clear it was more to stop a worry spiral than any agitation.

Then she turned and held up two sticker options. "Pretty Princess band aid or Dino? I think you're cool enough for the princess, but for some reason guys like the stinky ol' reptiles."

"Uhh yeah-- that's because they're cool!" Izz argued in a stage whisper.

"Princesses are cooler cuz they get to grow up and boss everbody round!" then she held up a band aid in each hand. "Princess or dino?" she asked, completely serious.

((ah... for the days when this was an important argument. lol. Wayne bait approach imminent, @brucetwayne-official ))

[He chuckled, lifting her up and onto his knee.]

“Hmmm.. let me think. I think, you know what? I’ll take the princess ones.”

[He looked at her very serious face, or as serious as someone her age could be, and held in a snicker.]

Her eyes narrowed and she squirmed on autopilot, kicking in surprise and (fortunately) only grazing his shin.

"I appre-she-ate the help sir, but it's not good to manhandle a nurse or firs' responders. Mama tol' Dad that, an' Mama wouldn' lie about that." Her voice was chiding before she let out a nose wrinkle. "This might be a two bandaid job, it looks like," she announced, and proceeded to look contemplative. "Dinosaur and Princess, I don' call the ambulance. I heard they cost lotsa money. Last time our neighbor had a bad fall after her workout, she complained an ambilance costs over a thousand bucks. That's like..." she paused and twiddled her fingers in a quick gesture while she did mental math "... like a HUNDRED bat burger meals with jokerized fries!" Her eyes grew wide at the realization. "Nope. We're gettin' ya patched up."

"Hey motor mouth, less talkin' and more workin'. Mama always says she got at least 7 gray hairs jus' from all yer talkin'. He's gotta be old... I'd say at least 33! He's gonna get retidered ((retired)) before you docter 'im. Although, if'n he quits bleedin', he won't have to pretend the Princess is cooler than a velocirapt'r."

"Princesses are cooler," came the measured annoyance, "because they can become queens an' order someone to lose their heads. Velocirapt'rs can't even hunt alone, let alone take someone's head off!" Clearly, she was warming up to the subject before looking at the spot and neatly dabbing some ointment on it and following it with neatly placing the two bandaids side by side. He now had a Disney Princess holding a book in one hand and a rose in the other ((Belle, specifically. For our awkward genius and her beastly friend)) on a bandaid next to a velociraptor with cartoon forearms stretched out like it was giving a hug.

"Any other spots that hurt? I'm not Mama, so I'm not kissin' it better. I can, however, offer a medicinal lollipop." She held out a bag labeled "DumDums".

"Iss ok that they got Izz's name on 'em. That don' make 'em his," she said, snickering at her brother.

In all the hullaballoo, he'd forgotten he was on guard duty. He was reminded, however, when the elevator door sounded, and Alo stepped out, dwarfed by the security guard escorting her.

"Look, I promise I will give Mr. Drake-Wayne's basge back immediately and can tell my neighbors the terror twins are banned. For a month. Two months? Just please don't press charges; I swear they were just worried about Mr. Wayne." Her voice was more than a little panicked, and when she saw the kids, she facepalmed.

"They are darlings, but it's never wise to pick up feral kids. These two may talk younger, but they are crafty as all get out. I am so sorry pleasedon'tfiremeortakethekidsaway!" she blurted out.

The redhead bossy boots shook her head. "He let me talk his hurt ear off an' 'greed to the coolness of a princess bandaid. He doesn' seem like the kind of meanie who'd fire ya for us sneakin out after startin' a little ruckus. I mean, nobody even set off a fire alarm this time!"

"Thank goodness for small blessings. Your dad about had a heart attack when he couldn't find the source of the fire in the apartment, and Ma had to intercede with the owner! " Alo shook her finger in the universal gesture of reprimand before grinning awkwardly at Bruce.

"Sorry about the intrusion sir. And Annie? Give it back. He hasn't agreed to a magic trick."

Annie's expression dropped firmly into a pout.

((Better check that wallet @brucetwayne-official . When he gets it back, it'll have a spare princess bandaid tucked next to his credit cards. My kid STILL does this to me, so I just look at it as a love language. lol))

[Bruce chuckled under his breath. He reached his hand out to ruffle Annie’s hair, setting her down.]

“It’s fine. I’m glad these two wanted to help me. You know, I feel quite honoured.”

“And hey, I know how sneaky kids can be. I’ve raised multiple.”

[He sat back down in his chair, trying his hardest not to burst into laughter at the two children.]

With a sigh of relief that her job wasn't in jeopardy, Alo smiled her brightest smile at him. "Yeah... one of my neighbors is friends with Dick and Jason spends a fair amount of time at our building- I heard some biddies speculate that he's courting Hood.

"Damian helped Izz here and his bff Leo look for another neighbor's service dog when she went missing. And uh..." she paused and snagged the badge tucked in Annie's back pocket, returning Tim's badge to his dad. "I might not be eager to make Tim's acquaintance until I figure out how mad he is about these teo stealing his badge. Apparently, he was asleep and sprawled across his desk. Cheet-o fingerprints suggest they checked for a pulse before taking the keycard. And they left a note too. Off to save your dad. Bad guys gave him a head injury an' hees not alowed to die" was written in crayon on an expense report in the picture she showed him.

"But Mr. Bossman got his head hitted! An' Leo's dad got his head hurted in a robbery an' he died! An' if Mr. Bossman dies, the babies cain't get extra snuggles from 'im an' they'll be sad an' they already cry too much jes' cuz they're babies--"

her diatribe was interrupted by a frowning Izz. "You ain't s'posed to rat 'im out. He knows he goes sometimes, we know an' Miss Alo knows. You never know who might have his office bugged! It could be Mr. Two-Faced or Mister Waddles or even that creepy clown that scares ev'rybody as bad as Sacarescrow!"

"It's not ratting him out if ev'ryone here knows. You're just bummed becuz he never plays with the big kids. But he's old, an' asides, he might not even fit in the ball pit!"

"I would like to clearly state that it's not a ball pit if it's not filled with balls. What you have is a plushy pit. Yes, it is fun diving into the soft toys, but that's still technically not a ball pit." Alo tried to point out, but both kids rolled their eyes.

"So iss a ballpit in our imaginations! We're s'posed to use those. Don' you ever imagine fun things?" Annie asked, and Alo's smile turned mournful.

"Yes, believe it or not I imagine things too. Right now I'm imagining you two giving poor Mr. B-- Mr. Wayne a hug and then quietly returning to the classroom. Maybe in exchange I could ask Ma if you could play on the Atari later?"

"Totally boring to imagine." She was dismissed by the kids.

"We could imagine we're defective bodyguards--"

"You mean detective bodyguards," she interjected, but she received a quick wave off.

"Like that Sherlock guy! You know, the one in the cool book with the hidden thingy in it?" Then Annie paused.

"I brung the magnifyin' glass that Ma uses to read the mail sometimes! Maybe we could check what hitted you for fingerprints or stuff like that?" Clearly, Annie had determined that only they could figure out whodunnit.

Alo, meanwhile, had already decided to help Leah scan any footage they could access. Nobody got to hurt her boss... he was one of the few nice people she'd met. And if he seemed slightly dad shaped then at least she wasn't admitting it; she'd already escaped one parent and wasn't eager to become attached- even vicariously- to another parent-type person in her life.

Blue eyes blinked and she tucked her dyed purple bangs back from her face, the deep brown of the rest of her hair close enough to "Wayne Bait" standards to mean she'd heard a few jokes while she was getting emancipated and employed.
