delete the border
idea taken from borderhack festival created by fran ilich
this is the border between tijuana and san diego que según fran ilich “son una sola ciudad que, como berlin, se dividió por accidentes y designios del destino. tijuana y san digo es la misma ciudad, la ciudad i, el punto que une al primer y tercer mundos. la frontera que se impone como un vórtex dimensional tragándose a los viajeros sin papeles ...” (metro pop)

border crossing beta 2.0 game created by alfredo salazar-caro, lee más aquí
while this article attempts to make some interesting points about this game (how it reflects the fatality of border crossing, the ethnographic approach to its design, the idea of creating consciousness) i worry about virtual realities like these whitewashing the unimaginably difficult experiences of immigrants and border crossings, and of turning those experiences into a “game.” i have not played it, but i can assume that the experience of sitting in a (probably air conditioned) room, moving a character through the experience using an apple keyboard, is quite different from reality. yes, all gamers die in the end, and that can produce a sense of frustration, fear, sadness that could have political implications, but isn’t it just a vicarious experience of trauma without any real risk? i find it interesting that the creator interviewed immigrants who had crossed the u.s.-mexico border previously to design it, i wonder what they would think about playing this.

“true democracy can only exist in the imagination of art and literature”
"i say (snap) in my world, there is food, clothing, housing, medical attention and education for everyone. (snap) in my world, there is no difference between sameness and difference, and borders are easy to cross especially those from south to north. (snap) in my world there are no illegal aliens, no others, no good or bad guys. no terrorists or crime cartels. (snap) in my world there are no guns because there is no fear. (snap) in my world, there is a place for everyone even if only for the duration of a performance. i say (snap) in my world people solve their disagreements through performance rituals an psychomagic actions. (snaps) in my world, the laws of poetry and quantum physics rule everyday life, and all TV stations are run by artists and poets. beautiful statements, que no? but are they true? in our world, they are.”
trasfrontera
“trasfrontera,” implies both the futuristic “post border” and also “beyond border,” which is what the web as a “global village”—to borrow marshall mcluhan’s term—utopically represents. however, it is not meant as a site of forgetfulness or erasure of the political reality of the u.s.-mexico border, but as a place of reflecting, rethinking and challenging this reality. it relies heavily on the work of chican@ cyberpunk artists, writers, and thinkers. contributions & pirating are strongly encouraged.
