then lets pick a date. November is Trans awareness month lets make this a twice a year thing. November 1st and six months before May 1st
before we do this, let’s ask ourselves why we are so motivated to have a trans selfie day all of the sudden… is it because we want more trans self-love and acceptance within our community? or is it because we want to duplicate #blackout movement and divert the spotlight?
please really think about this before you decide to go any further
It is nice how one would take a step back and think about the reasons for why they wanted to do something like this.
BUT Should we limit social media and it’s effectiveness just to ONE of many groups of people that are oppressed and discriminated against?
No one is “limiting social media” and its effectiveness. #Blackout was created using social media to showcase the beauty of black people. Social media itself wasn’t limited to anyone. The hashtag, however, was limited.
Social media is open to EVERYONE. But taking a concept created by black people, for black people, and placing another name on it, isn’t doing anything positive. With the many resources social media provides, finding another, more original, way to promote the beauty in the trans community, should be fairly easy.
Being trans and being black are not mutually exclusive things, first of all. Please stop asking people to compartmentalize their identities.
Second, by using a day that was already established as International Trans Day of Visibility (Mar. 31) - this isn’t bogarting the #Blackout movement at all. This is just implementing the use of selfies as a sense of pride in our journeys, experiences and struggles. In ideology, the #Blackout movement would behoove itself to support the progress and elevation of other minority/marginalized groups as well. Being against other groups in similar situations is far different than being in compliance with the #Whiteout movement.
Honestly, I can’t help but sense some lowkey transphobia/transmisogyny behind the argument against this. Like, let’s be real, the black community at large is highly against the trans community (not saying more so than any other race) but we must acknowledge that.
To me this is very different than #Whiteout because trans people are a marginalized group whether people want to recognize that or not. The stats, the testimonies, the history all shows that to be true.
You should be in support of an effort to educate the world, bring awareness about and stop the discrimination and destruction of trans lives. Full stop.
