Battle Royale is a Japanese novel that got a movie and a manga series. All of it translated into English at some point. My favorite is the novel and defintely recommend. It was intense, but good. It was super hyped back in the day long before Hunger Games.
The story revolves around high school kids being forced to participate in a game to the death. Anyone that refused would get their head blown up by the collar around their necks.
Liar Game is a Japanese manga that later got a live action series. The series revolves around a girl that was easily influenced, and manipulated to the point of ending up in a tremendous amound of debt. Things happen, and she ends up stuck in this game called the Liar Game. A game where only the best of liars can win. Our MC is a TERRIBLE liar.
Everyone in that room has a bunch of debt like her. In her panic, she seeks the help of a conman.
Later on, it's revealed that he has his reasons for helping her. Together, they navigate through several games where they outsmart their opponents. As the series continues, our girl gets really damn good at playing the game. It's one of my favs, and it defintely deserves a 2020 glow up.
Both of these have social commentary as well.
Squid Game is a South Korean show on Netflix that combines these concepts, and makes it its own thing. It is brutal, and it has social commentary. The ending is left open for another season, but as of now its a standalone.
But I wouldn't be surprised if they jumped back, because you're left wanting justice for the people that die in the series. You're also left with a ton of questions by the end. Just like the main protagonist, you want to jump back to destroy those fucks in charge.
